This is the final known rehearsal recording of Joy Division. Recorded sometime in the spring of 1980, each of these songs may have been recorded at separate times. Notably, management never intended these rehearsals to be released. Fans for the longest time were lead to believe Joy Division barely completed "Ceremony" and "In a Lonely Place" before Ian died and New Order formed. Most of these takes were first introduced to the masses via Youtube user "birdandthe," who apparently did not have permissions to post the songs online. 1. Nascent lyrics, compared to the soundcheck and live versions at High Hall (May 2, 1980). The band most likely recorded this version sometime in April. The title "In a Lonely Place" comes from a poster Ian had, comprising numerous classic movies (that's also where we got "The Sound of Music," although Ian also happened to like the film). Another consideration was "Little Boy," which I believe New Order used on many early setlists for their gigs. The first two versions of "In a Lonely Place" sport significantly different lyrics than the famous versions, with varying vocal delivery. Fans often label the first one the "Misplaced" demo, as supposedly the tape bore that name (I can't remember if this has since been debunked or not). The snippets are just a few synth bits and drums, possibly from another full take of the song. Take 3 of the "final lyrics" version was the take used for the "Heart and Soul" boxset. On that release, the song cut after the second verse. At time, management lied and claimed it was all there was, but once the full song leaked, they retracted that claim and said it was cut for reasons of taste. Some sources also claim this take was recorded on May 14, just four days before Ian's suicide.
