Malawi (/məˈlɔːwi/, /məˈlɑːwi/ or /ˈmæləwi/; Chichewa: [maláβi] or [maláwi]), officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was formerly known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast, and Mozambique on the east, south and west. The country is separated from Tanzania and Mozambique by Lake Malawi. Malawi is over 118,000 km2 (45,560 sq mi) with an estimated population of 16,777,547 (July 2013 est.). Its capital is Lilongwe, which is also Malawi's largest city; the second largest is Blantyre and the third is Mzuzu. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name of the Nyanja people that inhabit the area. The country is also nicknamed "The Warm Heart of Africa".
Malawi is among the smallest countries in Africa. Lake Malawi takes about a third of Malawi's area.

Likoma Island Malawi Tour 2016 - Travel Malawi Guide
The team finished off Malawi's 2016 country tour with Likoma Island. We traveled on the MV Ilala from Monkey-port. It was one lovely and adventurous tour we have ever had. MV Ilala is a motor ship that has sailed on Lake Malawi since 1951. She is operated by Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and based in Monkey Bay, Malawi (on the southern end of the lake). Every week she crosses the lake all the way north to Chilumba, Malawi, near Tanzania (about 300 miles (480 km) from Monkey Bay) and then returns to Monkey Bay. Black Rhino Tracking on foot!
Tracking the rare Black Rhino on foot at Liwonde National park in Malawi. Staying at Mvuu camp we got up at 4am and set off with our guide, gun bearer and professional tracker. After finding fresh footprints we came across a family of 3 Black Rhino's and were able to get up close for several minutes before something spooked them and they ran off. Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts, the brightly coloured males achieving the highest prices. Provided with a good supply of oxygen and a light sedative in the water, once a month the fish are taken to the airport. The craggy rock scenery of Lake Malawi was not always below water. Only when the southern section of the East African Rift Valley filled with water did it become home to cichlids. On the extreme south east coast on the border with Mozambique is Mount Mulanje, a huge mountain range that formed during volcanic activity more than a hundred and thirty million years ago. At the foot of the mountain scenery grows one of the world’s finest varieties of tea. The Maravi Kingdom eventually became an independent country, Malawi, the warm and beating heart of Africa!

It extends more than six hundred kilometres from north to south, is up to eighty kilometres wide and in some sections is over seven hundred metres deep.Cichlids, the living jewels of Lake Malawi, are highly sought after among aquatic fish enthusiasts. The brightly-coloured males achieve the highest prices in both Europe and the U.S.A. Diving just off the coast is like being in a gigantic aquarium and around a thousand species of dazzling cichlids inhabit the rocky reefs around various islands. It is not necessary to dive deep to observe the Malawi cichlids as the most colourful varieties are to be found just below the surface. In the depths, strange craters rise from the muddy seabed. Some have a diameter of more than two metres and are one metre high. They are not volcanoes but the leks of male cichlids. The tiny fish spend months building the leks so as to make a good impression on passing females. Lake Malawi, the ‘Lake Of Stars’, is a paradise of nature where in 1980 the southern section became the first national park in the world to be used for the conservation of freshwater fish.

The team finished off Malawi's 2016 country tour with Likoma Island. We traveled on the MV Ilala from Monkey-port. It was one lovely and adventurous tour we have ever had.
MV Ilala is a motor ship that has sailed on Lake Malawi since 1951. She is operated by Malawi Shipping Company (MSC) and based in Monkey Bay, Malawi (on the southern end of the lake).
Every week she crosses the lake all the way north to Chilumba, Malawi, near Tanzania (about 300 miles (480 km) from Monkey Bay) and then returns to Monkey Bay. She carries both passengers and freight, and calls at major towns on both the Malawian and Mozambican coast, as well as at the two inhabited islands of the lake (Likoma and Chizumulu).
Though old, she remains the most important means of long-distance transport for the people living on the coast of the lake. She is 172 feet (52 m) long overall, has a gross tonnage of 620 tons and can accommodate up to 365 passengers and 100 tons of cargo

During our tour we stayed at beautiful Ulisa Bay Lodge. This is one lovely area. Full of life, friendly staff, delicious food and amazing company. The Ulisa fishing area is also close by where we had a chance to learn, interact and know a lot more about life on the island from the locals.
Ulisa Bay Lodge is a sanctuary for the explorers of the world. The lodge itself is a collection of chalets set around Ulisa Bay, all with stunning views over the lake and arguably one of the best sunsets in Africa.

While we were on the island we also visited Mango drift, with one long beautiful white sand beach. Mango Drift is a backpacker’s lodge located on the west side of Likoma Island on the beautiful waters of Lake Malawi.

We could not visit the island without going to see the historical and famous St Peter's Cathedral. The third largest cathedral in Central Africa! Built in 1903, dedicated in September 1905 and was consecrated in 1911 on an upland site.
This was one amazing tour we had and we would recommend you to try it whenever you visit Malawi or planning a holiday locally.

Lilongwe is Malawi’s Capital City, named after the great Lilongwe River that flows into Lake Malawi. It is an exceptionally green city with trees and patches of grassland covering a great deal of the city.
For centuries Lilongwe was a small fishing village on the banks of the River Lilongwe. It is at the centre of the country near the borders of Mozambique and Zambia and was used as an administrative centre by Colonial Britain.
The city is divided into New and Old. The Old Town to the South is based around the centuries old fishing village while New Town or Capital City grew up after President Banda moved the capital here from Zomba. New Town is where the government ministries, offices, Lilongwe accommodation and embassies are,and the Old Town is full of cafes, restaurants, bus stations and markets.
In the city centre there are lots of banks and Capital Hill where there are over a dozen government ministries.
The wet season in Lilongwe is from December to March and the average temperatures are in the 20s sometimes reaching into the 30s. From April to September daily temperatures can drop into the teens and nights can be into single numbers during these months.
Tobacco is the most important cash crop in Malawi, and the capital is the processing, selling and buying center of the industry. To catch a glimpse at the country's economic heart, visit the tobacco auction floors.

Tracking the rare Black Rhino on foot at Liwonde National park in Malawi. Staying at Mvuu camp we got up at 4am and set off with our guide, gun bearer and professional tracker. After finding fresh footprints we came across a family of 3 Black Rhino's and were able to get up close for several minutes before something spooked them and they ran off.
