In a wide-ranging new interview with the BBC, Paul McCartney looked back on the post-Beatles depression that led to him forming Wings — and offered a candid assessment of the group’s skill level when they came together.
“I was depressed. You would be. You were breaking from your lifelong friends,” said McCartney (via the Guardian). That depression, he admitted, led to a period of heavy drinking. “It was great at first, then suddenly I wasn’t having a good time,” he recalled. “I wanted to get back to square one, so I ended up forming Wings.”
That “square one,” in McCartney’s eyes, meant avoiding the opportunity to enlist big-name musicians. Wanting to feel like part of a real band again, he sought out less established players — perhaps to a fault. “We were terrible. We knew Linda couldn’t play, but she learned, and looking back on it, I’m really glad we did it,” he said. “I could have just formed a supergroup, and rung up Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and John Bonham.”
McCartney’s memories, as it turns out, also extend to the reviews he’s received over the years — particularly the bad ones. “You still remember the names of the people who gave you really bad, vicious reviews,” he said, half-jokingly singling out longtime NME writer Charles Shaar Murray — who described Wings’ 1975 effort Venus and Mars as “terrible” and “one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard from a so-called ‘major artist'” — as someone who “shall ever be hated.”

Denny Laine (born Brian Frederick Hines, 29 October 1944) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and guitarist. He was an original member of the Moody Blues, singing the band's first hit "Go Now" in 1964, and was a member of Wings with Paul McCartney from 1971 to 1981.
Biography
Early years
Laine was born in Birmingham, where he attended Yardley Grammar School, and took up the guitar as a boy under the influence of gypsy jazz (jazz manouche) legend Django Reinhardt; he gave his first solo performance as a musician at the age of 12 and began his career as a professional musician fronting Denny Laine & the Diplomats, which also included future Move and Electric Light Orchestra drummer Bev Bevan.

The Moody Blues
In 1964, Laine left the Diplomats to join Mike Pinder in the Moody Blues and sang the group's first big hit, "Go Now"; other early highlights included I Don't Want To Go on Without You, another UK hit, plus two minor UK chart hits "From The Bottom of My Heart ( I Love You)", Everyday (both written by Laine and Pinder), "Can't Nobody Love You" and the harmonica-ripping "Bye Bye Bird" (a big hit in France). A self-titled EP and 'The Magnificent Moodies' LP on Decca followed. Laine and Pinder wrote most of The Moody Blues 'B' sides during the 1965-66 period, such as You Don't (All the Time), And My Baby's Gone and This Is My House. However, Laine's tenure with the MB's was relatively short-lived and, after a number of comparative chart failures, Laine quit the band in October 1966. The last record issued by the Moody Blues that featured Laine was "Life's Not Life"/"He Can Win" in January 1967, just after Justin Hayward had replaced him in the band.

Band on the Run
Band on the Run is the third studio album by Paul McCartney and Wings, released in December 1973. It marked the fifth album by Paul McCartney since his departure from the Beatles in April 1970. Although sales were modest initially, its commercial performance was aided by two hit singles – "Jet" and "Band on the Run" – such that it became the top-selling studio album of 1974 in the United Kingdom and Australia, in addition to revitalising McCartney's critical standing. It remains McCartney's most successful album and the most celebrated of his post-Beatles works.
The majority of Band on the Run was recorded at EMI's studio in Lagos, Nigeria, as McCartney wanted to make an album in an exotic locale. Shortly before departing for Lagos, however, drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough left the group; with no time to recruit replacements, McCartney went into the studio with just his wife Linda and Denny Laine, doubling on drums, percussion and most of the lead guitar parts himself as well as bass. On arriving, it was discovered that the studio was below standard, and conditions in Nigeria were tense and difficult; the McCartneys were robbed at knife-point, during which a bag containing unfinished song lyrics and demo tapes was taken. After the band's return to England, final overdubs and further recording were carried out at AIR Studios in London.

