Bosnia (region)

Bosnia (Bosnian and Croatian: Bosna, Serbian: Босна; pronounced [bɔ̂sna]) is the northern region of Bosnia and Herzegovina, encompassing roughly 80% of the country; the other eponymous region, the southern part, is Herzegovina. Bosnia is an informal term for the whole country.

The two regions have formed a geopolitical entity since medieval times, and the name "Bosnia" commonly occurs in historical and geopolitical senses as generally referring to both regions (Bosnia and Herzegovina). The official use of the combined name started only in the late period of Ottoman-rule.

Geography

Bosnia lies mainly in the Dinaric Alps, ranging to the southern borders of the Pannonian plain, with the rivers Sava and Drina marking its northern and eastern borders.

The area of Bosnia comprises approximately 41,000 km², and makes up about 80% of the territory of the present-day state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. There are no true borders between the region of Bosnia and the region of Herzegovina. Unofficially, Herzegovina is south of the mountain Ivan planina. According to another unofficial definition, Herzegovina encompasses watersheds Neretva and Trebišnjica rivers.

Bosnia and Herzegovina (ⁱ/ˈbɒzniə ənd ˌhɛərtsəɡoʊˈviːnə, -ˌhɜːrt-, -ɡə-/ or /ˌhɜːrtsəˈɡɒvᵻnə/;Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian Latin script: Bosna i Hercegovina, Bosnian and Serbian Cyrillic script: Боснa и Херцеговина; pronounced [bôsna i xěrt͡seɡoʋina]), sometimes called Bosnia-Herzegovina or Bosnia & Herzegovina, abbreviated BiH or B&H, and in short often known informally as Bosnia, is a country in Southeastern Europe located on the Balkan Peninsula. Sarajevo is the capital and largest city. Bordered by Croatia to the north, west, and south; Serbia to the east; Montenegro to the southeast; and the Adriatic Sea to the south, with a coastline about 20 kilometres (12 miles) long surrounding the city of Neum. In the central and eastern interior of the country the geography is mountainous, in the northwest it is moderately hilly, and the northeast is predominantly flatland. The inland is a geographically larger region and has a moderate continental climate, bookended by hot summers and cold and snowy winters. The southern tip of the country has a Mediterranean climate and plain topography.

United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization to promote international co-operation. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II in order to prevent another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. The headquarters of the United Nations is in Manhattan, New York City, and experiences extraterritoriality. Further main offices are situated in Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The organization is financed by assessed and voluntary contributions from its member states. Its objectives include maintaining international peace and security, promoting human rights, fostering social and economic development, protecting the environment, and providing humanitarian aid in cases of famine, natural disaster, and armed conflict.

During the Second World War, US President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated talks on a successor agency to the League of Nations, and the United Nations Charter was drafted at a conference in April–June 1945; this charter took effect 24 October 1945, and the UN began operation. The UN's mission to preserve world peace was complicated in its early decades by the Cold War between the US and Soviet Union and their respective allies. The organization participated in major actions in Korea and the Congo, as well as approving the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. The organization's membership grew significantly following widespread decolonization in the 1960s, and by the 1970s its budget for economic and social development programmes far outstripped its spending on peacekeeping. After the end of the Cold War, the UN took on major military and peacekeeping missions across the world with varying degrees of success.

Creepy Bulgarian Tree The Balkans are certainly a mysterious region in Europe. This consists of several countries who often have trouble agreeing on their borders. Geographically speaking it’s the area that’s surrounded by the adriatic sea to the west, mediterranean to the south and the black sea to the east. The region ends north of Romania and this region is slightly smaller than the state of Texas. Someone was walking through the heart of the Balkan mountains in Bulgaria and came across this spooky looking tree. As you take a closer look you can tell it certainly looks a like a person with 2 legs, 2 arms and even a head! The person that snatched the photo said he was speechless when he first spotted it. The more you look at it the creepier it seems to get. 11. Mysterious Boulder This giant sphere shaped boulder was found in central Bosnia that’s been stumping archaeologists since it was discovered in April of 2016. Some claim that resembles something you would see in an Indiana Jones film but it’s certainly well buried into the ground so that doesn’t seem to be the case. Could it be evidence of a lost prehistoric civilization in the Balkans? This is the heaviest stone ball ever discovered and it has a radius 5 feet! This one is much larger than the stone balls found in Costa Rica, which can weigh up to 15 tons! The weight of this one here in Bosnia has not been determined yet. A myth in Bosnia talks about there being a bunch of these giant spheres around the country but they were broken to see if they contained gold. At the moment, there is no definitive explanation for these but no one is ruling out the possibility that it’s artificial made. 10. King Ballaios’ Palace 9. Oldest Forged Coins Counterfeiting might be a little bit older than you think. A man from Romania found what appears to be the oldest forged coins in history. A man named Paul found 300 forged silver coins and just because their knockoffs don’t mean their not worth something! These date back all the way to ancient greece and are quite good forgeries.With each coin be nearly 700 bucks, this collection is worth roughly the equivalent of 210,000 US dollars. However due to some new treasure hunting laws, they’re likely only going to be able to keep just 10 percent of this. The coins date back to 350 BC and show a greek soldier on horseback. They’re still made of raw silver but the quality of metal kind of give it’s a way that it’s a forgery. 3. The Hades Centipede Scientists found a rare species of centipede in Western Croatia in 2015. These were found 3600 feet below the surface of the earth in what’s known as the Velebit Mountain range. This certainly isn’t your average centipede and it has extremely powerful jaws, poison glands and it’s been given the nickname the Hades Centipede after the Greek god of the underworld. This is one of only a few creatures that will spend it’s entire life underground and has absolutely no need for sunlight to survive. The hades centipede is thought to be one of the top predators deep below the surface of the earth. 2. The Bosnian Pyramid One of the most mysterious discoveries in the Balkans is quite large and difficult to miss if you’re in the town of Visoko Bosnia. Many would assume it’s just a hill, but is it? Some think it’s much more than just that and this hill is actually man made and in the shape of a pyramid. If it was a pyramid, it would be twice the size of the great pyramid and they believe it would date back to 12,000 BC. The more and more they investigate this site, the more they begin to believe it was in fact man made. Many experts believe this is just a huge cruel hoax. But would something so controversial be well accepted by mainstream historians? We encourage you to do a little research for your own and take a look at it on google maps. 1.Varna Necropolis The Varna Necropolis is located in the country of Bulgaria and is considered to be the site where the first gold jewelry was ever found. This site dates back to 4600 to 4200 BC and was discovered in 1972. An astonishing total of 294 graves total were found, but the skeleton blinged out in the world’s oldest gold jewerly was the most significant discovery at the necropolis. 3,000 gold artifacts total were uncovered here and that weighed approximately 13.2 pounds total.

