Yemen (
i/ˈjɛmən/; Arabic: اليَمَن al-Yaman), officially known as the Republic of Yemen (الجمهورية اليمنية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), is an Arab country in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen is the second largest country in the peninsula, occupying 527,970 km2 (203,850 sq mi). The coastline stretches for about 2,000 km (1,200 mi). It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south, and Oman to the east. Although Yemen's constitutionally stated capital is the city of Sana'a, the city has been under rebel control since February 2015. Because of this, Yemen's capital has been temporarily relocated to the port city of Aden, on the southern coast. Yemen's territory includes more than 200 islands; the largest of these is Socotra.
Yemen was the home of the Sabaeans (biblical Sheba), a trading state that flourished for over a thousand years and probably also included parts of modern-day Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 275 AD, the region came under the rule of the later Jewish influenced Himyarite Kingdom. Christianity arrived in the 4th century AD whereas Judaism and local paganism were already established. Islam spread quickly in the 7th century and Yemenite troops were crucial in the expansion of the early Islamic conquests. Administration of Yemen has long been notoriously difficult. Several dynasties emerged from the 9th to 16th century, the Rasulid being the strongest and most prosperous. The country was divided between the Ottoman and British empires in the early 20th century. The Zaydi Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen was established after World War I in North Yemen before the creation of Yemen Arab Republic in 1962. South Yemen remained a British protectorate until 1967. The two Yemeni states united to form the modern republic of Yemen in 1990.

Trans World Sport
Trans World Sport is a sports-related television programme produced by IMG Media in London and shown worldwide on a variety of television channels. It is world’s longest running weekly international television sports programme and has been in continuous production every week since 5 May 1987. Today, it is shown over 50 countries with a household reach of nearly 200 million. For over 25 years, they have endeavoured to bring not only the top names and events, but also the off-beat and esoteric stories from the world of sport.
The show was the brainchild of IMG founder, and sports marketing pioneer, Mark McCormack. Since its very first show, Trans World Sport's objective has remained the same; to bring its viewers the best, the most interesting and most informative stories from the world of sport. Their mantra has always been that there is no hierarchy in sport, and the idea is that what happens in La Liga has always been as important as what happens at the Sepak Takraw World Championship. They've had features on several sports stars including a 14-year-old Tiger Woods, a teenage Usain Bolt and Roger Federer, and on an 12-year-old Venus Williams and her 11-year-old sister, Serena Williams.

Yemeni People The culture of Yemen has an ancient history, influenced by Islam. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. Shi'as are primarily Zaidis, though they also have significant minorities of Twelver Shi'as and Musta'ali Western Isma'ili Shi'as (see: Shi'a Islam in Yemen).[1] The Sunnis are predominantly in the south and southeast. The Zaidis are predominantly in the north and northwest, while the Jafaris and Isma'ilis are mostly located in the main centers of Sana'a and Ma'rib. There are mixed communities in the larger cities. Less than 1% of Yemenis are non-Muslim, adhering to Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Atheism. There are also approximately 3,000 Christians, 400 Jews, and a minority of Hindus. The constitution and the laws protect and inhibit the freedom of religion. The music of Yemen is primarily known abroad for a series of pan-Arab popular stars and the Yemenite Jews, who became musical stars in Israel during the 20th century. In the Arab world, Yemen has long been a cultural center. Yemen's national anthem is "United Republic" written by Abdallah "al-Fadhool" Abdul Wahab Noman. UNESCO proclaimed the tradition of poetic songs in Sana'a, called al-Ghina al-San'ani, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 7, 2003. Qat, also known as Khat (Catha edulis), is a widely cultivated plant in Yemen and is generally used for chewing. When khat juice is swallowed, its leaf juice has an amphetamine-like effect. Yemenis wear traditional costumes and chew the narcotic khat-plant in the afternoons. Chewing khat is also part of the Yemeni business culture to promote decision-making, but it does not expect foreigners to participate. Football is the most popular sport in Yemen. The Yemeni national football team competes in the FIFA and AFC leagues. The country also hosts many football clubs. They compete in the national and international leagues. Linguistic Affiliation. The culture of Yemen has an ancient history, influenced by Islam. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. Shi'as are primarily Zaidis, though they also have significant minorities of Twelver Shi'as and Musta'ali Western Isma'ili Shi'as (see: Shi'a Islam in Yemen).[1] The Sunnis are
predominantly in the south and southeast. The Zaidis are predominantly in the north and northwest, while the Jafaris and Isma'ilis are mostly located in the main centers of Sana'a and Ma'rib. There are mixed communities in the larger cities.
Less than 1% of Yemenis are non-Muslim, adhering to Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Atheism. There are also approximately 3,000 Christians, 400 Jews, and a minority of Hindus. The constitution and the laws protect and inhibit the freedom of religion.
The music of Yemen is primarily known abroad for a series of pan-Arab popular stars and the Yemenite Jews, who became musical stars in Israel during the 20th century.
In the Arab world, Yemen has long been a cultural center.
Yemen's national anthem is "United Republic" written by Abdallah "al-Fadhool" Abdul Wahab Noman.
UNESCO proclaimed the tradition of poetic songs in Sana'a, called al-Ghina al-San'ani, a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on November 7, 2003.
Qat, also known as Khat (Catha edulis), is a widely cultivated plant in Yemen and is generally used for chewing. When khat juice is swallowed, its leaf juice has an amphetamine-like effect. Yemenis wear traditional costumes and chew the narcotic khat-plant in the afternoons. Chewing khat is also part of the Yemeni business culture to promote decision-making, but it does not expect foreigners to participate.
Football is the most popular sport in Yemen. The Yemeni national football team competes in the FIFA and AFC leagues. The country also hosts many football clubs.
They compete in the national and international leagues.
Linguistic Affiliation. Yemenis speak Arabic, which belongs to the Semitic language family. Classical

