Castorone is an ice-class pipe laying vessel (PLV) being built for Saipem, a subsidiary of Italian energy company Eni. In her first job, the new vessel will be used to perform marine activities for the development of the Jack and Saint Malo (JSM) fields in the US Gulf of Mexico. She will be deployed in the first quarter of 2013 to transport and install a crude oil export pipeline.
In March 2011, Keppel Shipyard, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine, was contracted for the completion of the Castorone. The project is being jointly undertaken by Keppel Shipyard and its sister company Keppel Singmarine.
The two companies are responsible for detailed engineering, fabricating marine systems and outfitting, and installation and integration of marine and pipe laying equipment. They are also responsible for commissioning the marine systems and conducting sea trials.
The ship arrived at Keppel Shipyard for outfitting after being constructed in China. An official naming ceremony for the new build was held in Singapore in September 2012. The pipe layer is expected to be delivered in January 2013.
Navalimpianti Tecnimpianti Group was contracted to design and assemble the vessel's pipe handling and storage system. Engineering assistance for the completion of the design was provided by Navalprogetti, a ship design company.
Design and dimensions of the Castorone PLV
Castorone's design was completed by Navalprogetti. The vessel's resistance and propulsion tests were undertaken at Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI) of St. Petersburg, Russia.
The length between perpendiculars was elongated from originally decided to be 260m to 266.4m to increase the buoyancy and structural support capacity of the hull at bow.
The whole hull was brought together and fitted in the aft part with two structural skegs to support the shaft line. The vessel also has a helicopter deck. It is suitable for the operations of the Sikorsky S-61 N helicopter.
With a handling capacity of over 500m/hr, the vessel's pipe deck receivers, handling and storage systems help to minimise the transfer time between the pipe barge and PLV holds. For each pipe hold, the system can handle single or multiple pipe holds and pipe stores.
The transit speed of the vessel will be 14kt, while her bollard pull with main propellers will be 180t. Pipe laying capacity is 12m for the triple joint or 18m for double joint, with pipe size up to 48in excluding coating.
The overall length of the vessel excluding its ramp is 290m. Moulded breadth is 39m and transit draft is 6.5m, while minimum operational draft is 7m. Displacement of the vessel at maximum operational draft of 10m is 89,000t.
Castorone accommodation and other facilities
A total of 702 people can be accommodated onboard the vessel. Other facilities will include a mess room, offices, conference rooms, television rooms, crew lifts, and a gymnasium/recreation room.
Cargo/tank capacity and deck equipment of Saipem's Castorone
The vessel will feature a cargo deck with a clear deck area of 4,300m2. Fuel oil tank capacity will be 6,500m3, fresh water capacity will be 941m3 and ballast water capacity will be 30,000m3.
Castorone will be fitted with a knuckle boom crane. Safe working load (SWL) of the crane at a 30m outreach will be 600t, and at 46m will be 350t. There will be two gantry cranes, each of 52t capacity at 35m, and three tensioners of 250t each. The vessel will also be equipped with an abandonment and recovery (A&R;) winch.
Castorone propulsion and manoeuvring
The vessel's power plant will be comprised of eight main generator sets, each capable of generating 8,400kW at 600rpm. There will also be an emergency generator of 1,200kW capacity. Power will be distributed through two separate switchboards of 11kV.
Castorone will be fitted with eight side thrusters. These will include two bow thrusters and six azimuth thrusters.
For automatic position and heading, the vessel will be provided with a fully redundant Dynamic Positioning (DP) Class-3 control system comprised of two HiPAPs (high precision acoustic positioning) 500 for 3,000m of water depth and two differential global positioning system (DGPS) reference systems.

