Lee Louis Daniels (born December 25, 1959) is an American film and television producer and director. He produced Monster's Ball and directed Precious, which received six Academy Award nominations, including Best Director; the film won two of the awards. In 2012, Daniels directed The Butler, a historical fiction drama featuring an ensemble cast portraying unique events on the 20th century presidents of the United States at the White House. Daniels is also a co-creator, executive producer and director of the television series Empire that debuted in 2015.
Daniels was born on Christmas Eve, 1959, the son of Clara Watson and William L. Daniels, in Philadelphia. He graduated from upscale, suburban Radnor High School in 1978, and then Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri. He couldn't afford film school, so he started in a liberal arts college in Missouri but realized it wasn't for him, and started working as a receptionist in a nursing agency in California. Realizing he could do it on his own, he quit the job and started his own agency. At the age of 21, his company had 5000 nurses affiliated with it. He sold the company and went to work casting actors using his skills from 'casting' nurses. He began his career in entertainment as a casting director and manager after a chance meeting with a Hollywood producer, working on such projects as Under the Cherry Moon and Purple Rain. He continued managing talent. The documentary My Big Break features Daniels early in his career when he was managing actor Wes Bentley who starred as Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. In the documentary, Daniels comments on Bentley's reluctance to capitalize on his newfound celebrity status.
Mariah Carey (born March 27, 1969 or 1970) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She rose to prominence after the release of the first single taken from her eponymous debut album in 1990, "Vision of Love". More than two decades later, Rolling Stone defined the song as an influence on "virtually every other female R&B singer since the nineties". Mariah Carey produced four chart-topping singles in the US and began what would become a string of commercially successful albums which solidified the singer as Columbia's highest selling act. Carey and Boyz II Men spent a record sixteen weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 with "One Sweet Day", which remains the longest-running number-one song in US chart history. Following a contemptuous divorce from Sony Music head Tommy Mottola, Carey adopted a new image and traversed towards R&B with the release of Butterfly (1997). In 1998, she was honored as the world's best-selling recording artist of the 1990s at the World Music Awards and subsequently named the best-selling female artist of the millennium in 2000.

Instead, as he told Don Lemon, Daniels had simply asked Mo’Nique to play Hollywood politics during awards season, and she famously refused. While he praised Mo’Nique’s talents — “she’s brilliant, and I like working with brilliant people” — Daniels said that she made numerous “demands” during the awards campaign for Precious that damaged her own reputation. “She was making unreasonable demands, and she wasn’t thinking — this was when reverse racism was happening, I think,” Daniels told Lemon. “I told her, ‘You have to thank the producers of the...

There have been rumors floating around about Mo’Nique in regards to the FOX hit show, Empire — and she swings by Sway in the Morning to set the record straight. Allegedly, Lee Daniels the director of the popular TV show, Empire, claims Mo’Nique was never considered for the role of Cookie, but Mo humbly brought proof that she indeed was — a printed email chain between her and Daniel’s team. She explains to us that she merely wants the truth to be associated with her name and character. And as far as the rumors go about her being “difficult” or a “diva?” She clears that up too. “Pay me according to my resume.” Mo’Nique says. “Sometimes ‘no’ can mean you’re difficult. When you’re not used to hearing someone say no, that can appear as if you’re difficult… If we keep accepting those low offe...

“There’s only one person in this race who said Black Lives Matter,” Empire‘s Bryshere Gray says in a new pro-Hillary Clinton ad directed by Lee Daniels. Coming just one day after Clinton running mate Tim Kaine and GOP No. 2 contender Mike Pence debate, the one-minute ad from the co-creator of the hit Fox hip-hop drama — which aired during tonight’s episode — lists off Trayvon Martin and other victims of gun violence and makes a plea for the former New York senator as the candidate of tolerance. With passing but direct reference to GOP nominee Donald Trump, the millennial-targeted ad urges young Americans to get out and vote. Along with Gray and Daniels, the spot also features Empire matriarch Taraji P. Henson and her co-stars Trai Byers, Jussie Smollett, Tasha Smith, Gabourey Sidibe and Gr...
The famous Lee Daniels "What Will You Say?" political TV commercial for Hillary Clinton featuring the cast of the hit HBO series Empire. Using the popular stars, including Lee Daniels, Jussie Smollet, Taraji P. Henson, Trai Byers, Jussie Smollet, Tasha Smith and Gabourey Sidibe, the major commercial is designed as appealing to the black and African-American community. Daniels, the creator of Empire with Danny Strong, had been a strong supporter of Hillary Clinton and appeared at the Democratic Convention (DNC) for her. The political commercial asks what will you tell future generations if you fail to vote, with an anti-Trump message. Critics argued that this TV ad split Americans on ethnic lines, but proponents believe it is a legitimate get out the vote campaign in the black community...