The Republic Of Yemen: there is almost no other country on Earth that possesses as many secrets and ancient legends as the Arabia Felix and the Bab Al Yemen, the gateway to the Yemen, is the entrance to the historic district of Sanaa, the Yemen’s capital city that it is believed to date back to the third century A.D. Women are rarely to be seen in Yemen’s marketplaces and, when they are, they are hidden from male glances by a protective veil. Islam still plays an important role in the daily cultural life of the people, including the traditional market places that are almost exclusively a male domain. The Republic Of Yemen covers a large part of the southwest of the Arabian Peninsula and contains several fascinating historical sites. East of Sanaa on the ancient Frankincense route, is the town of Marib that was once the residence of the legendary Queen Of Saba and in the extreme north is the town of Sadah, a region known for its powerful tribes. In the centre of the Djebel Harraz is the picturesque mountain village of Manakhah. Due to its location it was once a strategic point on the ancient trading route between the sea and the highlands. The breathtaking architecture of its buildings still testifies to the former prosperity of a village that today is well known for its popular market. Al Hudaydah was once the most important Turkish harbour on the Red Sea. The city was a commercial rival of the British occupied city of Aden to the south which, during colonial times, was of great importance in securing a sea route to India. In addition to the recent modernisation of the harbour the fishing industry still plays an important role and the fertile coastal waters of the Red Sea still ensure a good catch. To the south of Al Hudaydah is the legendary old harbour of Al Mokha, the former centre of the country’s coffee trade from which the world renowned Mocha coffee derived its name. Despite their present poverty the people here are a proud race and the ancient name of the Yemen, Arabia Felix, or “Arabia The Content”, is still a thing of the present.

Since 2011, when Yemeni youths took to the streets and sparked the eventual demise of former President Ali Abdullah Saleh's regime, the country has fallen to pieces. The new embattled government is now struggling to cope with a bevy of issues, including sectarian rivalries, CIA drone strikes, and one of al Qaeda's most sophisticated branches. It now risks presiding over the failure of one of the world's most fragile countries.
In "Yemen: A Failed State," VICE News visits some of Yemen's most dangerous and hard-to-reach places and groups, including the national Army in the country's lawless East, the Houthis in Sana'a, and the Popular Committee in the South, to find out how both the government and the West's policy toward Yemen have gone wrong.