Pipe-laying ship
A pipelaying ship is a maritime vessel used in the construction of subsea infrastructure. It serves to connect oil production platforms with refineries on shore. To accomplish this goal a typical pipelaying vessel carries a heavy lift crane, used to install pumps and valves, and equipment to lay pipe between subsea structures.
Lay methods consist of J-lay and S-lay and can be reel-lay or welded length by length. Pipelaying ships make use of dynamic positioning systems or anchor spreads to maintain the correct position and speed while laying pipe.
Recent advances have been made, with pipe being laid in water depths of more than 2,500 metres.
The term "pipelaying vessel" or "pipelayer" refers to all vessels capable of laying pipe on the ocean floor. It can also refer to "dual activity" ships. These vessels are capable of laying pipe on the ocean floor in addition to their primary job. Examples of dual activity pipelayers include barges, modified bulk carriers, modified drillships semi-immersible laying vessels among others.

The first part of a 380-kilometre-long gas export trunkline, called Rota Cabiúnas (the Cabiúnas route), was installed by Van Oord in 2014. SapuraKencana 1200 launched in April 2014. The DP3 vessel is 156m long, can lay 6in to 60in diameter pipelines, accommodate 300 personnel, and has a 1,200t crane and a helideck. The SapuraKencana 1200 developed by Ulstein Sea of Solutions is equipped with a ZPMC fully revolving derrick crane. The vessel is designed as a self propelled vessel with a 10-point mooring system for operations in waterdepths upto 150 m. For deep water operations the vessel utilizies its DP system. The SapuraKencana 1200 is designed aiming for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness and features a center single joint firing line to optimize pipelaying operations that are not hampered by vertical motions due to roll. The firing line and the single joint fabrication areas are on a tween deck completely covered by the main deck. This provides a clean and dry environment for the pipelay equipment and an unobstructed main deck. -

Shallow water pipelay barge Stingray at Cabiúnas, Brazil
The first part of a 380-kilometre-long gas export trunkline, called Rota Cabiúnas (the Cabiúnas route), was installed by Van Oord in 2014. Main contractor Saipem engaged Van Oord to make use of its expertise and equipment to install 14.6 km of pipeline in water depths ranging from 8 to 40 m. A suitable job for shallow water pipelay barge Stingray, because it’s especially designed to lay pipelines in shallow water depths. Despite the wave and weather conditions, the project was completed successfully by the end of 2014.

Castorone is an ice-class pipe laying vessel (PLV) being built for Saipem, a subsidiary of Italian energy company Eni. In her first job, the new vessel will be used to perform marine activities for the development of the Jack and Saint Malo (JSM) fields in the US Gulf of Mexico. She will be deployed in the first quarter of 2013 to transport and install a crude oil export pipeline.
In March 2011, Keppel Shipyard, a subsidiary of Keppel Offshore & Marine, was contracted for the completion of the Castorone. The project is being jointly undertaken by Keppel Shipyard and its sister company Keppel Singmarine.
The two companies are responsible for detailed engineering, fabricating marine systems and outfitting, and installation and integration of marine and pipe laying equipment. They are also responsible for commissioning the marine systems and conducting sea trials.
The ship arrived at Keppel Shipyard for outfitting after being constructed in China. An official naming ceremony for the new build was held in Singapore in September 2012. The pipe layer is expected to be delivered in January 2013.
Navalimpianti Tecnimpianti Group was contracted to design and assemble the vessel's pipe handling and storage system. Engineering assistance for the completion of the design was provided by Navalprogetti, a ship design company.
Design and dimensions of the Castorone PLV
Castorone's design was completed by Navalprogetti. The vessel's resistance and propulsion tests were undertaken at Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI) of St. Petersburg, Russia.
The length between perpendiculars was elongated from originally decided to be 260m to 266.4m to increase the buoyancy and structural support capacity of the hull at bow.
The whole hull was brought together and fitted in the aft part with two structural skegs to support the shaft line. The vessel also has a helicopter deck. It is suitable for the operations of the Sikorsky S-61 N helicopter.
With a handling capacity of over 500m/hr, the vessel's pipe deck receivers, handling and storage systems help to minimise the transfer time between the pipe barge and PLV holds. For each pipe hold, the system can handle single or multiple pipe holds and pipe stores.
The transit speed of the vessel will be 14kt, while her bollard pull with main propellers will be 180t. Pipe laying capacity is 12m for the triple joint or 18m for double joint, with pipe size up to 48in excluding coating.
The overall length of the vessel excluding its ramp is 290m. Moulded breadth is 39m and transit draft is 6.5m, while minimum operational draft is 7m. Displacement of the vessel at maximum operational draft of 10m is 89,000t.
Castorone accommodation and other facilities
A total of 702 people can be accommodated onboard the vessel. Other facilities will include a mess room, offices, conference rooms, television rooms, crew lifts, and a gymnasium/recreation room.
Cargo/tank capacity and deck equipment of Saipem's Castorone
The vessel will feature a cargo deck with a clear deck area of 4,300m2. Fuel oil tank capacity will be 6,500m3, fresh water capacity will be 941m3 and ballast water capacity will be 30,000m3.
Castorone will be fitted with a knuckle boom crane. Safe working load (SWL) of the crane at a 30m outreach will be 600t, and at 46m will be 350t. There will be two gantry cranes, each of 52t capacity at 35m, and three tensioners of 250t each. The vessel will also be equipped with an abandonment and recovery (A&R;) winch.
Castorone propulsion and manoeuvring
The vessel's power plant will be comprised of eight main generator sets, each capable of generating 8,400kW at 600rpm. There will also be an emergency generator of 1,200kW capacity. Power will be distributed through two separate switchboards of 11kV.
Castorone will be fitted with eight side thrusters. These will include two bow thrusters and six azimuth thrusters.
For automatic position and heading, the vessel will be provided with a fully redundant Dynamic Positioning (DP) Class-3 control system comprised of two HiPAPs (high precision acoustic positioning) 500 for 3,000m of water depth and two differential global positioning system (DGPS) reference systems.

