1996 (MCMXCVI) was a leap year starting on Monday (dominical letter GF) of the Gregorian calendar, the 1996th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 996th year of the 2nd millennium, the 96th year of the 20th century, and the 7th year of the 1990s decade.
1996 was designated as:
Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) is a summer open-air heavy metal music festival. It takes place annually in the small village of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. With 80,000 festival visitors, and including personnel a total of roughly 86,000 attendees in 2011, it attracts various kinds of metal music fans.
The festival was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. W:O:A is usually held at the beginning of August and lasts three days.
Wacken Open Air 1990, the first incarnation of the festival, was held on Friday, 24 August and Saturday, 25 August.
Wacken Open Air 1991 was held on Friday, 23 August and Saturday, 24 August.
Wacken Open Air 1992 was held on Friday, 21 August and Saturday, 22 August.
Wacken Open Air 1993 was held from Friday, 20 August to Sunday, 22 August, and was headlined by Doro and Fates Warning.
Wacken Open Air 1994 was held on Friday, 19 August and Saturday, 20 August, and was headlined by Paul Di'Anno's Killers.
Open Air was BBC1's flagship programme for their new daytime service which began on 27 October 1986. In 1987 an additional early morning episode was added, following the end of Breakfast Time, to help promote and inform viewers what topics would be covered in the main edition.
Open Air had similarities to Channel 4's programme Right to Reply, as it discussed all aspects of television and also tried to answer any questions which viewers had. Unlike Right to Reply, Open Air was transmitted live each weekday and had live phone-ins. The series covered all television channels and would often have programme makers and television management explaining their actions. It ended in 1990, after 4 series.
Westside Connection was an American West Coast hip hop and gangsta rap supergroup formed by Ice Cube, WC and Mack 10. The group's debut album, Bow Down, reached the number 2 position on the Billboard 200 in 1996, going platinum that year.
Westside Connection began performing together in 1994, appearing on Mack 10's self-titled debut album, Mack 10, on the song "Westside Slaughterhouse". A few months later, the group again joined forces, this time appearing on WC's album, Curb Servin', on the song "West Up!". Around this time the group began working on their debut album, Bow Down, which was released October 22, 1996.
Individually, Ice Cube, WC and Mack 10 continued working on solo projects in between group albums. Together, as Westside Connection, they produced several songs released on film soundtracks and compilations including "Bangin'" (from West Coast Bad Boyz II), "Let It Reign" (from Thicker than Water) and "It's the Holidaze" (from Friday After Next).
On December 9, 2003 the group released their second album Terrorist Threats, hallmarked by the lead single "Gangsta Nation" produced by Fredwreck and featuring Nate Dogg.
Dennis Coles (born May 9, 1970), better known by his stage name Ghostface Killah, is an American rapper and prominent member of the Wu-Tang Clan. After the group achieved breakthrough success in the aftermath of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), the members went on to pursue solo careers to varying levels of success. Ghostface Killah debuted his solo-career with Ironman in 1996, which was well received by music critics. He has continued his success over the following years with critically acclaimed albums such as Supreme Clientele (2000) and FishScale (2006). His stage name was taken from one of the characters in the 1979 kung fu film Mystery of Chessboxing. He is the founder of his own label Starks Enterprises.
Ghostface Killah is critically acclaimed for his loud, fast-paced flow, and his emotional stream-of-consciousness narratives containing cryptic slang and non-sequiturs. In 2006, MTV included him on their honorable mention list of The Greatest MCs of All Time, while the editors of About.com placed him on their list of the Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987–2007), calling him "one of the most imaginative storytellers of our time."Q magazine called him "rap's finest storyteller."Pitchfork Media stated that, "Ghostface has unparalleled storytelling instincts; he might be the best, most colorful storyteller rap has ever seen."NPR called him "a compulsive storyteller", and asserted, "His fiction is painterly."

NEWCASTLE UNITED 5-0 MANCHESTER UNITED (1996/97) 20th October, 1996 Newcastle United took revenge on the team which pipped them to the title the previous season in style. Darren Peacock headed the opener before David Ginola's sensational curling effort made it 2-0. Les Ferdinand headed in off the bar, Alan Shearer nipped in to slam home a loose ball before Philippe Albert put the icing on the cake with a wonderful chip which left Peter Schmeichel stranded. It capped an extraordinary Sunday which is now part of Geordie folklore.
Sandra Cisneros, the author of The House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories, is a poet and fiction writer. I’m determined to fill a literary void." Ms. Cisneros, who received a Lannan Literary Award for Fiction, read the story "Eleven" and from work in progress on October 8, 1996. Ms. Cisernos was interviewed by poet, novelist, and essayist Dorothy Allison, whose books include Cavedweller and Bastard out of Carolina.
I have always loved Stan Brakhage's hand painted films. This piece indirectly (and barely) nibbles @ the edges of those works. I have used (w/o permission) an interview with Stan Brakhage (originally shot by Colin Still in October 1996)... and god knows Mr. Brakhage would not approve ∞ maybe
Located in Connecticut, Norwich State Hospital, originally Norwich State Hospital For The Insane, became an active campus in October 1904. Consisting of only a single building, housing 94 patients, on a mere one hundred acres of land, it was initially created as a mental health facility for the mentally ill and those found guilty of crimes by insanity. Just short of one hundred years, this hospital, surrounded by forest, sitting on the banks of the Thames River, at it’s peak, grew into a giant, expanding the campus to over thirty buildings, nine hundred acres and housing 3,186 patients. Now, Norwich wasn’t only for the mentally ill or the criminally insane, it was also providing treatment for geriatric patients, chemically dependent patients and, from 1931 to 1939, Tubercular patients. Marie, a French-speaking Montrealer in her thirties played by actress Paule Ducharme, appears to be lost in reverie. You may try to get her attention: when selecting "Excuse me..." on the display, Marie suddenly stares at you; then, selecting "Do you have the time?", "Are you staring at me?" or simply "May I ask you something?" starts a conversation that will develop according to visitor's curiosity or Marie's moods. The encounter may be cut short due to a lack of tact or interest, or it may develop into intimate considerations about love in the context of a virtual relationship. The conversation...
