Devils Tower (Lakota: Matȟó Thípila ("Bear Lodge") or Ptehé Ǧí ("Brown Buffalo Horn"), Arapaho: Wox Niiinon) is an igneous intrusion or laccolith in the Bear Lodge Mountains (part of the Black Hills) near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises dramatically 1,267 feet (386 m) above the surrounding terrain and the summit is 5,114 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first declared United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The Monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).
In recent years, about 1% of the Monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.
Tribes including the Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Lakota, and Shoshone had cultural and geographic ties to the monolith before non-Native Americans reached Wyoming. Their names for the monolith include: Aloft on a Rock (Kiowa), Bear's House (Cheyenne, Crow), Bear's Lair (Cheyenne, Crow), Daxpitcheeaasáao, "Home of bears" (Crow), Bear's Lodge (Cheyenne, Lakota), Bear's Lodge Butte (Lakota), Bear's Tipi (Arapaho, Cheyenne), Tree Rock (Kiowa), and Grizzly Bear Lodge (Lakota).
A tower is a tall structure, taller than it is wide, often by a significant margin. Towers are distinguished from masts by their lack of guy-wires and are therefore, along with tall buildings, self-supporting structures.
Towers are specifically distinguished from "buildings" in that they are not built to be habitable but to serve other functions. The principal function is the use of their height to enable various functions to be achieved including: visibility of other features attached to the tower such clock towers; as part of a larger structure or device to increase the visibility of the surroundings as in a fortified building such as a castle; or as a structural feature as an integral part of a bridge.
Towers can be stand alone structures or be supported by adjacent buildings or can be a feature on top of a large structure or building.
Towers have been used by mankind since prehistoric times. The oldest known may be the circular stone tower in walls of Neolithic Jericho (8000 BC). Some of the earliest towers were ziggurats, which existed in Sumerian architecture since the 4th millennium BC. The most famous ziggurats include the Sumerian Ziggurat of Ur, built the 3rd millennium BC, and the Etemenanki, one of the most famous examples of Babylonian architecture. The latter was built in Babylon during the 2nd millennium BC and was considered the tallest tower of the ancient world.
The Devil is a figure in some religions, particularly Abrahamic ones.
Devil may also refer to:
Tower Rock, also known as Grand Tower, is a rock formation and landmark island in the Mississippi River, in Brazeau Township, Perry County, Missouri, near the town of Wittenberg, Missouri, and across the river from Grand Tower, Illinois.
Tower Rock has also been dubbed with many names over the centuries: Cap de Roche, Cap St. Croix la Tour, La Roche de la Croix, Rock of St. Cosme, Castle Rock and Devil's Tower.
The earliest mention by Europeans of this island is by French missionary Jacques Marquette in 1673:
Another early mention of the rock was by French-Canadian seminarian priests: fathers Montigny, Davion and St. Cosme, who planted a cross on the rock in 1698.
A ridge directly across the river from the island is named Devil's Backbone.
Meriwether Lewis mentions the island in his journals, stating that rivermen who passed the rock would celebrate in a way similar to sailors crossing the equator, by raising a drink of spirits.
Lutherans from Germany considered this island their Plymouth Rock, for here they landed, after seeking a place where they could practice religious freedom.

See the Devil's Tower in Wyoming. The United States is full of natural wonders. Among them is the Devil's Tower, which resides in Wyoming. Set in the Black Hills, it is essentially a rock monument which stems from a rolling prairie. The tower is thought to be sacred to tribes who frequent the area. There are hundreds of depressions or lines in the side of Devil's Tower which make it a perfect crack climbing area. There is also a 1.3 mile paved trail that circles the tower, allowing visitors to experience the true size. It stands more than 1,200 feet above the surrounding land and the summit rises over 5,000 feet above sea level. The boundary of Devil's Tower encloses more than 1,300 acres. In 1906, the beautiful site was declared a United States National Monument by President ...

Climbing Devils Tower. This was our 2nd ascent in as many days. We also did the El Cracko Diablo route. A great alternative if Durrance is crowded. Check out the video of El Cracko here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFCIcaSbt_s
Climbing Devil's Tower (The Durance Route) on September 28th 2008 with a helmet cam. It took 4.5 hours for 4 of us to summit the tower so I condensed it into 10 minutes. Enjoy! We drove from Toronto, Canada and it took 24 hours straight. We drove a Winnebago and took 4-6 hour shifts, stopped at Mount Rushmore for a visit and continued to the tower. We arrived at 5pm Friday, practice climbed on Saturday and summated on Sunday. It was a fantastic climbing holiday with my friends. Thanks to Sylan Rocks Climbing Company for a great guides, Darrel and Chris. (Chris' company web address www.sylvanrocks.com) http://www.sylvanrocks.com/

Soloing Devil's Tower Instance using Mechanic (with Madogear)
Day 1 of the rally was raining all day, we decided to take the easy route out to devils tower.
Heard you knockin' on the
Devil's door
Come back tommorow baby
Cause he aint takin' any more
See you walkin' down on
Bourbon street
I can tell you girl
Who the man is you've got to meet
Well he's go the flashy diamonds
He's got the brand new car
Says he's got the kind of things
The kind of things that'll take you far
An' alls you've got to give
Alls ya got to give
Is a just a little bit 'o lovin' girl
Whoa no no yeah
Just a little bit 'o lovin girl
Whoa no no yeah
Well like a vampire
She stalks the streets at night
Say's he's gonna give you every thing you want and more
If the time is right
And no you aint got
You aint got
To take
But any bit of his lovin' girl
No no oh yeah
Any bit of his lovin girl
Say money's comin' in
But every thing is fine
Food on the fridge
And there's plenty of time
To get you back up on top again
Its better than bein' at the bottom
In the bitter end
But i got you in the game
The story's told
Devils come around
To take your soul
Said he wants to be your number one man
And tell you when to walk
And who to fuck
And when you can stand
The back seat of
A limosine
But if you make a million dollars
Baby you'll be the queen
Of it all
Oh no no yeah
You'll be the queen of it all
