The EMD SD60 is a 3,800 horsepower (2,800 kW), 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division. Intended for heavy-duty drag freight or medium-speed freight service. It was introduced in 1984, and production ran until 1995.
The Burlington Northern Railroad (reporting mark BN) was a United States-based railroad company formed from a merger of four major U.S. railroads. Burlington Northern operated between 1970 and 1996.
Its historical lineage begins in the earliest days of railroading with the chartering in 1848 of the Chicago and Aurora Railroad, a direct ancestor line of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, which lends Burlington to the names of various merger-produced successors.
Burlington Northern purchased the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway on December 31, 1996 to form the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (later renamed BNSF Railway), which was owned by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation. That corporation was purchased by Berkshire Hathaway in 2009 which is controlled by investor Warren Buffett.
The Burlington Northern Railroad was the product of a March 2, 1970, merger of four major railroads—the Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad—as well as a few small jointly owned subsidiaries owned by the four. The merged railroad was initially going to be called Great Northern Pacific & Burlington Lines.

BNSF sure surprised the railfans with this epic power set this late in 2015! Three matching former BN SD60Ms lead the M-NTWDIL as it roars through the curve at Elk River and later in Becker. This was a throw back to how things used to be in the BN days...really made me wish the Burlington Northern was still around. Kudos to a very friendly crew as well! Filmed September 25, 2016 A heads up on Facebook indicated a westbound manifest had a pair of Burlington Northern SD60Ms leading it. As many of you may know, BN is the favorite in my book, so trackside I go. These guys were FLYING doing at best 60mph and making a very difficult chase, but always worth the effort.
this is just the most amazing sound of an Idling EMD SD60M
The last Soo Line SD60 left is seen roaring up Shoreham Hill in Ne Mpls. The 6061 was leading a rather long empty ballast train bound for Dresser, WI. The train was really working to get the train up and over Shoreham Hill; so much that the turbo even kicked out a large cloud of smoke! Copyright 2015 Douglas Hildebrandt, all rights reserved.
[Watch In High Definition] On May 28th, 2015 I got word UP 2430 would be on the day's Guadalupe Hauler. Just another SD60M, except this one has the "We Will Deliver" logo as well as a monstrous Nathan K3HL horn. I started out in Chatsworth, Ca eventually ending in Goleta, Ca. A distance of about 90 miles. The Guadalupe Hauler is a Monday - Friday job running between Gemco (Van Nuys, Ca) and Guadalupe, Ca with regular set outs going West, and pick ups going East. The same conductor, engineer, and brakeman have been working it for the past 2+ years. This train features a fantastic crew, consisting of a group of guys that I've known for quite some time personally. They love what I do, and always put on a show for the video camera. Whether it's leaning into the window for a wave, flashin...
BNSF SD60M 1402, accompanied by a Santa Fe C44-9W hold the Grand Forks-Noyes job, the '60M sporting its signature "underwater" K3, caused by the solenoid valve being place right beneath the horn. At West Maverick, the train meets its counterpart with identical power, making for an epic scene straight out of the 90s.
A slide show explaining the SD60M's better years in service. A;; from the BN. In my oppinion, The SD60M was made for BN's scheme.