Don't Mind
"Don't Mind" is a song by American recording artist Mary J. Blige, from her tenth studio album, My Life II... The Journey Continues (Act 1) (2011). It was written by Blige along with Priscilla Renea and Jerry Duplessis, while production helmed by the latter. The song was released as the album's fourth and final single on June 19, 2012 in the United States, where it reached number 35 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart.
Background
"Don't Mind" was written by Blige, Priscilla Renea and Jerry Duplessis. Production on the track was also handled by Duplessis under his pseudonym Wonda. Blige's vocals were recorded by Serge "Sergical" Tsai, while Jaycen Joshua mixed the track.
An alternate version, "The Crispy Chicken Song", was featured in Blige's ad for Burger King over which the she sings the praises of the Crispy Chicken Snack Wrap. The commercial drew a backlash from fans, who complained that the content was playing into African-American stereotypes, and the fast-food chain quickly pulled the commercial, citing music licensing issues. Blige responded by claiming the final version that was shown on TV was not what she signed up for, stating that she "would never just bust out singing about chicken and chicken wings," adding: "It hurt my feelings and crushed me for two days." The fast food restaurant chain soon after issued a public apologize to Blige and later pulled the ad.

“I was depressed. You would be. You were breaking from your lifelong friends,” said McCartney (via the Guardian). That depression, he admitted, led to a period of heavy drinking. “It was great at first, then suddenly I wasn’t having a good time,” he recalled. “I wanted to get back to square one, so I ended up forming Wings.”

McCartney’s memories, as it turns out, also extend to the reviews he’s received over the years — particularly the bad ones. “You still remember the names of the people who gave you really bad, vicious reviews,” he said, half-jokingly singling out longtime NME writer Charles Shaar Murray — who described Wings’ 1975 effort Venus and Mars as “terrible” and “one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard from a so-called ‘major artist'” — as someone who “shall ever be hated.”

In a wide-ranging new interview with the BBC, Paul McCartney looked back on the post-Beatles depression that led to him forming Wings — and offered a candid assessment of the group’s skill level when they came together.
“I was depressed. You would be. You were breaking from your lifelong friends,” said McCartney (via the Guardian). That depression, he admitted, led to a period of heavy drinking. “It was great at first, then suddenly I wasn’t having a good time,” he recalled. “I wanted to get back to square one, so I ended up forming Wings.”
That “square one,” in McCartney’s eyes, meant avoiding the opportunity to enlist big-name musicians. Wanting to feel like part of a real band again, he sought out less established players — perhaps to a fault. “We were terrible. We knew Linda couldn’t play, but she learned, and looking back on it, I’m really glad we did it,” he said. “I could have just formed a supergroup, and rung up Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page and John Bonham.”
McCartney’s memories, as it turns out, also extend to the reviews he’s received over the years — particularly the bad ones. “You still remember the names of the people who gave you really bad, vicious reviews,” he said, half-jokingly singling out longtime NME writer Charles Shaar Murray — who described Wings’ 1975 effort Venus and Mars as “terrible” and “one of the worst albums I’ve ever heard from a so-called ‘major artist'” — as someone who “shall ever be hated.”

Denny Laine is an English songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, guitarist; lead singer on The Moody Blues' 1965 debut album The Magnificent Moodies; and, later, best known for his role as co-founder (with Paul and Linda McCartney) of Wings. After leaving the Moody Blues in early October 1966, he formed the Electric String Band in December 1966, which featured himself on guitar and vocals, Trevor Burton (another former member of The Move) on guitar, Viv Prince on drums, and electrified strings in a format not dissimilar to what Electric Light Orchestra would later attempt. Laine and Burton then went on to the band Balls from February 1969 until the band's breakup in 1971, with both also taking time to play in Ginger Baker's Air Force in 1970.
In 1971, Laine joined Paul McCartney to found Wings, and stayed with them for a full ten years until they officially disbanded in 1981. Laine provided lead and rhythm guitars, lead and backing vocals, keyboards, bass guitar, and woodwinds, as well as writing or co-writing some of their material. Together with Paul and his wife, Linda, they formed the nucleus of the band, being called that "strange, 3-winged beast". It was with Wings that Laine enjoyed the biggest commercial and critical successes of his career, including co-writing the smash hit "Mull of Kintyre".

The presentation that follows is an addendum to the recent Paul Is Dead discussion I had with Sofia Smallstorm.
I received a number of emails regarding Bill Shepherd’s last name being Campbell and not Shepherd along with questions about Phil Akrill who played with Denny Laine in a band known as The Diplomats in the early 1960s.
In this video I will address those questions along with presenting a recent interview of Denny Laine where he adds another piece to the puzzle confirming that William Shepherd is indeed Paul McCartney.
I highly recommend anyone interested in the Paul Is Dead topic read the book “The Memoirs of Billy Shears”. The book leaves very few stones unturned and will answer many of the questions researchers have been asking for 50 years.
