Expo 58, also known as the Brussels World’s Fair (Dutch: Brusselse Wereldtentoonstelling, French: Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Bruxelles), was held from 17 April to 19 October 1958.[1] It was the first major World's Fair after World War II.
Background:
Nearly 15,000 workers spent three years building the 2 square kilometres (490 acres) 2 km² site, found on the Heysel plateau, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) northwest of central Brussels, Belgium. Many of the buildings were re-used from the Brussels International Exposition (1935), which had been held on the same site.[2]
Every 25 years starting in 1855, Belgium had staged large national events to celebrate its national independence following the Belgian Revolution of 1830. However, the Belgian government under prime minister Achille Van Acker decided to forego celebrations in 1955 to have additional funding for the 1958 Expo.[3]
Expo 58 was the 11th World's Fair hosted by Belgium, and the fifth in Brussels, following the fairs in 1888, 1897, 1910 and 1935. After Expo 58, Belgium has so far not arranged any more world fairs.

World's fair
A world's fair, world fair, world exposition, or universal exposition (sometimes expo or Expo for short) is a large public exhibition. These exhibitions vary in character and are held in varying parts of the world. The next world's fair is Expo 2017 and is to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Since the 1928 Convention Relating to International Exhibitions came into force, the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE; English: International Exhibitions Bureau) has served as an international sanctioning body for world's fairs. BIE-approved fairs are of three types: universal, international, and specialized. They usually last from three weeks to six months.
History
World's fairs originated in the French tradition of national exhibitions, a tradition that culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This fair was followed by other national exhibitions in continental Europe and the United Kingdom.
The best-known 'first World Expo' was held in The Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, United Kingdom, in 1851, under the title "Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations". The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was an idea of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's husband, and is usually considered to be the first international exhibition of manufactured products. It influenced the development of several aspects of society, including art-and-design education, international trade and relations, and tourism. These events have resulted in a remarkable form of Prince Albert's life history, one that continues to be reflected in London architecture in a number of ways, including in the Albert Memorial later erected to the Prince. This expo was the most obvious precedent for the many international exhibitions, later called world's fairs, that have continued to be held to the present time.

Jonathan Coe
Jonathan Coe (born 19 August 1961) is an English novelist and writer. His work has an underlying preoccupation with political issues, although this serious engagement is often expressed comically in the form of satire. For example, What a Carve Up! reworks the plot of an old 1960s spoof horror film of the same name. It is set within the "carve up" of the UK's resources which some feel was carried out by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative governments of the 1980s.
Early life and education
Coe was born in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He was born on 19 August 1961 to Roger and Janet (née Kay) Coe. He studied at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Trinity College, Cambridge. He taught at the University of Warwick, where he completed an MA and PhD in English Literature.
Career
Coe has long been interested in both music and literature. In the mid-1980s he played with a band (The Peer Group) and tried to get a recording of his music. He also wrote songs and played keyboards for a short-lived feminist cabaret group, Wanda and the Willy Warmers.

Every 25 years starting in 1855, Belgium had staged large national events to celebrate its national independence following the Belgian Revolution of 1830. However, the Belgian government under prime minister Achille Van Acker decided to forego celebrations in 1955 to have additional funding for the 1958 Expo.[3]

Background:
Nearly 15,000 workers spent three years building the 2 square kilometres (490 acres) 2 km² site, found on the Heysel plateau, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) northwest of central Brussels, Belgium. Many of the buildings were re-used from the Brussels International Exposition (1935), which had been held on the same site.[2]

The Atomium is the landmark of Brussels. It was constructed for the EXPO 58 and was originally provided with an aluminum outer skin. In 2004 the outer skin was replaced by high-grade steel. Grand-Place
A web of narrow cobbled streets suddenly opens out into the vast Grand-Place - economic and social heart of Brussels since the Middle Ages. The array of filigree gothic buildings is dominated by the asymmetrical Hôtel de Ville, built in the 15th century. Its 96m (315ft) spire is topped with a gilded copper statue of St Michael. Opposite the Town Hall and almost as grand is the Maison du Roi, commissioned in 1515 and faithfully rebuilt in the 1890s. Sometime pied-à-terre of the Hapsburg monarchy, the building now hosts the Musée de la Ville de Bruxelles whose small collection includes tapestries and altarpieces, as well as the costumes worn by the Manneken-Pis. A series of lavish guild houses complete the rectangle of the square - number 10 still houses the guild of brewers, Maison de l'Arbre d'Or. Events, displays and markets are often held in the Grand-Place.

Manneken-Pis (Statue of the Pissing Boy)
The Rue de l'Etuve leads from the grandeur of Grand-Place to this allegory of irreverence and symbol of Bruxellois self-mockery - a bronze statuette of a urinating boy. If it were not for the occupation of the young child, the sculpture might resemble an angelic putto, such as the ones decorating the facade of the nearby Bourse (Stock Exchange), said to have been sculpted by Rodin. Jérôme Duquesnoy cast Manneken-Pis in the 1660s, perhaps as a reference to the peasant lads of legend, who extinguished fires with their urine. Manneken-Pis is regularly kitted out in a choice of some 800 outfits supplied by companies, charities and other organisations.

