South Sudan (i/ˌsaʊθ suˈdɑːn, -ˈdæn/), officially the Republic of South Sudan, is a landlocked country in northeastern Africa that gained its independence from Sudan in 2011. Its current capital is Juba, which is also its largest city. It is planned that the capital city will be changed to the more centrally located Ramciel in the future. South Sudan is bordered by Sudan to the north, Ethiopia to the east, Kenya to the southeast, Uganda to the south, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southwest, and the Central African Republic to the west. It includes the vast swamp region of the Sudd, formed by the White Nile and known locally as the Bahr al Jabal.
The territories of modern South Sudan and the Republic of the Sudan were occupied by Egypt under the Muhammad Ali Dynasty, and later governed as an Anglo-Egyptian condominium until Sudanese independence was achieved in 1956. Following the First Sudanese Civil War, the Southern Sudan Autonomous Region was formed in 1972 and lasted until 1983. A second Sudanese civil war soon developed and ended with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement of 2005. Later that year, southern autonomy was restored when an Autonomous Government of Southern Sudan was formed.

JUBA At least 272 people have died in fighting between South Sudan's rival factions in the capital Juba, including 33 civilians, a government source said on Sunday, as heavy gunfire erupted again in the city and many residents sought shelter at a U.N. base. The fighting first broke out on Thursday and Friday between troops loyal to President Salva Kiir and soldiers who support vice president Riek Machar. The violence raises fears South Sudan could slide back into conflict after emerging from a two-year civil war, which began in December 2013 after Kiir sacked Machar as vice president. ►Circle us on Google + http://goo.gl/TXeBfX ►Subscribe Channel http://goo.gl/mqt0wI ►Don't forget to Like * Comment * Share this video. ----------------------------------------------------------------------...

Bishop Dr. Isaiah Majok Dau of the Pentecostal Church's prayer during South Sudan national prayers day. “I hear people say God has cursed South Sudan. I am afraid, I disagree. We are not cursed. We are blessed, but we are sinners. That is why we hate ourselves, that is why we kill ourselves, that is why we backbite ourselves. So we are the problem. But we have been given opportunity to be forgiven, to be enriched and to be healed. Our opportunity is if we humble ourselves. We should consider others better than us by not despising other people. That means we do not think other tribes are less human than us because we are from a particular tribe. I don’t care what office you hold, you are a human-being. And we accept that we can be wrong –that is humility. Humility is not keeping quiet, but ...

South Sudan has what many business people describe as a "war economy"; people there are struggling to keep their companies afloat as a result of the brutal conflict which broke out between government and rebel forces in December 2013. Even if the recent peace deal holds, it will take some time for the economy to recover. Despite the challenges of civil war there are entrepreneurs and businesses with big hopes. But they have to deal with the lack of dollars in the country, and that has been driving up prices every day. Catherine Byaruhanga reports from Juba.

Donors to South Sudan's health sector have challenged the country's government to channel funds to the sector instead of spending all revenue on weapons. Speaking during a health summit in South Sudan's capital Juba, British and Canadian representatives to South Sudan said the country uses a huge portion of its annual budget on the military at the expense of vital sectors such as health and education. On its part, South Sudan said it is facing financial problems but it is committed to increasing health care funding as the situation in the country improves.

Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state. In February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia ...
The nightmare civil war in South Sudan, explained Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Widespread ethnic cleansing, burning villages, looming starvation, and gang rape “so prevalent that it’s become ‘normal.’” This is what UN experts found when they took a 10-day trip to the African country of South Sudan in late November. Now they’re sounding the alarm, warning that South Sudan, the world’s newest country, is “on the brink of catastrophe” that could rival the horrors of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. In that conflict, some 800,000 people were slaughtered in the span of just 100 days while the international community watched, unable or unwilling to stop the bloodshed. Former President Bill Clinton has called his decision not to intervene one of the biggest regrets of his presidenc...

The conflict has led to a man-made famine, accusations of mass rape and ethnic cleansing, and a massive refugee crisis. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Simona Foltyn went to South Sudan to report on the growing humanitarian crisis.

More than 100,000 people have been displaced from the usually calm county of Kajo Keji in South Sudan. The area is now militarised and split between government troops and rebel fighters. The government has been fighting the rebels since 2013 when the ethnic war first started, two years into the country's independence from Sudan. Al Jazeera has gained exclusive access to a territory controlled by the rebels within Kajo Keji, as Catherine Soi reports. - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/
It has been six years since South Sudan became an independent country but there is little to celebrate. A four year civil war has taken a heavy toll on the population, with more than a million children forced from their homes. And the trauma of conflict is having a deep psychological impact on the country's youngest citizens. Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News The war in South Sudan began in murky circumstances in mid-December, when tribal factions within the country's army, the SPLA, began fighting each other in the center of the capital, Juba. The SPLA quickly fractured into two camps: an insurgency drawn from members of former vice president Riek Machar's Nuer tribe and troops who remained loyal to President Salva Kiir, of the Dinka tribe. Both sides have been accused of committing gross human rights abuses during the conflict. VICE News arrived in Juba and found the army desperate to dispel rumors that rebels were advancing on the capital. Soldiers were keen to take our correspondents on a trip with them into the bush to recapture the strategic city of Bor from the rebels... ...
