#WinterIsHere: Game of Thrones trailer promises epic destruction for season 7

It's fitting that a day after the solstice, HBO has dropped its icy new trailer for season seven of Game Of Thrones, with a simple hashtag: #WinterIsHere.

The action-packed new trailer, which opens with a lengthy close-up of a determined Sansa, follows the lead characters as they mount up for the bloody battle to come.

Trailer 2: Game of Thrones season 7

Wintery battles abound in Game of Thrones season 7.

Among the offerings to be pored over are the raspy tones of Jon Snow, seemingly making a pitch for Daenerys' might, who's pictured at her ancestral birthplace, Dragonstone.

"For centuries our families fought together, against their common enemy. Despite their differences, together," pleads Snow.

"We need to do the same if we're going to survive, because the enemy is real. It's always been real."

Alongside the usual faves, there's also a sinister glimpse at Euron Greyjoy, who actor Pilou Asbaek recently hyped as the season's nuttiest villain.

"After this, Ramsay Bolton's gonna look like a little kid," he ominously told Empire magazine.

The trailer, with its wide shots of marauding armies amidst flaming battlefields, also confirms the epic grandeur promised by the series' creators, who said the shortened season – seven episodes rather than the usual ten – meant bigger budgets, longer run-times and stronger production per episode.

The season premieres on July 16.
