Baseball bat-wielding man goes on frenzy at Myer in Liverpool

A man remains under arrest after a violent spree in a busy department store which left shoppers shaken and merchandise damaged in Sydney's south west on Wednesday.

Horrified shoppers watched on as the man used a baseball bat to smash counters in the cosmetics section of Myer at Westfield in Liverpool.

Man goes on rampage in Myer store

A 52-year-old Sydney man has been arrested after he smashed counters with a baseball bat inside the Myer department store at Westfield Liverpool. Vision courtesy Seven News.

The man, dressed casually in shorts and a black shirt with a red backpack, shouted obscenities as he swung the bat at displays stocked with designer beauty products.

"There was a guy with a massive baseball bat screaming horrendous things," a shopper told Channel 7.

"I didn't know what was going on but he seemed really out of it."

Another witness Hala Dee posted on Facebook: "It was seriously the craziest thing I have ever seen."

Shoppers reportedly attempted to disarm the man before police were called to the scene about 2:30pm.

A NSW Police spokeswoman confirmed a 52-year-old man from Miller was arrested and taken to Liverpool Hospital where he underwent a mental health assessment.

No one was injured during the incident but but the department store was closed for one hour.

 "It all happened inside the cosmetics section of the Myer store," a department store spokeswoman said in a statement.

"That area ... was shut for an hour while the clean-up took place. Westfield worked with Myer on the clean-up before the store returned to regular trade."
