The Centre for Social Media Research is one of the world’s first centres to specialise in the study of social media. It is based in the Communications and Media Research Institute (CAMRI). In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), 52% of CAMRI's research was judged to be 'world-leading', with 87% of the total rated 'internationally excellent', making it one of Britain's leading institutions in media and communication research.

We understand ‘social media’ to mean online platforms for mediated many-to-many communication, collaboration and creativity.

The Centre for Social Media Research is dedicated to the study of social media in their social contexts, exploring their cultural, economic and political dimensions.

We are especially interested in:

  • creativity and participation in social media
  • the political economy of social media
  • social media industry, policy, and business models
  • social movements and activism using social media

We run a new MA in Social Media, have a number of PhD students in the CAMRI Doctoral Programme, and we have a growing team of expert researchers engaged with these topics.
