Stop Child Labour signs gold chain agreement with government, companies and CSOs

Edward Huizing, executive director of Hivos, which coordinates the Stop Child Labour coalition, signed the International Responsible Business Conduct (IRBC) Agreement for a responsible gold value chain on June 19, together with Philips, Fairphone, IUCN NL, FNV and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Hivos’ response to US withdrawal from Paris Agreement

Hivos strongly condemns Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. It shows the Trump Administration is in total discord with reality and isolates itself from the rest of the world. And although Trump believes otherwise, the first to suffer from this action is the American people as it is totally contrary to their best interests: their health, security, food supply, jobs and future.

Diversified Diets a Must for Zambia

There is a need to promote the consumption of a variety of foods in Zambia, according to Frank Mechielsen, Hivos’ Senior Sustainable Diets for All Programme Manager. In Zambia, many people cannot access healthy and diverse foods. To complicate matters, the Zambian government has traditionally concentrated on promoting the cultivation of maize at the expense of other crops.

Poisonous frogs are one of the planet’s most brightly colored animals. Depending on the species, they can be yellow, copper, gold, red, blue, green, black or a combination of those colors. More than enough choice for the designers of the new Rainforest Alliance seal, although a red frog might be the obvious choice as a tribute to the colour of UTZ’s original logo.

Ethiopia projected as the fastest growing economy in Africa but lacks a minimum wage

The World Bank on June 7, 2017 projected Ethiopia as the fastest growing economy in Africa. In a report, Global Economic Prospects: Sub-Saharan Africa, the bank predicted Ethiopia to be at 8.3 per cent followed by Ghana and Tanzania at 7.2 and 7.8 respectively.
