The Philippine army says it has so far killed more than 30 Islamic State-linked extremists as fighting continues for a third day in the southern island of Mindanao.
The island has been under martial law since Tuesday and thousands of the residents in a besieged city have been evacuated.
Ro Aram reports.
The fighting started Tuesday when the Philippine army tried to raid the house of Isnilon Hapilon, leader of the extremist group Abu Sayyaf.
However, the troops' failed attempt to capture Hapilon, who is on the FBI’s most wanted list, set off a violent backlash as a militant group known as the Maute started firing back.
The chaos prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the country's second-largest island, and he is now considering expanding it nationwide.
Helicopters and special forces were mobilized to flush out extremist rebels in the besieged city of Marawi, where both the Maute and followers of Hapilon burned down several buildings and took churchgoers hostage to be used as human shields.
Both groups have pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State, which claimed responsibility late on Wednesday for Maute’s activities via its Amaq news agency.
The White House condemned the Maute group as “cowardly terrorists” and said the United States was a proud ally of the Philippines and backed its fight against extremism.
Military leaders say about 15 security forces and just over 30 militants have died so far in the urban fighting, which has prompted most of the 200-thousand Marawi residents to flee the city.
Meanwhile, due to the on-going conflict, Seoul's foreign ministry has issued a travel warning to Mindanao....
urging Koreans to reschedule or cancel any planned trips to the region.

Armored Cadillac Gage V-150 Philippines, which circulated on Twitter, indicating that the vehicle was sealed with wood of an ammunition trunk. The wooden shield is expected to protect it from man-made anti-tank weapons.
RPG and other anti-tank weapons use high explosive anti-tank technology (HEAT) also known as shaped charges. This technology was first shown by Charles Munroe, a professor at the American Naval Academy in 1888.
The conical cavity is placed on a metal plate, or a protective tank, and an explosive loaded behind it. The cavity channeled the force of the explosion through the cone to the end. This allows the warhead to penetrate the armor up to seven times the charge diameter.
The result is a rocket launcher like RPG-2 can penetrate more than 180 millimeters of steel. This is more than enough to penetrate armor of the V-150 armored car, which is only designed to stop bullets with a diameter of 7.62 millimeters or smaller.

So this is actually the function of an iron enclosure installed in a common armored vehicle we see. Actually no matter the cage is made of anything important material is hard enough to trigger contact fuze.
If the cage is not available, wood with a thick layer will help. At least a wooden armor of one foot thick or about 30 cm can do the trick to expel a liquid jet that pierces the armor.

Angeles, Philippines
Angeles (Kapampangan: Lakanbalen ning Angeles; Tagalog: Lungsod ng Angeles) is a highly urbanized city located geographically within the province of Pampanga in the Philippines. It is bordered by Mabalacat to the north; Mexico to the east; San Fernando to the southeast; Bacolor to the south; and Porac to the southwest and west. The city administers itself autonomously from Pampanga and, as of the 2010 census, it has a population of 326,336.
Angeles is served by the Clark International Airport in the Clark Freeport Zone. As the former home of Clark Air Base (then the largest United States military facility outside of the continental United States), it was significantly affected by the pullout brought about by the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. The economy of Angeles was heavily dependent on the American base at that time. The city is also infamous for its red-light district centered on Fields Avenue.
In 1993, a full cleanup and removal of volcanic ash deposits began and the former U.S. base re-emerged as Clark Special Economic Zone (CSEZ). The creation of CSEZ has helped to offset the loss of income and jobs previously generated by the presence of the U.S. base in the city. Today, Angeles and Clark form the hub for business, industry, aviation, and tourism in the Philippines as well as a leisure, fitness, entertainment and gaming center of Central Luzon.

Fields Avenue
Fields Avenue is the name of a major street running through Balibago area of Angeles in the Philippines. It is the center of the red light district of the biggest entertainment district of the Philippines. The name derives from the common military practice to name the roads around airfields "Field" Street or similar. Originally the name referred to the Clark Air Base and was "Clark Field Avenue". The name evolved to become Fields Avenue.

The Philippine army says it has so far killed more than 30 Islamic State-linked extremists as fighting continues for a third day in the southern island of Mindanao.

The fighting started Tuesday when the Philippine army tried to raid the house of Isnilon Hapilon, leader of the extremist group Abu Sayyaf.
However, the troops' failed attempt to capture Hapilon, who is on the FBI’s most wanted list, set off a violent backlash as a militant group known as the Maute started firing back.
The chaos prompted President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law in the country's second-largest island, and he is now considering expanding it nationwide.
Helicopters and special forces were mobilized to flush out extremist rebels in the besieged city of Marawi, where both the Maute and followers of Hapilon burned down several buildings and took churchgoers hostage to be used as human shields.
Both groups have pledged allegiance to the so-called Islamic State, which claimed responsibility late on Wednesday for Maute’s activities via its Amaq news agency.
The White House condemned the Maute group as “cowardly terrorists” and said the United States was a proud ally of the Philippines and backed its fight against extremism.
Military leaders say about 15 security forces and just over 30 militants have died so far in the urban fighting, which has prompted most of the 200-thousand Marawi residents to flee the city.
Meanwhile, due to the on-going conflict, Seoul's foreign ministry has issued a travel warning to Mindanao....
urging Koreans to reschedule or cancel any planned trips to the region.

Armored Cadillac Gage V-150 Philippines, which circulated on Twitter, indicating that the vehicle was sealed with wood of an ammunition trunk. The wooden shield is expected to protect it from man-made anti-tank weapons.
RPG and other anti-tank weapons use high explosive anti-tank technology (HEAT) also known as shaped charges. This technology was first shown by Charles Munroe, a professor at the American Naval Academy in 1888.
The conical cavity is placed on a metal plate, or a protective tank, and an explosive loaded behind it. The cavity channeled the force of the explosion through the cone to the end. This allows the warhead to penetrate the armor up to seven times the charge diameter.
The result is a rocket launcher like RPG-2 can penetrate more than 180 millimeters of steel. This is more than enough to penetrate armor of the V-150 armored car, which is only designed to stop bullets with a diameter of 7.62 millimeters or smaller.
As written in Popular Mechanics, Thursday, June 8, 2017, to be effective, wooden armor must do one of two things that is mounted away from the hull of the vehicle, or made very thick. In
The first case, 'wooden armor enclosure' will do the trick. This will cause RPG warheads to blow wood and burn the 'armor', but disappear before actually reaching the vehicle surface.
So this is actually the function of an iron enclosure installed in a common armored vehicle we see. Actually no matter the cage is made of anything important material is hard enough to trigger contact fuze.
If the cage is not available, wood with a thick layer will help. At least a wooden armor of one foot thick or about 30 cm can do the trick to expel a liquid jet that pierces the armor.
Of course, wooden armor is totally useless against the anti-tank round of kinetic energy. Modern armor explosive ammunition, which is basically a giant tungsten or uranium arrow fired at supersonic speed. This power will penetrate the wood like a hot knife cutting butter.
