Let's head to Yurakucho and the Godzilla statue, Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, the Meguro River at night, Odaiba and Ueno Park for some cherry blossom viewing.
Knowing the cherry blossoms (sakura) is to know Japan itself. Their beauty comes quickly and is short lived -- falling from the tree after only 10 days. The samurai lived knowing their life would be short, and that spirit is in each cherry blossom.
Called "mono no aware" which is deeply rooted in Buddhism, Japanese have a strong connection to all things. The beauty felt for the sakura is deep. Mono no aware is also an important factor in how Japanese connect to manga, anime and things important to them.
In this episode, John travels around Tokyo taking in the cherry blossoms spots, investigating hanami (cherry blossom viewing and picnicking) and talk with some hanami-goers. Why is there such a big celebration for the cherry blossoms in Japan?

Meguro
Meguro (目黒区, Meguro-ku) is a special ward in Tokyo, Japan. It calls itself Meguro City in English. The ward was founded on March 15, 1947.
Meguro is predominantly residential in character, but is also home to light industry, corporate head offices, the Komaba campus of University of Tokyo as well as fifteen foreign embassies and consulates. Residential neighborhoods include, Jiyugaoka, Kakinokizaka, and Nakameguro. As of May 1, 2015, the ward has an estimated population of 277,171 and a population density of 18,890 persons per km2. The total area is 14.67 km2.
History
The Higashiyama shell mound in the north of the ward contains remains from the paleolithic, Jōmon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods.
The area now known as Meguro was formerly two towns, Meguro proper and Hibusuma, all parts of the former Ebara District of Musashi Province. The two were merged into a Meguro ward for Tokyo City in 1932 and since then the ward has remained with no alterations to its territory.
The name "Meguro," meaning "black eyes", derives from the Meguro Fudō (Black-eyed Fudō-myōō) of Ryūsenji. The Meguro Fudō was one of five Fudō-myōō statues placed at strategic points on the outskirts of Edo in the early seventeenth century by the abbot Tenkai, an advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu, to provide protection for the new capital of the Tokugawa shogunate. Each statue had eyes of a different color. (Another Tokyo ward, Mejiro is named for the white-eyed Fudō-myōō).

Let's head to Yurakucho and the Godzilla statue, Shinjuku Gyoen National Park, the Meguro River at night, Odaiba and Ueno Park for some cherry blossom viewing.
Knowing the cherry blossoms (sakura) is to know Japan itself. Their beauty comes quickly and is short lived -- falling from the tree after only 10 days. The samurai lived knowing their life would be short, and that spirit is in each cherry blossom.
Called "mono no aware" which is deeply rooted in Buddhism, Japanese have a strong connection to all things. The beauty felt for the sakura is deep. Mono no aware is also an important factor in how Japanese connect to manga, anime and things important to them.
In this episode, John travels around Tokyo taking in the cherry blossoms spots, investigating hanami (cherry blossom viewing and picnicking) and talk with some hanami-goers. Why is there such a big celebration for the cherry blossoms in Japan?

Famously known for being one of the most amazing places to see cherry blossoms when they bloom in the spring in Japan, I was not disappointed. The cherry blossoms were amazing. Meguro is a curious place. Firstly, why would Meguro Station be located in Shinagawa Ward? And what’s with Kami-Meguro, Naka-Meguro, and Shimo-Meguro? Somehow “upper” sounds better than “lower” Meguro, and “middle” sounds blase ... Oh, so Meguro isn’t so curious. But wait, there’s Meguro Gajoen--the palatial complex said to have been the inspiration behind scenes in Hayao Miyazaki’s movie “Spirited Away,” by Studio Ghibli....
