Samuel Carthorne Rivers (September 25, 1923 – December 26, 2011) was an American jazz musician and composer. He performed on soprano and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet, flute, harmonica and piano.
Active in jazz since the early 1950s, he earned wider attention during the mid-1960s spread of free jazz. With a thorough command of music theory, orchestration and composition, Rivers was an influential and prominent artist in jazz music.
Rivers was born in El Reno, Oklahoma. His father was a gospel musician who had sung with the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Silverstone Quartet, exposing Rivers to music from an early age. Rivers was stationed in California in the 1940s during a stint in the Navy. Here he performed semi-regularly with blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon. Rivers moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1947, where he studied at the Boston Conservatory with Alan Hovhaness.
He performed with Quincy Jones, Herb Pomeroy, Tadd Dameron and others.
In 1959 Rivers began performing with 13-year-old drummer Tony Williams. Rivers was briefly a member of the Miles Davis Quintet in 1964, partly on Williams's recommendation. This edition of the quintet released a single live album, Miles in Tokyo, from a show recorded on July 14 at Kohseinenkin Hall. Rivers' tenure with the quintet was brief: he had engagements in Boston, and his playing style was too avant-garde for Davis during this period; he was replaced by Wayne Shorter shortly thereafter.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague.
Rivers are part of the hydrological cycle. Water generally collects in a river from precipitation through a drainage basin from surface runoff and other sources such as groundwater recharge, springs, and the release of stored water in natural ice and snowpacks (e.g. from glaciers). Potamology is the scientific study of rivers while limnology is the study of inland waters in general.
Dave Holland (born 1 October 1946) is an English jazz double bassist, composer and bandleader who has been performing and recording for five decades. He has lived in the United States for over 40 years.
His work ranges from pieces for solo performance to big band. Holland runs his own independent record label, Dare2, which he launched in 2005. He has explained his musical philosophy by quoting fellow jazz artist Sam Rivers: "Sam said, 'Don't leave anything out – play all of it.'"
Holland has played with some of the greatest names in jazz, and has participated in several classic recording sessions.
Born in Wolverhampton, England, Holland taught himself how to play stringed instruments, beginning at four on the ukulele, then graduating to guitar and later bass guitar. He quit school at the age of 15 to pursue his profession in a top 40 band, but soon gravitated to jazz. After seeing an issue of Down Beat where Ray Brown had won the critics' poll for best bass player, Holland went to a record store, and bought a couple of LPs featuring Brown backing pianist Oscar Peterson. He also bought two Leroy Vinnegar albums (Leroy Walks! and Leroy Walks Again) because the bassist was posed with his instrument on the cover. Within a week, Holland traded in his bass guitar for an acoustic bass and began practicing with the records. In addition to Brown and Vinnegar, Holland was drawn to the bassists Charles Mingus and Jimmy Garrison.
Keith Rivers (born May 5, 1986) is a former American football linebacker. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals ninth overall in the 2008 NFL Draft and also played for the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills. He played college football at USC.
Rivers was a highly decorated letterman in football at Lake Mary High School in Lake Mary, Florida. His awards include USA Today All-USA first team, Parade All-American, Super Prep All-American, Prep Star All-American, EA Sports All-American, Insiders.com All-American, Super Prep Elite 50, Prep Star Top 100 Dream Team, Lemming Top 10, Super Prep All-Dixie, Prep Star All-Southeast, Fox Sports Net All-South, Gatorade Florida Player of the Year and Florida Class 6A Mr. Football runner-up as a senior linebacker. He played in the 2004 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
Rivers was heavily recruited. Then-University of Florida coach Ron Zook, noted for his recruiting ability, made a strong push, including talking to Rivers at 2 a.m. on National Signing Day in 2003. In the end, Rivers selected USC; and, to cinch the pact, the Trojan coaching staff committed to bestowing Rivers, a worthy future player, with the famed USC linebacker jersey # 55 to wear during his Trojan career, which is selectively awarded and has traditionally been given to a promising linebacker with the potential of becoming a USC football and NFL great, and includes past Trojan and NFL star players, all members of the so-called USC linebacker "Club 55", such as Junior Seau, Willie McGinest and Chris Claiborne.
Barry Altschul (born January 6, 1943, New York City) is a free jazz and hard bop drummer who gained fame in the late 1960s with the pianists Paul Bley and Chick Corea.
Altschul, having initially taught himself to play drums, studied with Charlie Persip during the 1960s. In the latter part of the decade, he performed with Paul Bley. In 1969 he joined with Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Anthony Braxton to form the group Circle. At the time, he made use of a high-pitched Gretsch kit with add-on drums and percussion instruments, which he integrated seamlessly in a whirlwind of sound.
In the 1970s Altschul worked extensively with Anthony Braxton's quartet featuring Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, and George Lewis. Braxton, signed to Arista Records, was able to secure a large enough budget to tour with a collection of dozens of percussion instruments, strings and winds. In addition to his participation in ensembles featuring avant-garde musicians, Altschul performed with Lee Konitz, Art Pepper and other "straight ahead" jazz performers.

‘Gravity’s Law’ is a short film by Matt McDermott based on a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke. Commissioned by Channel 4 Random Acts. 'To fall, patiently to trust our heaviness' Inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem ‘Gravity’s Law’, McDermott taps into themes of meditation and nature in a deliberate response to the overload of information in modern society. He was drawn to The Barbican Centre and estate because of its otherworldly quality and achieves a sense of calm with his long freefalling shots against the brutalist architecture. Guitarist, composer, and innovator James Blood Ulmer comes from that rich history of American roots music. Not only has he lived an interesting life, but all of Ulmer’s musical accomplishments have been of self-discovery. From playing gospel music as a child, to backing and playing with some of Rhythm and Blues‘ vocal greats, to playing jazz and rock, and now the blues, Ulmer’s progression has allowed him to become one of the country’s blazing musical pioneer’s. But to truly understand James’s genius, one must know about his beginnings. Born February 2nd, 1942 in St. Matthews, South Carolina, his father got him started early in music. He sang in his father’s traveling gospel group and was exposed to singing at revivals and special church services. Ulmer’s very strict religious background...

A wonderfully lyric ballad with allusions to play and work songs follows. Dedicated to Bang's friend, Dennis Charles, who went by the nickname Jazz, this composition was titled "One for Jazz". Included in the piece is a poem that was his friend's favorite, authored and spoken here by Bang. The piece ends with a firey, non-stop cadenza at pr...

Chitty, chitty chat, chitty chat,
Surrounded by the sycophants,
But he's a cool, cool cat,
He is 79 years old,
He's heard it all before,
He'll hear it all some more,
This is your chance,
It's your once chance,
Will you just ask for an autograph?
Can you find a single word that he hasn't heard,
Though it's not what he demands?
A personal experience,
You cannot explain,
At the Ceremony Hall,
Everything just changed,
And you can't possibly understand
If you listen with your eyes you'll be mystified by the superficial signs,
If you listen with your ears there is an outside chance that you will hear,
If everything goes as planned,
As it always can with an improvising man,
Tonight you will see the light,
I know it sounds trite,
But it is alright
A personal experience,
You cannot explain,
At the Ceremony Hall,
Everything just changed,
And you can't possibly understand
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
Tonight you will see the light,
