Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. The site was formerly an outer barrier island, but became partially connected to the mainland by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the opening of MCU Park stadium and has become home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team, as well as the opening of a new amusement park among several adjacent ones.
Coney Island is the westernmost part of the barrier islands of Long Island, and is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 0.5 miles (0.80 km) wide. It was formerly an island that was separated from the main part of Brooklyn by Coney Island Creek, a partial tidal mudflats, but it has since been developed into a peninsula. There were plans early in the 20th century to dredge and straighten the creek as a ship canal, but they were abandoned, and the center of the creek was filled in completely to allow construction of the Belt Parkway before World War II, and it was filled in again in 1962 with the construction of the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge. The western and eastern ends of the island are now peninsulas.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.

Probably one of the finest in my collection, I really wanted to share this for others to see. I do not claim copyright on this piece. Coney Island is the story of a tiny spit of land at the foot of Brooklyn that at the turn of the century became the most extravagant playground in the country. In scale, in variety, in sheer inventiveness, Coney Island was unlike anything anyone had ever seen, and sooner or later everyone came to see it. "Coney," one man said in 1904, "is the most bewilderingly up-to-date place of amusement in the world." Coney Island is a lively and absorbing portrait of the extraordinary amusement empire that astonished, delighted and shocked the nation -- and took Americans from the Victorian age into the modern world.

Just south of Manhattan, on Long Island, Brooklyn is the most populous of New York City's five boroughs. On the southern outskirts of Brooklyn, just down the boardwalk from Coney Island, the peaceful ocean waves once drew waves of immigrants from a tumultuous past. Refugees from the former Soviet Union. After the Cold War ended in the '90s, an influx of Russians settled on the shores of the city. Brighton Beach, nicknamed Little Odessa after the Ukrainian city on the Black Sea, boasts the largest Russian-speaking population in the United States. Here, you may feel you need a translator, or a tour guide, like Dave Garbarskiy. (I was born and raised in the slums of every city)
[Hook: x2]
(I was born and raised in the slums...)
Coney Island, Coney Island
(... of every city)
It ain't gon get more hood or get more slum
Than 23rd and Mermaid, that's where I'm from
And even though the beach and board walk is fun
Come seven blocks past Nathan's, you're done
Neptune and Surf, murder made the worst
Niggas came in Benzes, left in a hearse
And if they spare your life, your jewels and your cash
You're dispersed, biz know CI niggas thirst
You prolly think it's all beach and amusement park
You would be a fool to peruse after dark
You will see the tool comin through Kaiser Park
Cause late night niggas dig graves, and it's comp then
Blazin is nothin, niggas came through beefin
Got clapped and left at the precint
Now I ain't sayin it is right or is decent
But what it is is real and that's why I speak it
[Hook x4]
Nigga, I'm a native New Yorker
Coney Isle made me the greatest of authors
The greatest shit talkers
The beachcombin, boardwalkin stalkers
Y'all niggas gased by The Warriors
Well, it ain't no Cyrus here
Niggas do crimes, it ain't no sirens there
Niggas do time and don't nobody care
How we gon cry, that's a no sign affair, nobody tears
We heartless, nigga, raised in the pits
Where you will catch charges before you catch with a mitt
Where you catch bodies or react from a hit
And catch the nigga who did it and clap at his wis'
Niggas more prone to get clapped from a chick
Than get a good job and look after his kids
I know it's foul but reality is
That I'm from Coney Isle and that's what it is
[Hook x4]
They say it's all good in the hood - nah, misconception
Niggas in the hood suffer from a misdirection
They care more how a nigga rims reflectin
Than care about who gon win the election
If QU is hectic, then CI on some next shit
Prodigy and Hav got the message
The kids is reckless, projects, homes infested
And no, can't shit correct it
