Its ancient names include Iyo-no-futana-shima (伊予之二名島), Iyo-shima (伊予島), and Futana-shima (二名島). The current name refers to the four former provinces that made up the island: Awa, Tosa, Sanuki, and Iyo.
Shikoku island, comprising Shikoku and its surrounding islets, covers about 18,800 square kilometres (7,259 sq mi) and consists of four prefectures: Ehime, Kagawa, Kōchi, and Tokushima. Across the Inland Sea lie Wakayama, Osaka, Hyōgo, Okayama, Hiroshima, and Yamaguchi Prefectures on Honshu. To the west lie Ōita and Miyazaki Prefectures on Kyushu.
The 50th largest island by area in the world, Shikoku is smaller than Sardinia and Bananal, but larger than Halmahera and Seram. By population, it ranks 23rd, having fewer inhabitants than Sicily or Singapore, but more than Puerto Rico or Negros.

The place to experience Japan’s ancient past is Shikoku, an island famous for its ‘Shikoku Henro’. The word ‘Henro’ means pilgrim, and the best way to visit ‘Shikoku’ is to walk some of its many pilgrimage paths. Nagoro is a village in the Iya Valley on the island of Shikoku in Tokushima Prefecture in Japan. It is known for the large number of realistic scarecrows positioned throughout the village, which have made it a tourist attraction.
Trip to Japan's 4th largest island, Shikoku. Includes stops at Himeji Castle, train trip on the Marine Liner from Okayama to Takamatsu, Ritsurin Garden, Yakuri Temple, and traveling by car up the Iya Valley, which is known for being one of the last few vestiges of old world Japan with its dramatic mountain valleys, thatched roof farmhouses and historic vine bridges. We spent one night at Chiiori, a 300 year-old farmhouse (restored with modern conveniences) located high up in the mountains of Iya Valley.
Located in the Iya Valley in Shikoku Japan, the Kazurabashi Bridge is a bridge made of vines crossing the Iya River. A major tourist attraction in the area, this bridge charges a "toll" of 500 Yen to cross. Japan Travel: Naruto whirlpools Sightseeing cruises Naruto city, Shikoku Tokushima13 Moopon Naruto, part of Tokushima Prefecture, is the northeastern most city on Shikoku Island. The city is known for its swirling whirlpools. You can see them in the Strait of Naruto underneath the Onaruto Bridge which connects Tokushima to Awaji Island. Naruto is also the starting point of the Shikoku Pilgrimage or Henro, which is a religious pilgrimage where one goes around visiting the 88 holy temples on Shikoku. About Naruto whirlpools Because of the change of tides, the whirlpools occur roughly every six hours and can typically be seen once in the morning and once in the afternoon for an hour or two. Children play in the park, they don't know
I'm alone in the dark, even though
Time and time again I see your face smiling inside
I'm so happy
That you love me
Life is lovely
When you're near me
Tell me you will stay
Make me smile
Living life is just a game so they say
All the games we used to play fade away
We may now enjoy the dreams we shared so long ago
Oh my darling, got to have you. Feel the magic when I hold you
Cry sweet tears of joy, touch the sky
Now I need you more than ever. No more crying - we're together
