Waylon Arnold Jennings (pronounced /ˈweɪlən ˈdʒɛnɪŋz/; June 15, 1937 – February 13, 2002) was an American singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. Jennings began playing guitar at 8 and began performing at 12 on KVOW radio. His first band was The Texas Longhorns. Jennings worked as a D.J. on KVOW, KDAV, KYTI, and KLLL. In 1958, Buddy Holly arranged Jennings's first recording session, of "Jole Blon" and "When Sin Stops (Love Begins)". Holly hired him to play bass. In Clear Lake, Iowa, Jennings gave up his seat on the ill-fated flight that crashed and killed Holly, J. P. Richardson, Ritchie Valens, and pilot Roger Peterson. The day of the flight was later known as The Day the Music Died. Jennings then worked as a D.J. in Coolidge, Arizona, and Phoenix. He formed a rockabilly club band, The Waylors. He recorded for independent label Trend Records and A&M Records, before succeeding with RCA Victor after achieving creative control.

My favorite Waylon concert. I do not own the copyright of this recording. I strongly recommend the original, high quality DVD for optimum enjoyment. With his great voice, hard-driving music and charismatic stage persona, Waylon Jennings (1937-2002) was one of country music’s biggest stars, and arguably its most naturally gifted. Born into small-town poverty in West Texas, music was his passion from a young age. Having started playing the guitar at eight, by his early teens he was playing in bands. After leaving school at 14, he worked for a few years picking cotton and in various other menial jobs, and then moved to the nearby city of Lubbock, where he got a job as a radio D.J. While working there he met Lubbock-born Buddy Holly, who, though only a year older than Waylon, was already one o...

Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers...

Finally made it to Luckenbach Texas. When the song by Waylon Jennings came out in 1976 or so, I promised myself that I would go there someday. Finally made the trip in 2002. Only took me 26 years. Bought a pair of boots and a sign that read "Life Is Too Short Not Too Live In Texas". Oh yeah, and a few Lone Star beers !! My kind of country... Also made side trips to Crawford (Bush's home town) and Fort Worth.
While on the tour of historic RCA Studio B in Nashville, I had the opportunity to play the studio's Steinway (only after Monica let the tour guide know I was a pianist, I was to shy). The first call session pianist to work in this studio was Floyd Cramer. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Don Gibson, Porter Wagner, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Hank Snow, Waylon Jennings, and The Everly Brothers all recorded here. This studio gave birth to the Nashville Sound ( a combintation of what was then Country and the emerging new style of Rock & Roll). It was built under the supervision/orders of Chet Atkins, so that Elvis Presley would have a place to record, apparently until this studio was built, all of Elvis' hits were recorded in the stairwell of the RCA records office building! Elvis loved to sit at this pi...

"Billy Joe Shaver is a singer, songwriter, and actor, called "the last great cowboy poet" by No Depression magazine. Shaver has led the sort of life that could only be captured in country music. He was born in 1939 in Corsicana, Texas. His father left before he was born, and his mother went to find work in Waco, leaving Shaver and his sister Patricia to be raised by their grandmother. Though his family was too poor to afford musical instruments, as a child, Shaver started to sing and write songs. On the urging of a high school friend, Shaver enlisted in the Navy, but was discharged after getting in a fight with an out-of-uniform officer. He later took a job at a sawmill, where an accident caused him to lose most of the fingers on his right hand. In 1966, Shaver came to Nashville and eventu...
