Afghanistan i/æfˈɡænᵻstæn/ (Pashto/Dari: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located within South Asia and Central Asia. It has a population of approximately 32 million, making it the 42nd most populous country in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and east; Iran in the west; Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan in the north; and China in the far northeast. Its territory covers 652,000 km2 (252,000 sq mi), making it the 41st largest country in the world.
Human habitation in Afghanistan dates back to the Middle Paleolithic Era, and the country's strategic location along the Silk Road connected it to the cultures of the Middle East and other parts of Asia. Through the ages the land has been home to various peoples and witnessed numerous military campaigns; notably by Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Mongols, British, Soviet Russians, and in the modern-era by Western powers. The land also served as the source from which the Kushans, Hephthalites, Samanids, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Khiljis, Mughals, Hotaks, Durranis, and others have risen to form major empires.

Pakistan (i/ˈpækᵻstæn/ or i/pɑːkiˈstɑːn/; Urdu: پاكستان ALA-LC: Pākistān, pronounced [pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), officially the Islamic Republic of Pakistan (Urdu: اسلامی جمہوریۂ پاكستان ALA-LC: Islāmī Jumhūriyah Pākistān IPA: [ɪslɑːmiː d͡ʒʊmɦuːriəɪh pɑːkɪst̪ɑːn]), is a country in South Asia. It is the sixth-most populous country with a population exceeding 199 million people. It is the 36th largest country in the world in terms of area with an area covering 881,913 km2 (340,509 sq mi). Pakistan has a 1,046-kilometre (650 mi) coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman in the south and is bordered by India to the east, Afghanistan to the west, Iran to the southwest and China in the far northeast respectively. It is separated from Tajikistan by Afghanistan's narrow Wakhan Corridor in the north, and also shares a maritime border with Oman.
The territory that now constitutes Pakistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the Mehrgarh of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including Hindus, Indo-Greeks, Muslims, Turco-Mongols, Afghans and Sikhs. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, Alexander of Macedonia, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the subcontinent's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of the Subcontinent where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.

I was so excited for the opportunity to travel to Afghanistan. I traveled here alone in February of 2016 as a solo female American traveler. Though my primary objective was go skiing on their vast mountains (they apparently have some great slopes), I settled on exploring Kabul city, which immersed me in their culture and way of life. I'd go back to Afghanistan in a heartbeat. The people here are kind, just living their lives and the majority of them do like Americans. So, let's be kind to one another. Hey everyone! it's been a very very long time since I've uploaded anything on here but last month (september) I went to Afghanistan for 7 days to visit my dad and spend my 25th birthday with him since I was living in Dubai which is only a 3 hour flight to Kabul. When I travel to Afghanistan I stay in Kabul for the majority of my trip which is exactly what happened this time BUT I did manage to take a day trip to Panjshir Province. Panjshir is where my family is originally from, my mother was born there, my grandparents from both sides, etc...I thought about vlogging my trip because I figured Afghanistan is an interesting country that not many people have the chance to visit but once I arrived I was really just so caught up with seeing family and spending time with my dad that I kept forg...

He returned to Pakistan this month and found the entire country was a "powder keg ready to explode." To see where VICE goes to next, check out: http://www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-travel
Afghan cuisine has a style of its own. Fatty dishes are an important fuel in this nation of harsh landscapes and freezing winters, with oil used liberally and mutton fat traditionally added to many dishes. Unlike some in their region, Afghans like their food neither too spicy nor too hot, and they are renowned for their use of dried fruit and nuts.

While some places are on this list due to armed conflicts and violence, other places are on the list thanks to physical or biological calamities. Regardless of the reasons, the one thing all of these places have in common is that most western governments do not advise travel to them unless it is absolutely necessary. These are the 25 most dangerous places to visit as a tourist. Also, before we continue, just remember, being on this list doesn't necessarily mean the entire country is bad to visit (although it can). Just make sure to check on regional travel warnings. Afghanistan - 1st Right of Reply 1st Right of Reply by Afghanistan, at general debate of the 72nd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 19 - 25 September 2017).
Last month's massive bombings in the capital, Kabul, have underscored the difficulties the Afghanistan government has been having recently in containing a resurgent Taliban insurgency backed by a growing ISIL presence. The activities of the latter, with whom the Taliban currently seem to have a self-serving truce, are particularly worrisome because as Islamic State suffers military reverses in Syria and Iraq, it is looking to establish safer havens elsewhere and Afghanistan seems to fit the bill. Some of the more remote parts of the country, such as its most northerly provinces, have been attracting especial attention, not least because from there ISIL (or Daesh as it known) are believed to want to expand their influence into Central Asia and Russia. It's understandable then that the Af...

It was called Operation Moshtarak and it was supposed to be the defining moment of the Afghanistan conflict - an all-out assault by coalition forces on the Taliban-held city of Marjah in Helmand province. Long regarded as a "festering sore" by senior NATO officers, Marjah was seen as one of the last insurgent-controlled areas in the south of the country, a haven for several hundred fighters and a centre of poppy cultivation and opium production - a major source of Taliban income - and also for the mass manufacture of roadside bombs. Its anarchy and instability posed a growing threat to the regional capital Lashkar Gah, if not the whole of the country, and the time had come to clear it out, the coalition believed. As the attack got under way in February 2010, the coalition's public relati...

Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani on Tuesday termed United States (US) President Donald Trump's refusal to meet Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in New York over the pretext of being busy as "degrading" to Pakistan. PM Abbasi is likely to meet US Vice President Mike Pence on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York, where the premier will represent Pakistan. Rabbani, while chairing a Senate session, insisted that PM Abbasi should not meet Pence. "If Donald Trump does not have time to meet our prime minister, then there is no point holding a meeting with the vice president," he asserted, adding that the US approach towards Pakistan is "degrading". Ties between Islamabad and Washington have been terse since Trump announced a new policy for Afghanistan and Sou...

"Before I die, I want to go back to where I was born." Krishan Kumar Khanna grew up just outside Lahore, Pakistan's second-largest city. After a childhood he remembers fondly, his life changed dramatically in August 1947. As Britain left the Indian subcontinent, colonial planners hastily split it into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan. Khanna was forced to join one of the largest migrations in human history, as sectarian violence erupted and millions fled in both directions to save their lives. He has dreamed of going back ever since and, after trying for several years, Khanna finally obtained a visa to return to Pakistan. Despite deep tensions, he's determined to show that people in the neighbouring nations still have much more in common than that which divides them...
