Herat (Pashto/Dari: هرات) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan, located in the western part of the country. Together with Badghis, Farah, and Ghor provinces, it makes up the south-western region of Afghanistan. Its primary city and administrative capital is Herat City. The province of Herat is divided into about 17 districts and contains over 1,000 villages. It has a population of about 1,780,000, making it the second most populated province in Afghanistan behind Kabul Province. The population is multi-ethnic but largely Persian-speaking.
Herat province shares border with Iran in the west and Turkmenistan in the north, making it an important trading province. The Trans-Afghanistan Pipeline (TAPI) is expected to pass through Herat from Turkmenistan to Pakistan and India in the south. The province has two airports, one is the Herat International Airport in the capital of Herat and the other is at the Shindand Air Base, which is one of the largest military bases in Afghanistan. The Salma Dam which is fed by the Hari River is also located in this province.
Herat (/hɛˈrɑːt/;Persian: هرات; Pashto: هرات; Ancient Greek: Ἀλεξάνδρεια ἡ ἐν Ἀρίοις, Alexandria Ariana; Latin: Alexandria Ariorum) is the third largest city of Afghanistan. It has a population of about 436,300, and serves as the capital of Herat province, situated in the fertile valley of the Hari River. It is linked with Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif via highway 1 or the ring road. It is further linked to the city of Mashhad in neighboring Iran through the border town of Islam Qala.
Herat dates back to the Avestan times and was traditionally known for its wine. The city has a number of historic sites, including the Herat Citadel and the Mosallah Complex. During the Middle Ages Herat became one of the important cities of Khorasan, as it was known as the Pearl of Khorasan. It has been governed by various Afghan rulers since the early 18th century. In 1717, the city was invaded by the Hotaki forces until they were expelled by the Afsharids in 1736. After Nader Shah's death and Ahmad Shah Durrani's rise to power in 1747, Herat became part of Afghanistan. It witnessed some political disturbances and military invasions during the early half of the 19th century but the 1857 Treaty of Paris ended hostilities of the Anglo-Persian War. Herat suffered from extensive destruction during the Soviet war in the 1980s, but certain parts of the city has been spared from it.
On the Road is a novel by American writer Jack Kerouac, based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across America. It is considered a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living life against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use. The novel, published in 1957, is a roman à clef, with many key figures in the Beat movement, such as William S. Burroughs (Old Bull Lee), Allen Ginsberg (Carlo Marx) and Neal Cassady (Dean Moriarty) represented by characters in the book, including Kerouac himself as the narrator Sal Paradise.
The idea for On the Road, Kerouac's second novel, was formed during the late 1940s in a series of notebooks, and then typed out on a continuous reel of paper during three weeks in April 1951. It was first published by Viking Press in 1957. After several film proposals dating from 1957, the book was finally made into a film, On the Road (2012), produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Walter Salles.

Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.
A province is almost always an administrative division, within a country or state. The term derives from the ancient Roman provincia, which was the major territorial and administrative unit of the Roman Empire's territorial possessions outside Italy. The term is now used in many countries.
In many countries with no actual provinces, "the provinces" or "the province" means outside the capital city.
The English word "province" is attested since about 1330 and derives from the 13th-century Old French "province", which itself comes from the Latin word "provincia", which referred to the sphere of authority of a magistrate; in particular, to a foreign territory.
A popular etymology is from Latin"pro-" ("on behalf of") and "vincere" ("to triumph" or "to take control of"). Thus a "province" would a territory or function that a Roman magistrate held control of on behalf of his government. In fact, the word Province is an ancient term from public law, which means: "office belonging to a magistrate". This agrees with the Latin term's earlier usage as a generic term for a jurisdiction under Roman law.

I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another. Hey everyone! it's been a very very long time since I've uploaded anything on here but last month (september) I went to Afghanistan for 7 days to visit my dad and spend my 25th birthday with him since I was living in Dubai which is only a 3 hour flight to Kabul. Afghan Jews in Israel By the end of 2004, only two Jews were left in Afghanistan, Zablon Simintov and Isaac Levy. Levy relied on charity, while Simentov ran a store selling carpets and jewelry until 2001. They lived at separate ends of the dilapidated Kabul synagogue. Both claimed to be in charge of the synagogue, and the owner of its Torah, accusing the other of theft and imposture. They kept denouncing each other to the authorities, and both spent time in Taliban jails, and the Taliban also confiscated the Torah. Recently, one of Simentov's acquaintances stated that if you had brought (him) a bottle of whiskey, he (Simentov) would be in "heaven." The contentious relationship between Simentov and Levy was dramatized in a play inspired by news reports of the two that appeared in internat...

This 2016 documentary shows us an Afghanistan back in time that might never return: a safe and beautiful place for travellers. What seems unthinkable today: Places in Afghanistan like Kabul, Herat, Kandahar, Band-e Amir or Bamiyan were dream destinations for travellers on the so-called ´hippie trail´ in the 1960s and 1970s. With lots of original footage, we see how enchanted Westerners felt in a country that was hospitable, relaxed and landscapes. With lots of film material from those days, we can understand how breathtaking this country once was. Many different travellers tell us about their experiences, starting with Tony and Maureen Wheeler, founders of famous traveller´s bible ´Lonely Planet´, singer Donovan who searched enlightenment in the East, or a former leftist terrorist from Ger...

Salma Dam is a hydroelectric power project that is built on the Hari River in Afghanistan’s Herat province. Since it was funded by the Indian Government, it is also known as Afghan-India Friendship Dam. The plant has a power generation capacity of 42 MW and is also a major irrigation resource that can irrigate 75,000 hectares of agricultural land. The dam location was connected by a 150-km dirt road to Herat. Nearest human habitation is also at least 50 km away from the dam. However, braving all odds and in extremely difficult conditions, the workers stayed on location for years and finished the work. The Dam was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on June 4, 2016. The project is located 165 km east of Herat town and connected with earthen road. D...

(6 Jun 2017) A bomb planted in a rickshaw killed at least seven people and wounded eight others in Herat city, an Afghan official said on Tuesday. General Mohammad Ayub Ansari, police chief of western Herat province, said Tuesday's blast took place near the main Sunni mosque in Herat city. Officials said that the toll could rise. An eyewitness said he came out of the mosque when he heard the explosion and saw seven bodies "completely burnt". No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. Earlier on Tuesday, Afghanistan's president invited the Taliban to peace talks, calling it their "last chance" to give up their 16-year insurgency and join the political process. "The death toll coud rise," he said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, told Al Jazeera that the group was not involved in the attack. Images posted to social media showed plumes of black smoke rising above a mosque complex. The reports came after a string of recent attacks in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, and as President Ashraf Ghani hosted a summit on security. On May...
A bomb blast was reported in Afghanistan's Herat province on Tuesday evening. The explosion rocked Jam-e-Mosque and more than 7 people lost their lives and at least 15 were injured. The National Directorate of Security (NDS) in a statement said the militants were arrested during an operation conducted by the Special Forces of the Afghan Intelligence. The other militants detained have been identified as Mushfiq, Wahidullah, Ghulam Mohammad, Baharuddin, and Syed Esa.
