Florence Leontine Mary Welch (born 28 August 1986) is an English musician, singer, and songwriter. She is best known as the lead vocalist of the indie rock band Florence + the Machine.
Florence + the Machine's debut album, Lungs, was released in 2009; on 17 January 2010, the album reached the top position in the UK after being on the chart for 28 consecutive weeks. Lungs won the Brit Award for Best British Album in 2010. The group's second studio album, Ceremonials, released in October 2011, debuted at number one in the UK and number six in the US. The band's third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful was released in 2015 to very positive reviews on Metacritic, and topped the UK and US charts.
Florence Leontine Mary Welch was born in Camberwell, London on 28 August 1986. Her father is Nicholas Russell "Nick" Welch, a British advertising executive. Her mother, Evelyn Welch (née Evelyn Kathleen Samuels), is an American immigrant from New York who was educated at Harvard University and the Warburg Institute, University of London. Evelyn is currently Professor of Renaissance Studies and Vice-Principal for Arts and Sciences at King's College London. Nick and Evelyn later divorced in 1990, and both remarried. When she was 13 years old, Welch, her mother, and her two younger siblings moved in with their next-door neighbour and his three teenage children. According to Welch, "We get on brilliantly now, but it was a nightmare then. I just used to stay in my room and dance around". Welch is the niece of the satirist Craig Brown via Brown's wife and Welch's aunt, Frances Welch, and granddaughter of Colin Welch (James Colin Ross Welch), former deputy editor of The Daily Telegraph and former Daily Mail parliamentary sketchwriter, originally of Cambridgeshire. Welch's uncle (her mother's brother) is actor John Stockwell.
Florence (/ˈflɒrəns/ FLOR-əns; Italian: Firenze [fiˈrɛntse]) is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany and of the Metropolitan City of Florence. It is the most populous city in Tuscany, with approximately 382,000 inhabitants, expanding to over 1,520,000 in the metropolitan area.
Florence is famous for its history: a centre of medieval European trade and finance and one of the wealthiest cities of the time, it is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called "the Athens of the Middle Ages". A turbulent political history includes periods of rule by the powerful Medici family, and numerous religious and republican revolutions. From 1865 to 1871 the city was the capital of the recently established Kingdom of Italy.
The Historic Centre of Florence attracts millions of tourists each year, and Euromonitor International ranked the city as the world's 89th most visited in 2012, with 1.8 million visitors. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982. The city is noted for its culture, Renaissance art and architecture and monuments. The city also contains numerous museums and art galleries, such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Palazzo Pitti, and still exerts an influence in the fields of art, culture and politics. Due to Florence's artistic and architectural heritage, it has been ranked by Forbes as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Florence and the Machine (styled as Florence + the Machine) are an English indie rock band that formed in London in 2007, consisting of lead singer Florence Welch, Isabella Summers, and a collaboration of other artists. The band's music received praise across the media, especially from the BBC, which played a large part in their rise to prominence by promoting Florence and the Machine as part of BBC Introducing. At the 2009 Brit Awards they received the Brit Awards "Critics' Choice" award. The band's music is renowned for its dramatic and eccentric production and also Welch's vocal performances.
The band's debut studio album, Lungs, was released on 6 July 2009, and held the number-two position for its first five weeks on the UK Albums Chart. On 17 January 2010, the album reached the top position, after being on the chart for twenty-eight consecutive weeks. As of October 2010, the album had been in the top forty in the United Kingdom for sixty-five consecutive weeks, making it one of the best-selling albums of 2009 and 2010. The group's second studio album, Ceremonials, released in October 2011, entered the charts at number one in the UK and number six in the US. The band's third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, was released on 2 June 2015. It topped the UK charts, and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, their first to do so. The album reached number one in a total of eight countries and the top ten of twenty. Also in 2015, the band was the headlining act at Glastonbury Festival, making Florence Welch the first British female headliner this century.

Through the looking glass into the British chanteuse's eccentric Georgian townhouse. “I don’t think I’m quite comfortable in minimalist spaces,” says multi-platinum selling artist Florence Welch of her whimsically cluttered London pad, captured in this episode of NOWNESS’s collaboration with Apartamento magazine. “It’s the first house that I moved into after I moved out of my mum’s – but my mum said I wasn’t allowed to move further than ten minutes from the house, so here I am.” “My mum said I wasn’t allowed to move further than ten minutes from the house, so here I am.” With her roots firmly in South London – it’s where Welch was born and also attended art school – the musician reimagined a “mature" version of her childhood bedroom and a cabinet of curiosities. “I haven’t really ch...

When I was a young girl in Leyte
My dresses were all hand-me-downs and scrubs
I’d see the people smile, and I would sing for them
How happy they all seemed when I would dance
We lived a stone’s throw from the palace
A simple country girl who had a dream
Ladies passing by of better class than I
How much it meant to me
To be like these
Is it a sin to love too much?
Is it a sin to care?
I’d do it all for you
How can it be unfair?
I know that when my number’s up
When I am called by God above
Don’t have my name inscribed into the stone
Just say, “Here lies love!” “Here lies love!” Here lies love!”
Just say, “Here lies love!” “Here lies love!” Here lies love!”
The most important things are love and beauty
It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor
To prosper and to fly
A basic human right
The feeling in your heart that you’re secure
Is it a sin to love too much?
Is it a sin to care?
I’d do it all for you
How can it be unfair?
I know that when my number’s up
When I am called by God above
Don’t have my name inscribed into the stone
Just say, “Here lies love!” “Here lies love!” Here lies love!”
Just say, “Here lies love!” “Here lies love!” Here lies love!”
I know that when my number’s up
When I am called by God above
Don’t have my name inscribed into the stone
Just say, “Here lies love!” “Here lies love!” Here lies love!”
