Kinshasa is normally one of Africa's busiest, most bustling even chaotic cities.
But on the streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital barely anything moved on Wednesday.
Shopes closed and public transport ground to a halt.
A nationwide strike was called for by the country's main opposition group following the annoucement that presidential elections will take place in April 2018, instead of next month when they were due.
Critics of President Joseph Kabila say he's using the delay to extend his 15 year long rule, and in so doing, violating the constitution.
But President Kabila's government has claimed the election must be postponed so they can properly prepare.
So, is this African country sliding into a crisis?

Every day, MSF is confronted with the medical consequences of violence in its hospitals, health centers and mobile clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Medical teams treat trauma injuries from guns, machetes, lances, rifle bayonets, knives, hammers, shells, bows and arrows. But for those on the receiving end, there is often no escape from the violence.
Habagasi, an 80-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions at a displaced persons camp on the outskirts of Goma, has been looking after the orphaned children left behind when her family were murdered: "I had eight sons; they were killed together with my husband and they pumped bullets into my body."
Having fled for their lives, Habagasi and her grandchildren thought they'd be safe at an 'official' displaced persons camp, but the violence continued: "The first month here, M23 raided. They looted our food rations, clothes, phones... they stole all of that. They did bad things to me."
Unfortunately, Habagasi is not alone in suffering violence at the hands of armed groups.
Some 2.96 million people are currently displaced in DRC and many of them have no access to humanitarian assistance. Many communities are cut off from medical care due to poor infrastructure, displacement and conflict, and adequate assistance is not being provided in rural and conflict-affected areas by aid organizations and by the state. At the same time, violence against civilians, medical staff and property is commonplace, and health care providers are regularly required to suspend operations, leaving people deprived of the medical care they urgently need.

1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fourth most-populated nation in Africa and the eighteenth most populated country in the world. The people of the DRC represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. There is no concrete data on population numbers, but the estimate is between 29,500 and 50,000 individuals.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency. It’s called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. During its period of validity, the Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs and leaders, who used them primarily for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main and longest use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, with an abundance of gold, tantalum, tungsten, and tin – all minerals used in electronics such as cell phones and laptops – yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

Democratic republic
A democratic republic is, strictly speaking, a country that is both a republic and a democracy. It is one where ultimate authority and power is derived from the citizens, and the government itself is run through elected officials.
However, in recent practice, countries that have described themselves as democratic republics have not always held free or fair elections. Two examples of this were the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, communist states commonly known as East Germany and North Vietnam. Another is the Democratic Republic of the Congo which in 2011 was rated by Freedom House as a "not free" country, having a rating of 6.0 (1.0 being completely free and 7.0 being completely unfree). Also, the 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea', commonly known as North Korea, is rated the least democratic in the world, run by a dictator. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote.

The Republic of the Congo (French: République du Congo), also known as Congo, Congo Republic,West Congo, or Congo-Brazzaville, is a country located in Central Africa. It is bordered by five countries: Gabon to the west; Cameroon to the northwest; the Central African Republic to the northeast; the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the east and south; and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda to the southwest.
The region was dominated by Bantu-speaking tribes, who built trade links leading into the Congo River basin. Congo-Brazzaville was formerly part of the French colony of Equatorial Africa. Upon independence in 1960, the former colony of French Congo became the Republic of the Congo. The People's Republic of the Congo was a Marxist–Leninist one-party state from 1970 to 1991. Multi-party elections have been held since 1992, although a democratically elected government was ousted in the 1997 Republic of the Congo Civil War and President Denis Sassou Nguesso has ruled for 26 of the past 36 years.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (/ˈkɒŋɡoʊ/; French pronunciation: [kɔ̃ɡo]; French: République démocratique du Congo), also known as DR Congo, DRC, DROC, RDC, Congo-Kinshasa, or simply Congo is a country located in Central Africa. From 1971 to 1997 it was named Zaïre. The DRC borders the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan to the north; Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania to the east; Zambia and Angola to the south; and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is the second largest country in Africa by area, the largest in Subsaharan Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world. With a population of over 75 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populated officially Francophone country, the fourth most populated nation in Africa and the nineteenth most populated country in the world.
The Congolese Civil Wars, which began in 1996, brought about the end of Mobutu Sese Seko's 31-year reign and devastated the country. The wars ultimately involved nine African nations, multiple groups of UN peacekeepers and twenty armed groups, and resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania. 2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fourth most-populated nation in Africa and the eighteenth most populated country in the world. The people of the DRC represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world. 3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future. 4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers. 5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. There is no concrete data on population numbers, but the estimate is between 29,500 and 50,000 individuals. 6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency. It’s called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. During its period of validity, the Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs and leaders, who used them primarily for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main and longest use was to bind marriages. 7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, with an abundance of gold, tantalum, tungsten, and tin – all minerals used in electronics such as cell phones and laptops – yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence. Every day, MSF is confronted with the medical consequences of violence in its hospitals, health centers and mobile clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Medical teams treat trauma injuries from guns, machetes, lances, rifle bayonets, knives, hammers, shells, bows and arrows. But for those on the receiving end, there is often no escape from the violence.
Habagasi, an 80-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions at a displaced persons camp on the outskirts of Goma, has been looking after the orphaned children left behind when her family were murdered: "I had eight sons; they were killed together with my husband and they pumped bullets into my body."
Having fled for their lives, Habagasi and her grandchildren thought they'd be safe at an 'official' displaced persons camp, but the violence continued: "The first month here, M23 raided. They looted our food rations, clothes, phones... they stole all of that. They did bad things to me."
Unfortunately, Habagasi is not alone in suffering violence at the hands of armed groups.
Some 2.96 million people are currently displaced in DRC and many of them have no access to humanitarian assistance. Many communities are cut off from medical care due to poor infrastructure, displacement and conflict, and adequate assistance is not being provided in rural and conflict-affected areas by aid organizations and by the state. At the same time, violence against civilians, medical staff and property is commonplace, and health care providers are regularly required to suspend operations, leaving people deprived of the medical care they urgently need.

