Venture to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, to explore the city that’s shaped like a bird in flight.
Boasting innovative architecture, imaginative artwork, and symmetrical designs, Brasilia is the ultimate eye candy. Begin your travels at the Praca dos Tres Poderes, the plaza that the city revolves around. Here you can marvel at Planalto Palace’s magnificent design—the work of famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. Abstract structures and odd-shaped buildings lay scattered around the parallel-running avenues at the Monumental Axis.
Discover the intricate construction of the Ministry of Justice and Itamaraty Palace, which is the headquarters for the Ministry of External Relations. The National Congress features a structure that looks like a bowl, while the National Museum sits inside a dome-shaped building with a unique walkway that looks like it’s orbiting the construction. For a truly marvelous sight, saunter into the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral. Perhaps Niemeyer’s most noteworthy masterpiece, it earned him the highest architectural award. The cathedral boasts 16 massive pillars that arch to the sky—forming a crown-like shape—alongside a peculiar bell tower. Inside the place of worship, you’ll find three angels hanging from the ceiling, surrounded by stained-glass windows.
After adoring the architecture, take a stroll through the Sanctuary of Dom Bosco, which is dedicated to Bosco, an Italian saint. It is said that he predicted the rise of a “futuristic city,” and the Brazilians believe he was referring to Brasilia.

In the 1950s, those who designed and built the man-made capital of Brasilia had dreamed of a city capable of offering a better life to its people. What remains of these ideals? Built for 500,000 inhabitants, it is now home to three million. Brasilia is bursting at the seams and is now the capital of a country shaken by social change and a deep crisis of confidence in its political class.
Built in just a thousand days, Brasilia was the brainchild of President Juscelino Kubitschek. The city was supposed to attract economic development to the centre of the country, far from the coastal cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
But more than that, Brasilia represented a new social order, a socialist political project based on egalitarian ideas. A utopia which would give access to housing, job creation, a good standard of living and social integration. The towering monuments of architect Oscar Niemeyer have divided opinion. Brasilia gives a whole new meaning to modernity.
Today, the capital is growing three times faster than any other city in Brazil. It was originally designed for 500,000 people. By 2030 the population is expected to reach 5.6 million, 15 times more than that originally envisaged by urban planner Lucio Costa. What remains today of the values and egalitarian vision of its builders?

"Brasilia: A Capital of Hope" is a short documentary film about Brasilia, Brazil created by four students (Jonathan Curth, Hilary Hershner, Abbey Ockinga, and Kelly Overstreet) in Dr. Bonnie Johnson's History and Theory of Planning class at the University of Kansas in the fall of 2013.

Brasília
Brasília (Portuguese pronunciation: [bɾaˈziljɐ]) is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located atop the Brazilian highlands in the country's center-western region. It was founded on April 21, 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília and its metro (encompassing the whole of the Federal District) had a population of 2,556,149 in 2011, making it the 4th most populous city in Brazil. Among major Latin American cities, Brasília has the highest GDP per capita at R$61,915 (US$36,175).
Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 in order to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning.

"Brasilia: A Capital of Hope" is a short documentary film about Brasilia, Brazil created by four students (Jonathan Curth, Hilary Hershner, Abbey Ockinga, and Kelly Overstreet) in Dr. Bonnie Johnson's History and Theory of Planning class at the University of Kansas in the fall of 2013. Begin your travels at the Praca dos Tres Poderes, the plaza that the city revolves around. Here you can marvel at Planalto Palace’s magnificent design—the work of famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. Abstract structures and odd-shaped buildings lay scattered around the parallel-running avenues at the Monumental Axis.
Discover the intricate construction of the Ministry of Justice and Itamaraty Palace, which is the headquarters for the Ministry of External Relations. The National Congress features a structure that looks like a bowl, while the National Museum sits inside a dome-shaped building with a unique walkway that looks like it’s orbiting the construction. For a truly marvelous sight, saunter into the nearby Metropolitan Cathedral. Perhaps Niemeyer’s most noteworthy masterpiece, it earned him the highest architectural award. The cathedral boasts 16 massive pillars that arch to the sky—forming a crown-like shape—alongside a peculiar bell tower. Inside the place of worship, you’ll find three angels hanging from the ceiling, surrounded by stained-glass windows.
After adoring the architecture, take a stroll through the Sanctuary of Dom Bosco, which is dedicated to Bosco, an Italian saint. It is said that he predicted the rise of a “futuristic city,” and the Brazilians believe he was referring to Brasilia.

Today, the capital is growing three times faster than any other city in Brazil. It was originally designed for 500,000 people. By 2030 the population is expected to reach 5.6 million, 15 times more than that originally envisaged by urban planner Lucio Costa. What remains today of the values and egalitarian vision of its builders?

"Brasilia: A Capital of Hope" is a short documentary film about Brasilia, Brazil created by four students (Jonathan Curth, Hilary Hershner, Abbey Ockinga, and Kelly Overstreet) in Dr. Bonnie Johnson's History and Theory of Planning class at the University of Kansas in the fall of 2013.

The Brasilia Cathedral, also known as the "Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida", is a grandiose Roman Catholic cathedral which has been serving as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília since it was first dedicated on May 31, 1970. Brasilia Cathedral was built by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and was the first ever monument to have been built in Brasilia. Joaquim Cardozo was the prime engineer of Brasilia Cathedral project. The Brasilia Cathedral, also known as the "Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida", is a grandiose Roman Catholic cathedral which has been serving as the seat of the Archdiocese of Brasília since it was first dedicated on May 31, 1970. Brasilia Cathedral was built by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and was the first ever monument to have been built in Brasilia. Joaquim Cardozo was the prime engineer of Brasilia Cathedral project. Whilst the cornerstone was laid on September 12, 1958, Brasilia Cathedral reached its first phase of completion on April 21, 1960, and Brasilia Cathedral was opened to public on May 31st, 1970.

The focal point of today’s Rio is the monumental glass cone of the Catedral Metropolitana that measures eighty metres high and looks like a Mexican pyramid. The Rua Do Ouvidor, with its elegant old buildings and splendid shops, is a reminder of the city’s historical and commercial importance. Portuguese settlers founded the city and sugar cane and gold made Rio’s colonial rulers extremely rich. In former times the coastal towns were protected by fortresses and canons. Paraty was one of those romantic locations, south of Rio on the Costa Verde, a gem dating back to Brazil’s colonial times. Around five hundred kilometres north of Rio and deep within the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, is a most remarkable place. Ouro Preto was discovered at the end of the seventeenth century by Portuguese gold prospectors who discovered ‘black gold’ that changed colour due to its iron content. São Paulo is one of the mega cities of the twenty first century and with a population of twenty million it is the economic heart of Brazil. The railway helped to transport cotton and later coffee, and its large station, with British-designed clock tower, became an important symbol. Brazil is synonymous with sunshine, samba and exotic nature, a dream destination full of both adventure and constant fun!
