A cathedral (French: cathédrale from Latin: cathedra, "seat" from the Greek kathedra (καθέδρα), seat, bench, from kata "down" + hedra seat, base, chair) is a Christian church which contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate. The counterpart term for such a church in German is Dom from Latin domus ecclesiae or domus episcopalis; also Italian Duomo, Dutch Domkerk and cognates in many other European languages. Churches with the function of "cathedral" are usually specific to those Christian denominations with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and some Lutheran and Methodist churches. Church buildings embodying the functions of a cathedral first appear in Italy, Gaul, Spain and North Africa in the 4th century, but cathedrals did not become universal within the Western Catholic Church until the 12th century, by which time they had developed architectural forms, institutional structures and legal identities distinct from parish churches, monastic churches and episcopal residences.

One of the most visited Malta attractions is St. John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. This impressive rich cathedral was built by the Knights of St John between 1573 and 1578. It was commissioned by Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere. In the old days, the cathedral used to be the most important church of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller of St John, also known as the Knights of Malta. It is believed that at one point, the cathedral served as a "showcase" to prove that the Catholic church was still strong and powerful. This was mainly during those times when the Catholic faith was being persecuted and in the eyes of the common people worldwide, the church was starting to get a bit too weak and disorientated. To this regard, the Knights of Malta took it upon themselves to create a massive ca...
This month we visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine located at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (between West 110th Street and 113th Street) in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood. 1892-1911, Heins & LaFarge. Work continued 1911-1942, Cram & Ferguson. When construction began in 1892, The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in the then-popular Byzantine-Romanesque style of architecture, was designed to rival St. Patrick's Cathedral on Fifth Avenue. But by 1909 the cathedral's plan was updated to the more fashionable Gothic style, and today, although officially "unfinished", the structure is considered to be one of the largest cathedrals in the world. A highlight of the holiday season at the Cathedral is the Annual Winter Solstice Celebration featuring music and dance. Known as a "Hou...

St John's Anglican Cathedral is a true example of 19th century Gothic-Revival architecture, designed in 1888 by John Loughborough Pearson. The first two stages, 1906 to 1910 and 1964 to 1968, have created a superb gothic interior with a forest of elegant sandstone columns and arches supporting the only stone vaulted ceiling in Australia. The history of the building project is captured in a detailed historical display. Visitors can see stone carved by local stonemasons. Once inside the cathedral, with space to seat 1000 people, the visitor can see many examples of superb creative arts. Examples of exquisite woodcarvings include the Choir stalls and Archbishop's seat, intricately carved in Queensland Silkwood and Maple. More than 400 needlework cushions, designed by students of the Queensl...
