The Afrika Korps or German Africa Corps (German: Deutsches Afrikakorps, DAK listen ) was the German expeditionary force in Africa during the North African Campaign of World War II. First sent as a holding force to shore up the Italian defense of their African colonies, the formation fought on in Africa, under various appellations, from March 1941 until its surrender in May 1943. The term "Afrika Korps" is actually pseudo-German (so-called "cod-German"), deriving from an incomplete German title, which was in any case written as a single word. The German term referred solely to the initial formation, the Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK), which formed part of the Axis command of the German and Italian forces in North Africa. However, the name stuck, with both news media and Allied soldiers, as the name for all subsequent German units in North Africa. The reputation of the Afrika Korps is closely associated with that of its original commander, Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel.
The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government. The stated mission of the Peace Corps includes providing technical assistance, helping people outside the United States to understand American culture, and helping Americans to understand the cultures of other countries. The work is generally related to social and economic development. Each program participant, a Peace Corps Volunteer, is an American citizen, typically with a college degree, who works abroad for a period of two years after three months of training.
Volunteers work with governments, schools, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and entrepreneurs in education, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment. After 24 months of service, volunteers can request an extension of service.
The program was established by Executive Order 10924, issued by President John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961, announced by televised broadcast March 2, 1961, and authorized by Congress on September 21, 1961, with passage of the Peace Corps Act (Pub.L. 87–293). The act declares the program's purpose as follows:
Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most-populous continent. At about 30.2 million km2 (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers six percent of Earth's total surface area and 20.4 percent of its total land area. With 1.1 billion people as of 2013, it accounts for about 15% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagos. It contains 54 fully recognized sovereign states (countries), nine territories and two de facto independent states with limited or no recognition.
Africa's population is the youngest amongst all the continents; the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4.Algeria is Africa's largest country by area, and Nigeria by population. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely accepted as the place of origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago, including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones.
Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944), popularly known as the Desert Fox, was a German field marshal (German: Generalfeldmarschall) of World War II. He earned the respect of both his own troops and his enemies.
Rommel was a highly decorated officer in World War I and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his exploits on the Italian Front. In World War II, he further distinguished himself as the commander of the 7th Panzer Division during the 1940 invasion of France. His leadership of German and Italian forces in the North African campaign established him as one of the most able commanders of the war, and earned him the appellation of the Desert Fox. He is regarded as one of the most skilled commanders of desert warfare in the conflict. He later commanded the German forces opposing the Allied cross-channel invasion of Normandy.
Rommel is regarded as having been a humane and professional officer. His Afrika Korps was never accused of war crimes, and Allied soldiers captured during his Africa campaign were reported to have been treated humanely. Orders to kill Jewish soldiers, civilians and captured commandos were ignored. Later in the war, Rommel was indirectly linked to the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Because Rommel was a national hero, Hitler desired to eliminate him quietly. He forced Rommel to commit suicide with a cyanide pill, in return for assurances that Rommel's family would not be persecuted following his death. He was given a state funeral, and it was announced that Rommel had succumbed to his injuries from an earlier strafing of his staff car in Normandy.

First off, thanks to the honorable lady who suggested this song on our Twitter! The Afrikakorps was a german expeditionary force which was deployed to North Africa in order to aid the Italian forces in the North Africa Campaign. Notable by their commander, Field Marshal Rommel the Desert Fox, the Afrikakorps was feared among Allied troops, and resisted bravely until they were overran by Allied forces in 1943. Rommel supported the Reich, but criticized the brutal means employed in occupied land. He allegedly supported a murder attempt to Hitler, and was compelled to suicide in 1944.

Bradley, commanding II Corps, had originally planned to have Truscott's 3d Division relieve the battle-weary 1st ID. However, as Truscott was moving his division forward to effect that relief, Bradley contacted him on the night of the fifth and told him that General Harmon had requested additional infantry to support his division's attack on a strongly defended German position on the peninsula east of Bizerte, and directed that Truscott send an infantry regiment to the Ferryville area for attachment to the 1st AD. Bradley had also ordered that an infantry regiment from the 9th ID and additional field artillery and antiaircraft join Harmon'...
A behind the scenes look at the German Africa Corps (German: Deutsches Afrikakorps, DAK listen (help·info)), or just the Afrika Korps, was the German expeditionary force in Libya and Tunisia during the North African Campaign of World War II. The reputation of the Afrika Korps is synonymous with that of its first commander Erwin Rommel, who later commanded the [1] Panzer Army Africa which evolved into the German-Italian Panzer Army (Deutsch-Italienische Panzerarmee) and Army Group Africa, all of which Afrika Korps was a distinct and principal component. Throughout the North African campaign, the Afrika Korps fought against Allied forces until its surrender in May 1943. Romel threatened the access to oil and that was now the lifeblood of any military. Keeping the oil flowing meant defeati...

The Africa Corps (Savage Republic) debut album, a stunning release was released in 1982. This is a beautiful album to gaze at. 1000 individually numbered limited edition copies, all individually screen-printed on a very ‘heavy’ card sleeve. My copy is number 942 and the centre labels, as well as the front and rear of the sleeve have Arabic writing on them – I think other copies are all slightly different. This release also has rich musical textures within the grooves as well as the packaging and simply must be listened to. Text below courtesy of furious.com The album 'Tragic Figures' was originally recorded under the band name Africa Corps. After it was recorded and the sleeve had been printed, Drucker announced that he was unhappy with the connotations of the band name. Bruce; "...

26 May 1942 We are finally ready to strike at Tobruk again. The British have neglected the defenses of Tobruk and instead chose to massively fortify the Gazala Line. So my plan is to swing around the defenses at Bir Hacheim and go for Tobruk directly. ------------------------- Difficulty is set to Rommel and we are trying to do a (almost) blind run here. I will explain some advanced tactics and my thougths about different strategic approaches. For explanations on basics and game mechanic I recommend watching my playthrough of the Wehrmacht campaign. 7 July 1942 With the fall of Tobruk Operation Herkules finally has been authorised. We are to seize Malta and thereby take away another important British base of operations in the Mediterranean. With Malta in German hands supplies to Africa will be secure and we can support a further advance into Egypt. Great naval, airborne and amphibious forces have been assembled and are at my command. Intelligence indicates formidable defences and as always time is limited, but I am confident, that this will be a swift victory. 9 July 1942 The British defenders were well prepared and our landing forces suffered unexpectidely high losses in the first hours of the operation. To further complicate our situation a large British convoy of the Royal Navy is headed our way. My orders are not to let it escape...
