Ancient Rome was an Italic civilization that began on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 8th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea and centered on the city of Rome, it expanded to become one of the largest empires in the ancient world with an estimated 50 to 90 million inhabitants (roughly 20% of the world's population) and covering 6.5 million square kilometers (2.5 million sq mi) during its height between the first and second centuries AD.
In its approximately 12 centuries of existence, Roman civilization shifted from a monarchy to a classical republic and then to an increasingly autocratic empire. Through conquest and assimilation, it came to dominate Southern and Western Europe, Asia Minor, North Africa, and parts of Northern and Eastern Europe. Rome was preponderant throughout the Mediterranean region and was one of the most powerful entities of the ancient world. It is often grouped into classical antiquity together with ancient Greece, and their similar cultures and societies are known as the Greco-Roman world.

Carthage was Rome's equal, rival and almost her conqueror. In 146 BC Roman general Scipio destroyed the city of Carthage so painstakingly and utterly that not a single building was left standing. What did the Romans so fear about the Carthaginians that in the end they would be prompted to the most terrible acts of reprisal in the ancient world? A new archaeological dig by Dr Richard Miles of Cambridge University, penetrates the burned layer of this Roman holocaust and uncovers fresh evidence. Stylish, fast-moving and filmic, The Riddle of Pompeii finally solves one of the world's biggest archaeological mysteries. In AD 79 the legendary volcano Vesuvius erupted in one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of all time, destroying the town of Pompeii. For 400 years archaeologists have studied the ancient bodies found buried beneath layers of ash and rock. The explanation for the victims’ deaths has always been that they were killed by flying rocks and boiling lava. This is the interpretation still given to tourists who visit the site at Pompeii today. Yet an intriguing mystery lies at the centre of this explanation... The people of Pompeii had ample warning that the volcano was about to erupt, and yet they apparently stayed put, awaiting death in their hundreds. Why? The skeletons...

http://kaitlinsuggs.com Visit my Flickr page to see a selection of my photos from Rome: http://www.flickr.com/photos/94021134@N07/ I traveled to Rome over the summer with two main goals: visit ancient ruins and take as many photos and videos as humanly possible. With about 3,000 photos and 10 gigs of video footage under my belt, I like to think I accomplished the latter. So, this video represents the grand sum of all of that footage. Seeing as I spent a good portion of the trip behind a camera lens, I'd say this video is a pretty good representation of my experiences in Rome. There were always at least two impressive pieces of architecture and at least three well-dressed Italian men around every corner in Rome. The ancient ruins were especially impressive - so much so that I visited the...
A short video of our time in the Eternal City. We thought that it would be a busy and noisy city, but we were quite surprised at how peaceful it felt and it left us with beautiful memories such as walking through ancient ruins in the early morning, or watching the golden light fade over the terracotta rooftops. Rome far exceeded our expectations on many levels and truly stole our hearts. To see photos of the trip go to http://www.oftwolands.com Music : Paperchaser - Hometown Hero (licence through The Music Bed) Filmed on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, Edited in Final Cut Pro X and Graded with FilmConvert.

In April I spent the Easter weekend in Rome. It is a very impressive city, and the smell of the ancient roman empire is everywhere! The Vatican demonstrates its amazing power and wealth in a way which left me back with mixed feelings, given the current ignorance to rising problems within the catholic church. On the other hand, seeing the people at St. Peters square, the priests and the nuns from around the world who have gathered to celebrate Easter somehow reconciled me - these people showed spirit and warmth. Hence, my choice of music somewhat reflects these feelings. Music from Hans Zimmer, "Roll Tide Hymn" Shot with Lumix GH1, kitlens, 1080p24, smooth film mode (all on -2) and DIY slider. This is pre- hack footage. Have fun!
A longer version is available on YouTube at: http://www.vimeo.com/15808133. Rome Reborn is an international initiative to use 3D digital technology to illustrate the urban development of the ancient city from the first settlements in the late Bronze Age (ca. 1000 BCE) to the depopulation of the city in the early Middle Ages (ca. 552 CE). Thus far, the Rome Reborn team has concentrated on modeling the city as it might have appeared in 320 CE when it reached the peak of its development with a population estimated to be ca. 1 million people occupying ca. 25 sq. km. of space inside the late-antique walls and using ca. 7,000 buildings. An interactive earlier version of this model, called Rome Reborn 1.0 (9 million polygons) has been available at no cost since 2008 in the Gallery of Google Ea...

In ancient Roman religion, the genius was the individual instance of a general divine nature that is present in every individual person, place, or thing.
As we experience the wonder of the ruins, Hollywood gave us many interpretations of what it looked and sounded like.
