What style of ceiling fan should I get?
Ceiling fans can be a fairly prominent part of any room, so settling on the right design is important. Both indoor and outdoor ceiling fans come in a wide range of styles. Modern ceiling fans feature a sleek, clean design that can contemplate minimalist décor. Rustic ceiling fans can work well in a farmhouse style home. Check out the finish, pull cord and fan blades to get a good idea how a ceiling fan might work in your space.
What size ceiling fan do I need?
Your ceiling fan needs to have enough room to rotate its blades and allow air to circulate properly. To determine what size you need, measure straight across from the fan blade tip to the opposite blade tip. Here’s a quick list of typical fan sizes and their matching room dimensions:
• 32-inch fan: Rooms up to 80 square feet
• 42-inch fan: Rooms between 80 and 120 square feet
• 44-inch fan: Rooms between 120 and 144 square feet
• 52-inch fan: Rooms 144 square feet and larger
How can I tell if my ceiling fan is well constructed?
The better the construction, the longer your ceiling fan will be around to provide you with a cooling breeze. To find out if yours is well constructed, check to see if the blades and motor windings are the correct match. Double-shielded bearings with self-contained oil reservoirs ensure your fan will run quietly and smoothly. Sealed fan blades will also help prevent warping over time. Durable materials and finishes can also indicate quality construction.
Are energy efficient ceiling fans worth the extra cost?
While the added upfront cost may deter you at first, keep in mind that energy efficient fans will save you money over time. These fans maximize air circulation to cut down electricity use and therefore go easier on your utility bill. Look for an “Energy Star” sticker on your ceiling fan to ensure its energy efficient.
How are different ceiling fans installed?
The method of installation depends on the height and type of ceiling you have. A general rule is that ceiling fans should be installed about 8 feet from the ground. This means if your ceilings are high, you may need a downrod to bring it to the correct height. Low ceilings require close or flush-mount installation, also known as hugger ceiling fans. Sloped ceilings can still accommodate a ceiling fan with an angle mount.