The Yemenis consider themselves the "original" Arabs from whom all the other Arabs are descended. Indeed according to ancient scriptures,Quran and some suggestive statements in the Talmud there is evidence of this.
In ancient Yemen, named by the ancient Romans "Arabia Felix" ;Happy Arabia, there were 6 principal kingdoms: the Sabaean, Awsanian, Minaean, Qatabanian, Hadhramawtian, Himyarite. Sabaean was the oldest and one of the most powerful. Saba in Hebrew is "Sheba". Thus the fabled Queen of Sheba came from Sabaean kingdom. Queens in Arabia were common, and both the Bible and Quran refer to the Queen of Sheba whose real name was Bilquis!
Sana'a, the capital, is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Throughout in Yemen, Stone Age people left evidence of their occupation from 400,000BC (Discovered in Tahama on the Red sea of Yemen). Bronze Age people from 2000BC had developed many agricultural settlements throughout the area. Foremost of these was Marib where a huge dam was built to irrigate the terraced fields found here. The Marib Dam is considered the greatest technical structure of antiquity. You may see some of the ruins of this structure which collapsed around 600AD and which is nearby to a new dam serving the same purpose today.
Among Yemens natural and cultural attractions are four World Heritage sites:
1.The Old Walled City of Shibam in Wadi Hadhramaut, inscribed by UNESCO in 1982, is nicknamed "Manhattan of the Desert", because of its "skyscrapers". Surrounded by a fortified wall, the city is one of the oldest and examples of urban planning based on the principle of vertical construction.
2.The ancient city of Sana'a.
Even the name itself, Sana'a has a great history. It was previously known as the city of Shem, named after Shem the son of Noah,father of all semites, who was the first to order to build the city. It has also carried the name Azal after one of the sons of Yaqtin ibn Aa'z as mentioned in the Old Testament.
While the historical accuracy of such stories might be questioned, what is certain is that history in Yemen dates from the very dawn of humankind.
Sana'a an altitude of more than 7,000 feet has been inhabited for over two and a half millennia. Sanaa has 103 mosques, 14 hammams (traditional bath houses) and more than 6,000 houses that survive all date.
3.Close to the Red Sea Coast, the Historic Town of Zabid, was Yemens capital from the 13th to 15th Century. It played an important role for many centuries, because of its UNIVERSITY , which was a centre of learning for the whole Arab world. Arabic numbers were used there first on the peninsule and Algebra is said to have been invented there in the early 8th century by the little known scholar al-Jaladi.
4.The latest addition to Yemens list of World Heritage Sites is the Socotra Archipelago. Socotra or "Eipheba Sakhotora" which used to mean "The island of Happiness".Mentioned by Marco Polo in the 13th Century, Socotra islands and two rocky islets near the Gulf of Aden has rich biodiversity. 37% of Socotras 825 plants, 90% of its reptiles and 95% of its snails are unique and DO NOT OCCUR anywhere else in the world. It is home to 192 bird species, 253 species of coral, 730 species of costal fish and 300 species of crab and lobster, as well as a range of Aloes and the Dragons Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) or as it's known in Yemen: The tree of Cain and Abel (The name of this tree has always been linked with the name of Socotra due to its fame and importance since ancient times.The island people make cracks on the trees trunk and then a viscous red fluid flows and is left till it is dried up. After that they collect it and pack it for export.It is further used as medicine and many legends have been woven around it. According to one legend the tree grew from the blood of Abel when the first human crime occurred. As the blood flowed, the tree sprang from it. )
Yemen today is still not well known by the west so there could be more of these peculiarities on this beautiful mysterious country.

Socotra, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean has been a secluded territory for decades.
The island is about 250 kilometres from Somalia and approximately 340 kilometres from the mainland of Yemen.
Presently it is a part of the Republic of Yemen and due to its harsh weather conditions every element on the island is distinctive in itself.
It is believed that the name of the island originated from Sanskrit which means “blissful island.”
It is often regarded as the “lost world” and houses some of the most unique flora and fauna found on this planet.
It is believed that the group of islands got separated from the African Mainland about 6 or 7 million years ago.
With more discoveries and exploration taking place, remarkable facts about this place has been revealed over the past couple of decades.
Interesting Facts About Socotra
It is compared to the Galapagos Islands as it features more than 800 rare species of flora and fauna. It is believed that 1/3rd of these are found nowhere on the planet.
The vegetation at the islands have adapted and evolved for suiting the hostile climate. Some of these plants have been there for over 20 million years.
Desert Rose and the Bottle Tree are some of the popular plants to see on the islands.
With over 140 different types of birds, the island is a treat for every bird lover. Around 10 of these birds can be seen nowhere on the planet.
Average temperature on the island stays around 25°C. Also, the island receives hardly any form of rainfall throughout the year.
It was a part of the Gondwana super continent and was detached during the Miocene.
Socotra’s population is about 60,000 and it was only two years ago when the 1st road on the island was built.
Declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site the island is characterized by 3 different terrains, namely, Narrow Coastal Plains, Mountains, and the limestone plateau.
The animal family consists of no amphibians and only one native mammal i.e. Bat.
However, the island is dominated by reptiles which comprise about 90% animal population on the island. Skinks, legless lizards, chameleon are among the most found animals here.

