State of the art

The term "state of the art" (sometimes "cutting edge") refers to the highest level of general development, as of a device, technique, or scientific field achieved at a particular time. It also refers to the level of development (as of a device, procedure, process, technique, or science) reached at any particular time as a result of the common methodologies employed. The term has been used since 1910, and has become both a common term in advertising and marketing, and a legally significant phrase with respect to both patent law and tort liability. In advertising, the phrase is often used to convey that a product is made with the best possible technology, but it has been noted that "the term 'state of the art' requires little proof on the part of advertisers", as it is considered mere puffery. The use of the term in patent law, by contrast, "does not connote even superiority, let alone the superlative quality the ad writers would have us ascribe to the term".

Origin and history

The Art

The Art (sometimes stylised as THEART) are an Australian Alternative Rock band based in Sydney. They began performing under the name The Follow in 2004. Tasmanian band leader Azaria Byrne was known as an unsuccessful contestant on the reality television series Popstars.

Early highlights for the band's career have been supporting successful bands such as the Pixies, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Sonic Youth and Thirty Seconds to Mars as late as 2010, however this was marred by the crowd booing and calls to "get off the stage".

As band leader Azaria Byrne enters middle age success has so far eluded him despite media attention resulting from his being cuckolded by the even older fading celebrity Bill Corgan.

The other band members have all been described as "dull" but this could also be a result of the attention seeking behavior of their singer.

Windows Holographic is a "mixed reality" computing platform, enabling applications in which the live presentation of physical real-world elements is incorporated with that of virtual elements (referred to as "holograms" by Microsoft) such that they are perceived to exist together in a shared environment. A variant of Windows for augmented reality computers (which augment a real-world physical environment with virtual elements) Windows Holographic features an augmented-reality operating environment in which any Universal Windows App can run. In addition, with Holographic APIs, which are part of the Universal Windows Platform, and supported as standard in Windows 10 (including versions for mobile devices and Xbox One), mixed reality features can be readily implemented in any Universal Windows App, for a wide range of Windows 10-based devices.

Microsoft announced Windows Holographic at its "Windows 10: The Next Chapter" press event on January 21, 2015. It is set to be introduced through the smart glasses headset Microsoft HoloLens, as part of the general rollout of Windows 10. The Windows 10 launch began July 29, 2015 with release of the PC version, with the Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition to be released in the first quarter of 2016.

After years of planning, a new, centralized training facility for Durham Regional Police Officers officially opened its doors June 27th in Whitby. The Operations Training Centre (OTC) at 4060 Anderson Street in Whitby contains a new, state-of-the-art Communications and 911 Call Centre, a new 25-metre, 12-lane indoor firing range, and a secure and central home for police IT backup systems. The 47,092 sq. ft. OTC addresses three key operational issues championed by Mike Ewles when he was sworn in as Chief Constable in June of 2007. First, the Communications and 911 Call Centre currently in Central East Division (downtown Oshawa) needed more space and had to prepare for the launch of a new, common-platform radio system for emergency services in 2014. Secondly, the DRPS has been operating without its own firing range since 1988 and has been leasing space from a private club in Ajax, making improvements in that facility to meet workplace and air quality standards. Police officers must re-qualify to use their firearms every year. Thirdly, the new facility will serve as a much-needed secure storage area for police computer hardware and software backup systems. Currently, these backup systems are in very tight quarters at 77 Centre Street, which is the home of DRPS' busiest operational division. The 12-lane gun range uses a modern bullet catching system and the latest air-handling technology to keep the air clean of contaminants. It also features a moving target option, which will expand training options for officers. After a few months of operation, the Service will be able to determine if they have excess capacity on the firing range. If they do, the range could be rented out to other police services in need of weapon re-certification.
