This is a significantly competitive alternative to technologies such as the more expensive alloys or metallurgically clad pipe. Its effectiveness has been recognised with a recent major contract award in Brazil and claiming one of the most prestigious pipeline industry Awards in 2012 - the Pipeline Industries Guild Award.

This video shows the the O-lay technology and how a pipeline is installed in deep water.
With the O-lay method it is easier and cheaper to install pipeline in any water depth.
Due to the fact that almost all the work is prepared onshore (including welding and inspecting the pipe) the pipe can be installed at a speed of 25 km per day.
Welding quality is very high because most welds are produced with sub-merged arc welding (SAW) and the final joints are welded in the fire line with an automatic orbital welding system.
The pipeline is spiraled in the elastic area of the steel and then transported to the installation location. (see previous video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhyAQuUtzdg)
A PLET can be connected to the pipeline on board of the vessel and then sunk down its final position. (shown at 0m24s)
The pipeline can be installed with a "simple" lay barge that is specially designed for the installation of pipe. The pipe is then provided from the large spiral of pipe (shown from 1m50s)
feeding the pipeline through the lay barge over the mid stinger in the elastic area of the steel of the pipeline. Pipe is not being deformed like with the reel lay.
This method of spiralling a steel pipe for offshore installation is developed by Jan Buijvoets.

With the O-lay method it is easier and cheaper to install pipeline in any water depth.
Due to the fact that almost all the work is prepared onshore (including welding and inspecting the pipe) the pipe can be installed at a speed of 25 km per day.
Welding quality is very high because most welds are produced with sub-merged arc welding (SAW) and the final joints are welded in the fire line with an automatic orbital welding system.
The pipeline is spiraled in the elastic area of the steel and then transported to the installation location. (see previous video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhyAQuUtzdg)
A PLET can be connected to the pipeline on board of the vessel and then sunk down its final position. (shown at 0m24s)
The pipeline can be installed with a "simple" lay barge that is specially designed for the installation of pipe. The pipe is then provided from the large spiral of pipe (shown from 1m50s)
feeding the pipeline through the lay barge over the mid stinger in the elastic area of the steel of the pipeline. Pipe is not being deformed like with the reel lay.
This method of spiralling a steel pipe for offshore installation is developed by Jan Buijvoets.
