The Backwaters of Alappuzha (Alleppey) is located in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is a popular tourist destination where people spend a day or two in houseboats and enjoy the pristine natural beauty. Aleppey is considered to be the oldest city of Kerala and is often known as the "Venice Of The East". The reason for this name is of course, due to so much interconnecting water "highways" and the number of boats. There are thousands of boats in Alappuzha and they come in all sizes.
The backwaters of Kerala are a chain of lagoons, and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian sea coast. The backwaters consist of 5 large lakes linked by canals and fed by 38 different rivers. This forms almost 560 miles of waterways, spanning to almost half of Kerala. Such a vast waterway network is convenient for tourists to travel in houseboats, while conveniently wining and dining.

Alleppey Houseboats are very popular and preferred by tourists who visit Kerala. Tourists from all over the world come here to spend a day or two relaxing at these house boats. Alleppey aka Alappuzha is perfect for backwater cruise as it is filled with lagoons, beaches, bridges and beautiful coconut & banana trees.
The video shows many Kerala houseboats while sailing and in docked positions and I have also shown you the inside of the house boat. Most houseboats are comfortable, but lack the luxury of a typical star hotel. However, it is a different and exciting experience to spend a day in these houseboats.
I will post a vlog on how to do an Alleppey houseboat trip soon, so you can learn from my mistakes :)

Our stay in Alleppey or Alappuzha is coming to an end! But not before we visit the Secret Beach in Alleppey which...is its actual name! Hahah it was recommended to us by a local. After searching online I found out it's just a strip of the Alappuzha beach where there's actually shade.
There was no one around, the sand was soft, and water perfect temperature for a dip. Although you guessed it - Alappuzha beach was hot!
Worth checking out for an afternoon nap heh.

Cruise through Alleppey backwaters on a 3 day, 2 night Kerala houseboat tour. The Kerala boat house package is one of the must-dos in India. We got charged way overpriced for this tour package but know that average is 10-15,000 rupees!
On the houseboat it should include rooms, hosts, toilet amenities, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and tea/snacks in between.
I know there are Alleppey day tours available but we opted for the longer package to really take in the scenery. The scenery of Kerala was BEAUTIFUL! Did not disappoint!

Alappuzha
Alappuzha (
pronunciation ), also known as Alleppey, is the administrative headquarters of Alappuzha District of Kerala state of southern India. Alappuzha is the sixth largest city in Kerala with an urban population of 177,029. Alappuzha is considered to be the oldest planned city in this region and the lighthouse built on the coast of the city is the first of its kind along the Arabian Sea coast (reference encyclopaedia of Kerala in Malayalam language).
Alappuzha is situated 62 kilometres (39 mi) to the south of Kochi and 155 kilometres (96 mi) north of Trivandrum. A city with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches, and lagoons, it was described as the one of the places known as the "Venice of the East" by Lord Curzon. Hence, it is known as the "Venetian Capital" of Kerala. Malayalam is the most spoken language. Hindi, English and Tamil are also spoken in the city.
Alappuzha is an important tourist destination in India. The Backwaters of Alappuzha are the most popular tourist attraction in Kerala. A houseboat cruise in these backwaters can be booked. It connects Kumarakom and Cochin to the North and Quilon to the South.

Kerala
Kerala (/ˈkɛrələ/), historically known as Keralam, is a state in South India on the Malabar coast. It was formed on 1 November 1956 following the States Reorganisation Act by combining Malayalam-speaking regions. Spread over 38,863 km2 (15,005 sq mi), it is bordered by Karnataka to the north and northeast, Tamil Nadu to the east and south, and the Lakshadweep Sea to the west. With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the 2011 Census, Kerala is the thirteenth largest state by population and is divided into 14 districts with the capital being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken and the official language of the state.
The region was a prominent spice exporter since 3000 BCE. The Chera Dynasty was the first prominent kingdom based in Kerala, though it frequently struggled against attacks by the neighbouring Cholas and Pandyas. In the 15th century, the spice trade attracted Portuguese traders to Kerala, and paved the way for the European colonisation of India. After independence, Travancore and Cochin joined the Republic of India and Travancore-Cochin was given the status of a state in 1949. In 1956, Kerala state was formed by merging Malabar district, Travancore-Cochin (excluding four southern taluks), and the taluk of Kasargod, South Kanara.

Cruise through Alleppey backwaters on a 3 day, 2 night Kerala houseboat tour. The Kerala boat house package is one of the must-dos in India. We got charged way overpriced for this tour package but know that average is 10-15,000 rupees!
On the houseboat it should include rooms, hosts, toilet amenities, food (breakfast, lunch, dinner), and tea/snacks in between.
I know there are Alleppey day tours available but we opted for the longer package to really take in the scenery. The scenery of Kerala was BEAUTIFUL! Did not disappoint!
