Ethiopia (/ˌiːθiˈoʊpiə/; Amharic: ኢትዮጵያ?, ʾĪtyōṗṗyā, listen ), officially known as the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (የኢትዮጵያ ፌዴራላዊ ዲሞክራሲያዊ ሪፐብሊክ, ye-Ītyōṗṗyā Fēdēralāwī Dīmōkrāsīyāwī Rīpeblīk listen ), is a sovereign state located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea to the north and northeast, Djibouti and Somalia to the east, Sudan and South Sudan to the west, and Kenya to the south. With over 100 million inhabitants, Ethiopia is the most populous landlocked country in the world, as well as the second-most populous nation on the African continent after Nigeria. It occupies a total area of 1,100,000 square kilometres (420,000 sq mi), and its capital and largest city is Addis Ababa.
Some of the oldest evidence for anatomically modern humans has been found in Ethiopia, which is widely considered the region from which Homo sapiens first set out for the Middle East and points beyond. According to linguists, the first Afroasiatic-speaking populations settled in the Horn region during the ensuing Neolithic era. Tracing its roots to the 2nd millennium BC, Ethiopia was a monarchy for most of its history. During the first centuries AD the Kingdom of Aksum maintained a unified civilization in the region. followed by Abyssinia circa 1137.

Ethiopia's been on the list of the world's fastest growing economies for the past 10 years. It has also been climbing the rungs of the World Bank's Ease of Doing Business report. But to what extent does the wave of social and political unrest hitting the country risk thwarting economic prospects? Africa Inc. explores this with Mulugeta Kelil, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to South Africa, Tryphosa Ramano from PPC and Tony de la Motte from Group Five.

Ethiopia's new proposal sets to transform economy
Ethiopia is the largest producer of livestock in Africa and is consistently listed in the top 10 worldwide, with over 100 million cattle, sheep, and goats. Ethiopia has been producing and exporting prized leathers since the days of Pharaohs along with luxurious spices like frankincense, incense, and myrrh. As a result, leather has been at the core of Ethiopia's economy for many centuries. Parker Clay, www.parkerclay.com is hand selecting each piece of leather to ensure that only the best quality is used in every product. The hardware we use is also world class such as our RiRi zippers imported from Switzerland. We are also using hand woven scarfs from a group of women in the capital city of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. Each piece that makes up a Parker Clay product is carefully selected to ...
The newly produced series ‘Aid or Trade?’ shows that aid is no longer about transferring money or shipping goods. It’s rather about setting up sustainable companies, while taking local constraints and the environment into account. An article in the Economist recently stated 'Western governments should open up to trade rather than just dish out aid … Autocracy, corruption and strife will not disappear overnight. But at a dark time for the world economy, Africa’s progress is a reminder of the transformative promise of growth.' This 5 episode-series 'Aid or Trade?' (5 x 14 minutes) shows an optimistic and nuanced perspective and portrays successful combinations and collaborations. The program highlights high-potential or successful initiatives: often collaboration between NGO’s, private, and...
We designed the women’s leadership audio toolkit with a woman named Fantu because women like her form the backbone of the Ethiopian economy, yet have largely been excluded from leadership development. Fantu is a single mother that I met while researching a women’s self help group model – a model where 15 women get together and begin saving money (or sometimes they start by saving coffee beans) providing other group members accountability and support. Once the group has amassed enough capital they keep saving, but begin doling out small loans within the group, charging interest, and maintaining almost 0% default rate on loans. Fantu’s group started 3 years ago with each woman saving 50 coffee beans a month and now has a working capital of over $3500 of which they have used to start small b...

Most recently Higher Grounds and its spin-off non-profit, On The Ground, conducted the Run Across Ethiopia a fund raiser for construction of three schools in south central Ethiopia. When Liya Kebede recently returned to Ethiopia, her home country, she was shocked by the statistics on maternal health: 94% of women still give birth at home without a trained attendant, with more than 300,000 women dying each year around the world in pregnancy and childbirth. But smart aid money is starting to write a new story of skilled birth attendants and increasing chances of survival for mothers and their children.
Bossena, Birtukan and Agegneush were suffering from obstetric fistula. Contrary to the 2 to 3 million women still waiting for fistula treatment, these three Ethiopian women were able to access surgery to repair the fistula. This video takes place in Ethiopia, following these women from the village to the hospital where they will finally be treated. Only 10,000 – 15,000 women in the world are treated for fistula each year, it’s a drop in the ocean of the 100 000 new cases occurring annually. Travel video about destination Ethiopia. Ethiopia is a mysterious, mountainous land in the Horn Of Africa and birthplace of Early Christianity. A country of rock churches in the north and a large variety of tribes along the Rift Valley in the south and the oldest civilised region in Africa with more than twenty five centuries of documented history. Addis Abeba is the capital of Ethiopia and within its centre is the lavishly furnished Menbere Selassie Church, final place of rest of Ethiopia’s last royal family. It contains the Empress Menen, two princes and Emperor Haile Selassie who, shortly after removal from power, died due to reasons that are in the main controversial. As regional forces fight Islamic terror organisations to regain stability in eastern Africa, Ethiopian troops in Somalia say they have delivered a major blow al-Shabaab, a terrorist group aligned with al-Qaeda. Ethiopian Defense Forces Driving out the Eritrean terrorists
At least 11 journalists and bloggers are currently in prison. Six others were released just before Obama’s visit. We look at the remarkable story of two Swedish journalists who traveled to Ethiopia in 2011 to report on the actions of the Swedish oil company Lundin Oil in the Ogaden region, where there has been a fight for independence since the 1970s. On many of its thirty seven islands, Lake Tana in Northern Ethiopia is well known for its ancient churches and monast...