One of the top restaurants to eat it is at Petica Cevabzinica. It's minced meat kebab, served with bread and raw onions. Next we head to Buregdzinica to try some traditional pies, similar to Burek. We tried one with cheese, another with cheese and spinach and one with potatoes. To be really traditional try these pies with yogurt. We headed to 4 Sobe Gospode to try some Bosnian fusion cuisine accompanied by local wines. We tried a beef carpaccio, a mushroom risotto and a roasted lamb with house wine. Lastly we headed to Restaurant Dveri. They have a mix of European and Bosnian food. We eat a Hungarian goulash and a delicious steak. They have an extensive wine list from the Herzegovina region. Where is Bosnia? It sits on the Western shore of the Balkan Peninsula. Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, is today one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. More information about the video content bellow: 1. Medjugorje is located in the mountains near Mostar. The small town is incredibly popular with Catholic pilgrims. Millions of pilgrims have visited the site since 1981, when a small group of young people began reporting seeing visions of the Virgin Mary (Madonna di Medjugorje). 2. Bosnia has a currency that can’t be exchanged anywhere else in the world. The Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM) can’t be bought outside the country. So upon leaving exchange it or the only use will be as an expensive souvenir. 3.In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the three official languages are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. For the local population it is of great importance to appoint the language spoken. In practical terms, though, it is one and the same language. The differences are similar to the differences between American and British English. Before the war the language was called Serbo-Croatian, but that name is no longer used. 4. Stari Most Bridge (or Mostar Bridge) is a 16th century Ottoman bridge in the city of Mostar that crosses the river Neretva and connects two parts of the city. The Old Bridge stood for 427 years, but it was destroyed in 1993 during the Croat-Bosniak War. Later, the bridge was reconstructed and opened in 2004. Stari Most is a symbol of Mostar and part of UNESCO world heritage. 5. Unlike in Croatia and Serbia, there is not a single McDonald’s in Bosnia. In fact, there are no international fast food chains. However you have all kinds of independent local fast food vendors that serve local staples like Cevapi , Burek, Kukuruz or Kebabs. 6. Over the past 100 years Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia, has found itself a member of 6 different states and has witnessed the Sarajevo Assassination, the First and Second World Wars, the XIV Winter Olympic Games,and the longest-running siege of any town in modern history (1425 days). 7. For several hundred years, the borders of two great empires, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian, which represented the two poles of the world at that time – East and West, Islamic and Christian – met in Bosnia and Herzegovina.This made the country and its capital a crossroads for very different worlds. Eng/Serb/Nat The United Nations Sunday released pictures its says provide further evidence that Croatian troops committed atrocities after they recaptured Krajina. The UN interviewed Krajina Serbs who spoke of human rights violations against many of those who decided to stay after the Croat offensive. However, Croatian administrators have denied the charges. As Croatian President Franjo Tudjman triumphantly rode through the villages of Krajina this weekend, the United Nations released new pictures to back up its claims of human rights abuses in the region. Two weeks after the Croatian government claimed victory over the rebel Serbs in the area, Serb civilians claim they continue to be harassed. Many of those who didn't join the tens of thousands fleeing to the relative safety of Bosnia and Serbia are now seeing their homes burned to the ground. VOXPOP: (In Serbo-Croat) "Most of the villagers left to hide, but when we returned we couldn't find anyone who had stayed - we don't know if they were killed or burned." According to the UN, these Serb villagers believed the Croats when they ordered them to leave their homes and to register with the UN. When they returned, many of their homes had been torched and two elderly men were found murdered. This man was deaf, and stayed behind while his family went out. The UN believes Croats murdered him with a bullet to the head. However, Croatian administrators deny troops are abusing human rights in Krajina. SOUNDBITE: (In Serbo-Croat) "With regard to the repeated mentioning of arson, you must know that neither the Croatian state nor the Croatian military have any interest in destroying the property. You can rest assured that this is not a wide-scale phenomenon. Understandably, during the mopping up or war actions, some houses or villages were deliberately set on fire. You have to understand though that within our units are people whose houses were burnt, whose parents were killed so they burnt a house or two thinking this would relieve their anguish. But this was immediately stopped. You can verify that many villages in the Knin region are preserved and therefore there is no arson on the houses." SUPER CAPTION: General Cermak - Military Governor Krajina But United Nations officials monitoring the area have seen the aftermath of the alleged human rights abuses. SOUNDBITE: "We witnessed the bodies, two people had been shot through the head. Another person - both had been elderly men - had his throat slashed."
