A Malaysian airline pilot who repeatedly raped a woman at knifepoint in her Perth home 21 years ago has been jailed for 13 years.
Alfred Gerard Eravelly, 50, broke into the victim's Scarborough home in the early hours of March 9, 1996, by cutting the fly screen on her en suite bathroom window.
Wearing a stocking over his head, he tied her up with rope, blindfolded her and sexually assaulted her, leaving behind DNA that was later analysed and led to his arrest.
For the first time, details of the "international DNA hit" were revealed in the WA District Court on Thursday during Eravelly's sentencing.
The court was told how Eravelly had committed battery and voyeurism offences in Florida in the United States in the year 2000.
One of the offences involved him ejaculating in a woman's hair in a library at a university campus.
During that offence his DNA was left behind.
In 2014, WA detectives were able to match the DNA left at the scene of the Scarborough offence with the DNA from the Florida crime scene.
Eravelly, a father-of-two, was arrested moments after he arrived at Sydney Airport in February 2016 and was swiftly extradited to Perth.
He was charged with five counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent, burglary, deprivation of liberty and unlawful wounding.
He pleaded not guilty to all charges but a jury found him guilty on all counts following a six-day trial.
Eravelly lived less than 2 kilometres away from the woman at the time of the offences, when he was a cash-strapped aviation student.
He later returned to Malaysia where he became an AirAsia pilot. He was stood down after his arrest.
During the trial he claimed to have been invited over to the woman's home for consensual but "unusual sexual practices".
He also claimed he had met the victim at a bar in Leederville prior to the offence.
But prosecutor Sean Dworcan told the court Eravelly had been dishonest about the whole encounter and also about his prior offending.
The court heard Eravelly did not disclose his Florida crimes when prompted by those compiling pre-sentence and psychological reports, ahead of his sentencing.
"This is a man who continues to be dishonest," Mr Dworcan said.
"He continues to tell lies.
"It was just sheer good luck that his DNA profile surfaces in the US because of what he did in that library with that female."
High profile defence lawyer Tom Percy QC described his client as a caring, responsible family man and highly respected pilot.
Mr Percy said his client's wife, an air-hostess, continued to stand by him and asked the court to show some "mercy" due to the hardship he would face in prison, due to him being a foreign national.
Judge Philip Eaton described Eravelly's version of events on the night as "fabricated" and said his actions were nothing short of "terrifying and disturbing."
"It is clear the impact of your offending is long lasting," he said.
"You remain in denial, without remorse."
Judge Eaton noted Eravelly had been promoted to the role of captain with Air Asia before his arrest.
"Your future in that industry is likely to be destroyed," the Judge added.
The 13 year sentence was backdated to February 19, this year.
Eravelly will be eligible for parole after 11 years.
