Big job cuts have been announced at France's third-placed mobile phone operator Bouygues Telecom.
It plans to lay off 1,516 workers and is apparently no longer looking for a buyer for the company.
Announcing it will slash 17 percent of the staff in a bid to reduce costs,Bouygues Telecom's boss Olivier Roussat said it had halted takeover talks with the low-cost company Iliad and France's biggest phone service producer Orange.

French low-cost telecoms operator Iliad has reportedly offered four to five billion euros for rival Bouygues Telecom.
Iliad's boss, Xavier Niel, is trying to capitalise on the price war he sparked by launched a mobile phone service 18 months ago.

Citing people familiar with the matter, a Bloomberg report said French low-cost telecom operator Iliad SA is gearing up to bid for a "significantly larger" stake in T-Mobile US Incorporated than it previously sought for in July. The Bloomberg report said on Thursday Iliad, which had initially proposed buying a 56.6 percent stake in Deutsche Telekom AG's U.S. unit, is still prepared to offer about $33 for each T-Mobile share. The report cited two people as saying that executives at Deutsche Telekom, which owns 66 percent of the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, feel that a minimum of $35 per share would be a fairer price for T-Mobile.

French telecoms company Iliad has made a surprise offer for T-Mobile US Inc, setting up a potential bidding war with rival suitor Sprint Corp , the U.S. mobile firm now controlled by Japan's Softbank.
Iliad, which has shaken up the French mobile and broadband market in the past decade with its cheap, pared-down subscriber plans, has bid $15 billion in cash for 56.6 percent of T-Mobile US at $33 per share.
It said it valued the rest of T-Mobile, the fourth-largest U.S. carrier and 66.67 percent-owned by Deutsche Telekom , at $40.50 per share, and expects $10 billion of cost savings from the deal.
The move is the latest in founder Xavier Niel's audacious empire building in telecoms which now includes businesses in Israel, Monaco and France and in many ways makes him a similar figure to Masayoshi Son, the head of Softbank and now his rival suitor for T-Mobile US.

France Telecom's revenues and operating profits deteriorated last year but not more than was expected.

Iliad S.A. is a French provider of telecommunication services. It is based in Paris and its operations comprise fixed and mobile telephony services, prepaid phone cards and internet access providing and hosting services. The company was founded by Xavier Niel in 1990.
History
Free Mobile, a subsidiary of Iliad, was launched in 2012. As of December 2013, it was France's fourth largest mobile operator, having gained a 12% share of the market.
On August 1, 2014, Iliad SA publicly announced a bid to acquire a 56% stake in the United States wireless carrier T-Mobile US for US$16 billion. The bid came amidst reports that competing carrier Sprint Corporation, owned by Japanese firm Softbank, was planning its own US$24 billion merger.
As of the end of 2012, the company was active in over 35 countries.

The report cited two people as saying that executives at Deutsche Telekom, which owns 66 percent of the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, feel that a minimum of $35 per share would be a fairer price for T-Mobile.