The SapuraKencana 1200 developed by Ulstein Sea of Solutions is equipped with a ZPMC fully revolving derrick crane. The vessel is designed as a self propelled vessel with a 10-point mooring system for operations in waterdepths upto 150 m. For deep water operations the vessel utilizies its DP system.
The SapuraKencana 1200 is designed aiming for maximum efficiency and cost effectiveness and features a center single joint firing line to optimize pipelaying operations that are not hampered by vertical motions due to roll. The firing line and the single joint fabrication areas are on a tween deck completely covered by the main deck. This provides a clean and dry environment for the pipelay equipment and an unobstructed main deck.

Born in 1950, lives and works in Dublin.
Nigel Rolfe has been active as a performance artist since the 1970s, more recently moving into photography and video, though nearly always trading in images relating to his performance work, or to specific objects used in his performances. He has developed an international reputation over the last 30 years for his careful execution of aesthetic gesture through the interaction between his body and the material world. Rolfe’s work encompasses many media that include sound and audio production, video and photography. His primary reputation for the past thirty years is working live, making performances throughout Europe, and the former Eastern Block, North America and Japan. He has participated in the Biennales of Kwangju in 1997 and Sao Paulo in 1998. His retrospective exhibition Archive was shown at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 1994, and Nigel Rolfe Videos 1983 – 1996 was exhibited as an installed retrospective at The Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1996.
He is Visiting Professor in Fine Art at the Royal College of Art in London, and Senior Visiting Critic to postgraduate fine art courses in the United States and Europe. In the 1980s and 90s he worked with the pan-European group Black Market International.
Since the late 1990s he has made solo performances in Ireland at the National Sculpture Factory in Cork in 1998, the Cork Film Centre in 2002, The Church Gallery, Limerick in 2003 and Mount Shannon, Co. Clare in 2004 both as part of the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s National programme.

Returning from our party adventures we hang out with the awesome pirates from SV Convivia where our friend Tucker ends up giving all 3 of us tattoos! Finally the Girl Crew season begins with the arrival of Miss England and Miss Austria. We begin preparing Delos to venture across the Atlantic from Africa to South America.
