Downing Street in London, England, has for more than three hundred years housed the official residences of two of the most senior British Cabinet ministers: the First Lord of the Treasury, an office now synonymous with that of Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; and the Second Lord of the Treasury, an office held by the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The Prime Minister's official residence is 10 Downing Street; the Chancellor's official residence is next door at Number 11. The Government's Chief Whip has an official residence at Number 12, though the current Chief Whip's residence is at Number 9.
Downing Street is located in Whitehall in central London, a few minutes' walk from the Houses of Parliament and a little farther from Buckingham Palace. The street was built in the 1680s by Sir George Downing (1632–1689), on the site of a mansion called Hampden House. The houses on the south side of the street were demolished in the nineteenth century to make way for government offices, now occupied by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. "Downing Street" is often used as a metonym for the Government of the United Kingdom.
10 Downing Street, colloquially known in the United Kingdom as "Number 10", is the headquarters of the executive branch of the British Government and the official residence and office of the First Lord of the Treasury, a post which, for much of the 18th and 19th centuries and ever since 1905, is also held by the Prime Minister.
Situated in Downing Street in the City of Westminster, London, Number 10 is over three hundred years old and contains approximately one hundred rooms. There is a private residence on the third floor and a kitchen in the basement. The other floors contain offices and conference, reception, sitting and dining rooms where the Prime Minister works, and where government ministers, national leaders and foreign dignitaries are met and entertained. There is an interior courtyard and, in the back, a terrace overlooking a garden of 0.5 acres (2,000 m2). Adjacent to St. James's Park, Number 10 is near to Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the British monarch, and the Palace of Westminster, the meeting place of both houses of parliament.
David William Donald Cameron (/ˈkæmᵊrən/; born 9 October 1966) is an English politician who has served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom since 2010, as Leader of the Conservative Party since 2005 and as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Witney since 2001.
Cameron studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) at Brasenose College, Oxford. He then joined the Conservative Research Department and became special adviser, first to Norman Lamont and then to Michael Howard. He was Director of Corporate Affairs at Carlton Communications for seven years. Cameron first stood for Parliament in Stafford in 1997. He ran on a Eurosceptic platform, breaking with his party's then-policy by opposing British membership of the single European currency, and was defeated by a swing close to the national average. He was first elected to Parliament in the 2001 general election for the Oxfordshire constituency of Witney. He was promoted to the Opposition front bench two years later and rose rapidly to become head of policy co-ordination during the 2005 general election campaign. With a public image of a youthful, moderate candidate who would appeal to young voters, he won the Conservative leadership election in 2005.
A prime minister is the most senior minister of cabinet in the executive branch of government, often in a parliamentary or semi-presidential system. In many systems, the prime minister selects and may dismiss other members of the cabinet, and allocates posts to members within the government. In most systems, the prime minister is the presiding member and chairman of the cabinet. In a minority of systems, notably in semi-presidential systems of government, a prime minister is the official who is appointed to manage the civil service and execute the directives of the head of state.
In parliamentary systems fashioned after the Westminster system, the prime minister is the presiding and actual head of government and head of the executive branch. In such systems, the head of state or the head of state's official representative (i.e. the monarch, president, or governor-general) usually holds a largely ceremonial position, although often with reserve powers.
The prime minister is often, but not always, a member of parliament and is expected with other ministers to ensure the passage of bills through the legislature. In some monarchies the monarch may also exercise executive powers (known as the royal prerogative) that are constitutionally vested in the crown and may be exercised without the approval of parliament.
A street is a public thoroughfare (usually paved) in a built environment. It is a public parcel of land adjoining buildings in an urban context, on which people may freely assemble, interact, and move about. A street can be as simple as a level patch of dirt, but is more often paved with a hard, durable surface such as concrete, cobblestone or brick. Portions may also be smoothed with asphalt, embedded with rails, or otherwise prepared to accommodate non-pedestrian traffic.
Originally the word "street" simply meant a paved road (Latin: "via strata"). The word "street" is still sometimes used colloquially as a synonym for "road", for example in connection with the ancient Watling Street, but city residents and urban planners draw a crucial modern distinction: a road's main function is transportation, while streets facilitate public interaction. Examples of streets include pedestrian streets, alleys, and city-centre streets too crowded for road vehicles to pass. Conversely, highways and motorways are types of roads, but few would refer to them as streets.

There is hardly a vacation without a stroll along the tower bridge. The typical sightseeing tours also drive you by Downing Street, Big Ben - which is actually called 'Elizabeth Tower' - and London Eye. I haven't been on the Ferris Wheel 'London Eye', but I can give you a good piece of advice. In case you wanna be flashed by a lot of British stuff, goods and amazing food stuff, you definitely should go to Harrods. If you cannot afford elaborated robes and dresses let me tell you: there is stuff for everyone. If you are then still not tired of shopping, then go to 'Selfridges'. That is another extensive huge department store of London. I actually like it more than Harrods because it is more down to earth. Harrods is a real institution with its own spirit - a traditional hotspot for all th...

From here we pass Admiralty Arch which stands at one end of The Mall, at the other end of which is Buckingham Palace, and head south along Whitehall, to Royal Horse Guards. Here Katy watches the Changing of the Guards, which has been carried out at the same time each day for the last one hundred years by the Royal order of Queen Victoria. Protesters are due to march on Downing Street in London on Saturday, June 10, rallying against the UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s proposed alliance with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). May was forced the seek backing from the hard-right Northern Irish party after the Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in the 2017 UK general election earlier in the week. May has expressed her intention to remain as UK prime minister with the help of the DUP, despite calls from both the opposition and members of her own party for her to step down. The UK leader has been heavily criticised for allowing the Tory’s to lose seats to Labour, whose popularity surged in the election, in what was expected to be a landslide victory for the Conservatives. Many voters in the UK have...
Watch Theresa May's statement live from outside 10 Downing Street.
Protesters are gathering outside London’s Downing Street, the official resident of UK Prime Minister Theresa May, on Friday, June 9, to demonstrate against the Conservative Party and demand May’s resignation. According to protesters, the Conservative Party has no mandate to remain in power following Thursday’s UK General Election, where, despite coming out ahead, they fell short of achieving the 326 seats needed to form a majority government. May has expressed her intention to remain in power, with the help of a coalition with the Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party. A decision should be reached by June 13, when the House of Commons is due to reconvene. White supremacist protesters and supporters of Joshua Bonehill-Paine are set to take to Downing Street in London on Saturday, July 4, to demonstrate against what they perceive as the ‘Jewification’ of the UK. They are expected to be met by antifa activists who are holding their own counter-demonstration. Initially, the anti-Semitic demonstration was going to be held in Golders Green, an area that is made up of around 40 percent of people who are of Jewish descent. However, a police intervention means that the rally will be held on Downing Street with an hour limit also reportedly in place. Bonehill-Paine has called on followers to being their own Israeli flags in order to ‘dismember them by hand.’ Bonehill-Paine was arrested by the Metropolitan Police, working with Somerset Police on Jun...