1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fourth most-populated nation in Africa and the eighteenth most populated country in the world. The people of the DRC represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. There is no concrete data on population numbers, but the estimate is between 29,500 and 50,000 individuals.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency. It’s called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. During its period of validity, the Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs and leaders, who used them primarily for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main and longest use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, with an abundance of gold, tantalum, tungsten, and tin – all minerals used in electronics such as cell phones and laptops – yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

Every day, MSF is confronted with the medical consequences of violence in its hospitals, health centers and mobile clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Medical teams treat trauma injuries from guns, machetes, lances, rifle bayonets, knives, hammers, shells, bows and arrows. But for those on the receiving end, there is often no escape from the violence.
Habagasi, an 80-year-old woman living in deplorable conditions at a displaced persons camp on the outskirts of Goma, has been looking after the orphaned children left behind when her family were murdered: "I had eight sons; they were killed together with my husband and they pumped bullets into my body."
Having fled for their lives, Habagasi and her grandchildren thought they'd be safe at an 'official' displaced persons camp, but the violence continued: "The first month here, M23 raided. They looted our food rations, clothes, phones... they stole all of that. They did bad things to me."
Unfortunately, Habagasi is not alone in suffering violence at the hands of armed groups.
Some 2.96 million people are currently displaced in DRC and many of them have no access to humanitarian assistance. Many communities are cut off from medical care due to poor infrastructure, displacement and conflict, and adequate assistance is not being provided in rural and conflict-affected areas by aid organizations and by the state. At the same time, violence against civilians, medical staff and property is commonplace, and health care providers are regularly required to suspend operations, leaving people deprived of the medical care they urgently need.

1. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the 2nd largest country in Africa and 11th largest in the world. At 2,344,858 square kilometers, the DRC covers a land area larger than the combined territories of Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and Lithuania.
2. With a population of over 80 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the fourth most-populated nation in Africa and the eighteenth most populated country in the world. The people of the DRC represent over 200 ethnic groups, with nearly 250 languages and dialects spoken throughout the country. Kinshasa, the capital, is the largest French-speaking city in the world.
3. Despite being a poor and conflict-ridden country, the DRC boasts a space program. Privately financed by the Développement Tous Azimuts (DTA), with significant government support, the Troposphere rockets are expected to send cargo to outer space in the near future.
4. Kinshasa and Brazzaville in the next-door Republic of Congo are the closest capital cities in the world (with the exception of Vatican City and Rome). A bridge across the Congo River still needs to be constructed to connect the two political centers.
5. The great apes, such as the bonobos and the eastern lowland gorillas, can be found only in Congo. Along with the common chimpanzee, the bonobo is the closest extant relative to humans. There is no concrete data on population numbers, but the estimate is between 29,500 and 50,000 individuals.
6. The DRC used to have a very strange form of currency. It’s called the Katanga cross. The metal is made of copper and is shaped in the form of an X. During its period of validity, the Katanga cross underwent a change of value from being owned by tribal chiefs and leaders, who used them primarily for large transactions or rituals, to a more widespread use for purchasing perishable goods, although its main and longest use was to bind marriages.
7. The DRC is among the most resource-rich countries on the planet, with an abundance of gold, tantalum, tungsten, and tin – all minerals used in electronics such as cell phones and laptops – yet it continues to have an extremely poor population. Tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold have been dubbed “conflict minerals.” Armed groups use the profits from sales for campaigns of violence.

Kinshasa is normally one of Africa's busiest, most bustling even chaotic cities.
But on the streets of the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital barely anything moved on Wednesday.
Shopes closed and public transport ground to a halt.
A nationwide strike was called for by the country's main opposition group following the annoucement that presidential elections will take place in April 2018, instead of next month when they were due.
Critics of President Joseph Kabila say he's using the delay to extend his 15 year long rule, and in so doing, violating the constitution.
But President Kabila's government has claimed the election must be postponed so they can properly prepare.
So, is this African country sliding into a crisis?

Their faith in the country has plummeted; as one victim says, "our army has looted and raped their own people. Our life in Congo has no meaning".
