Parliament

In modern politics and history, a parliament is a legislative, elected body of government. Generally a modern parliament has three functions: representing the electorate, making laws, and overseeing the government (i.e., hearings, inquiries).

Although some restrict the use of the word parliament to parliamentary systems, it is also commonly used to describe the legislature in presidential systems (i.e. the French parliament), even where it is not in the official name.

Historically, parliaments included various kinds of deliberative, consultative, and judicial assemblies (i.e. the mediaeval parlements).

Etymology

The term is derived from Anglo-Norman parlement, from the verb parler 'talk'. The meaning evolved over time: originally any discussion, conversation, or negotiation (attested around 1100), through various kinds of deliberative or judicial groups, often summoned by the monarch. By 1400, it had come to mean in Britain specifically the British supreme legislature.

Jatiyo Sangshad

The Jatiyo Sangsad ("National Parliament"; Bengali: জাতীয় সংসদ Jatiyô Sôngsôd), often referred to simply as the Sangsad or JS and also known as the House of the Nation, is the supreme legislative body of Bangladesh. The current parliament of Bangladesh contains 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved for women, which are apportioned on elected party position in the parliament. Elected occupants are called Members of Parliament or MP. The 10th National Parliamentary Election was held on 5 January 2014 and under normal conditions, elections are called every five years.

The leader of the party (or alliance of parties) holding the majority of seats becomes the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and the head of the government. The President of Bangladesh, the ceremonial head of state, is chosen by Parliament.

The parliament is housed in the Jatiyo Sangsad Bhaban (জাতীয় সংসদ ভবন Jatiyô Sôngsôd Bhôbôn) designed by the American architect, Louis Kahn.

Since the December 2008 national election, the current majority party is the Bangladesh Awami League. It is led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Tarana Halim

Tarana Halim (born August 16, 1966) is a Bangladeshi politician. Since July 2014, she has been serving as the state minister of the Post and Telecommunications Division under the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology of the Government of Bangladesh. She has been an actress, lawyer, playwright, TV show host and director.

Career

Halim got her break-through in acting by working in the TV plays Sneho and Dhakaye Thaki.

Halim served as the general secretary of Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, a cultural organization.

On March 20, 2009, Halim was elected Member of Parliament of one of the 45 reserved women seats.

Halim is married to actor Ahmed Rubel.