The island is about 250 kilometres from Somalia and approximately 340 kilometres from the mainland of Yemen.
Presently it is a part of the Republic of Yemen and due to its harsh weather conditions every element on the island is distinctive in itself.
It is believed that the name of the island originated from Sanskrit which means “blissful island.”
It is often regarded as the “lost world” and houses some of the most unique flora and fauna found on this planet.
It is believed that the group of islands got separated from the African Mainland about 6 or 7 million years ago.
With more discoveries and exploration taking place, remarkable facts about this place has been revealed over the past couple of decades.
Interesting Facts About Socotra
It is compared to the Galapagos Islands as it features more than 800 rare species of flora and fauna. It is believed that 1/3rd of these are found nowhere on the planet.
The vegetation at the islands have adapted and evolved for suiting the hostile climate. Some of these plants have been there for over 20 million years.
Desert Rose and the Bottle Tree are some of the popular plants to see on the islands.
With over 140 different types of birds, the island is a treat for every bird lover. Around 10 of these birds can be seen nowhere on the planet.
Average temperature on the island stays around 25°C. Also, the island receives hardly any form of rainfall throughout the year.
It was a part of the Gondwana super continent and was detached during the Miocene.
Socotra’s population is about 60,000 and it was only two years ago when the 1st road on the island was built.
Declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site the island is characterized by 3 different terrains, namely, Narrow Coastal Plains, Mountains, and the limestone plateau.
The animal family consists of no amphibians and only one native mammal i.e. Bat.
However, the island is dominated by reptiles which comprise about 90% animal population on the island. Skinks, legless lizards, chameleon are among the most found animals here.

predominantly in the south and southeast. The Zaidis are predominantly in the north and northwest, while the Jafaris and Isma'ilis are mostly located in the main centers of Sana'a and Ma'rib. There are mixed communities in the larger cities.
Less than 1% of Yemenis are non-Muslim, adhering to Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Atheism. There are also approximately 3,000 Christians, 400 Jews, and a minority of Hindus. The constitution and the laws protect and inhibit the freedom of religion.
The music of Yemen is primarily known abroad for a series of pan-Arab popular stars and the Yemenite Jews, who became musical stars in Israel during the 20th century.
In the Arab world, Yemen has long been a cultural center.
Yemen's national anthem is "United Republic" written by Abdallah "al-Fadhool" Abdul Wahab Noman.

Yemeni People
The culture of Yemen has an ancient history, influenced by Islam. Due to its unique geographic location, Yemen has acquired a very distinctive culture from its neighbors; historically and culturally, the people of Yemen have closer ties with the Horn of Africa (Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti, and Ethiopia) than they do with the rest of Arabia and the Middle East.Religion in Yemen primarily consists of two principal religious groups of Islam; Sunni and Shi'a. About 65% of the Muslim population is Sunni, and 30% is Shi'a. Sunnis are primarily Shafi'i, but also include significant groups of Malikis and Hanbalis. Shi'as are primarily Zaidis, though they also have significant minorities of Twelver Shi'as and Musta'ali Western Isma'ili Shi'as (see: Shi'a Islam in Yemen).[1] The Sunnis are
predominantly in the south and southeast. The Zaidis are predominantly in the north and northwest, while the Jafaris and Isma'ilis are mostly located in the main centers of Sana'a and Ma'rib. There are mixed communities in the larger cities.
Less than 1% of Yemenis are non-Muslim, adhering to Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Atheism. There are also approximately 3,000 Christians, 400 Jews, and a minority of Hindus. The constitution and the laws protect and inhibit the freedom of religion.
The music of Yemen is primarily known abroad for a series of pan-Arab popular stars and the Yemenite Jews, who became musical stars in Israel during the 20th century.
In the Arab world, Yemen has long been a cultural center.

In the two years since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen's civil war, fighting has often spilled over the country's borders.
Until now, that meant shelling of Saudi cities and villages close to the frontier.
But the Houthi rebels who control the capital Sanaa, and much of the north of the country, have long threatened to take the war directly to Saudi Arabia.
The group says it is now able to target major cities in Saudi Arabia and claims to have successfully hit a Saudi oil facility in the Red Sea port of Yanbu last week. US officials have confirmed the missile strike but the Saudi government denied it.
The development is significant because Yanbu is more than 900km from the northern Yemeni province of Saada, from which the missile was launched. If Yanbu is within range of Houthi weaponry then so is much of the rest of Saudi Arabia.
While the Saudis deny reports of the Yanbu attack they say they did intercept a missile 69km south of Mecca this week. The Saudi-led coalition called that launch a "desperate attempt" to disrupt the upcoming pilgrimage season.
So if the Houthis really are capable of attacking cities and oil facilities deep inside the Kingdom, what does that mean for the ongoing war in Yemen?