Musée du Cacao et du Chocolat (Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate)
This delightful little museum located in a magnificent 17th century house on a corner of the Grand-Place pays homage to one of Belgium's most famous products. It traces the history of chocolate from the time of the old Maya Empire, and explains the production processes involved in making the modern sweet delicacy, including audio-visual presentations and demonstrations by masters of the chocolatier's art.

This video is my own personal experience in that I had in Erbil, Iraq and only Erbil. I did not travel around anywhere else in Iraq and can not speak for other places. But from my knowledge and research, Erbil is one of the most peaceful cities within Iraq and varies greatly in culture due to the Kurdistan way of life and government, which they're very proud of. Please take this video as an educational experience about another city in Iraq aside from the ones we see/hear on the news every day. Political or negative comments will not be welcome. Just enjoy :)

The Atomium is the landmark of Brussels. It was constructed for the EXPO 58 and was originally provided with an aluminum outer skin. In 2004 the outer skin was replaced by high-grade steel. Since then, the Atomium glooms in new splendor.
The Atomium represents an iron crystal structure of 9 atoms and is symbolic of the peaceful use of the nuclear energy.
Even if the use of the nuclear energy is generally questioned today because of the after-subsequent costs and because of the risk, the Atomium still represents a highly interesting architecture and is beautiful to look at.
An elevator in the inner tube leads to the topmost sphere, from where we can enjoy a magnificent view over Brussels. From here, you have to go back to the ground floor and via escalators and staircases to further spheres. A fascinating light show is partly offered in the escalators just like in a mezzanine floor. It is left to the imagination of the observer whether he imagines himself in a spaceship or whether he is exposed as an electron to the forces of the universe. In a further mezzanine you see a small exhibition with items from the 1958.
In a separate building opposite the entrance is the cashier and a coffee shop.

Das Atomium stellt eine Eisen-Kristallstruktur aus 9 Atomen dar und steht symbolisch für die friedliche Nutzung der Kernenergie.
Auch wenn die Nutzung der Kernenergie heute wegen der Nachfolgelasten und wegen des Risikos generell in Frage gestellt wird, so stellt das Atomium nach wie vor eine hochinteressante Architektur dar und ist wunderschön anzusehen.
In der inneren Säule führt ein Aufzug in das oberste Stockwerk, von wo aus wir einen herrlichen Blick über Brüssel genießen. Im Anschluss daran fährt man wieder ins Erdgeschoss und von dort aus mittels Rolltreppen und Treppen in weitere Kugeln. In den Rolltreppen wird zum Teil eine faszinierende Lichtshow geboten, ebenso wie in einem Zwischengeschoss. Es ist der Fantasie des Betrachters überlassen, ob er sich in einem Raumschiff wähnt oder ob er als Elektron den Kräften des Universums ausgesetzt ist. In einem weiteren Zwischengeschoss ist eine kleine Ausstellung mit Gegenständen aus dem Jahr 1958 eingerichtet.
In einem Nebengebäude gegenüber dem Eingang befindet sich die Kasse und ein Café.

Expo 58 was the 11th World's Fair hosted by Belgium, and the fifth in Brussels, following the fairs in 1888, 1897, 1910 and 1935. After Expo 58, Belgium has so far not arranged any more world fairs.

Good-looking girls and sinister spies: a naive Englishman at loose in Europe in Jonathan Coe's brilliant comic novel. London, 1958: unassuming civil servant Thomas Foley is plucked from his desk at the Central Office of Information and sent on a six-month trip to Brussels. His task: to keep an eye on The Brittania, a brand new pub which will form the heart of the British presence at Expo 58 - the biggest World's Fair of the century, and the first to be held since the Second World War. As soon as he arrives at the site, Thomas feels that he has escaped a repressed, backward-looking country and fallen headlong into an era of modernity and optimism. He is equally bewitched by the surreal, gigantic Atomium, which stands at the heart of this brave new world, and by Anneke, the lovely Flemish hostess who meets him off his plane. Brusel - Československá expozice na světové výstavě Expo 58 byla snem, který měl k životu v tehdejší komunistické společnosti hodně daleko. Podoba československé expozice znamenala pro svět šok. Země, která se ještě nevzpamatovala ze stalinského útlaku, se představila množstvím uměleckých či průmyslových výrobků a nápadů, jež plynule navázaly na špičkovou úroveň designu i masarykovského Československa. Výstava se celkově nesla v duchu víry a naděje, že tehdejší objevy a technologie budou v budoucnosti sloužit humanistickým účelům.
