Vlach, also know as Aromanian, is spoken by 250,000 people across eastern Europe — in particular Romania, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Turkey — with varying degrees of political recognition. An Eastern Romance language, Vlach shares many similarities with the Romanian, Istro-Romanian, and Megleno-Romanian languages. It has been documented since at least the 1770s, when the Aromanian scholar Daniel Moscopolites published a multilingual dictionary translating his mother tongue into Greek, Albanian, and Bulgarian. Culturally, Vlach speakers tend to identify eponymously ('Vlachs') or as 'Aromanians'.

In Serbia, Vlach magic - the spiritual rituals of the Vlach people - has been linked to mass killings and crimes of passion by the Serbian media. Galeb Nikacevic went to some of the most remote villages in Eastern Serbia to take part in Vlach magic rituals and discern truth from sensationalism.

Folk Music of the Aromanian People
The Aromanians are an ethnic group native to the southern Balkans, traditionally living in northern and central Greece, central and southern Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, and south-western Bulgaria. Especially in Greece, the term Vlachs is widespread, but this term is internationally used to encompass all Romance-speaking peoples of the Balkans and Tatra Mountains regions, including the modern-day Romanians. "Vlach" is a blanket term covering several modern peoples descending from the Latinized population of the Balkans and Central-Eastern Europe.The Aromanians speak the Aromanian language, a Latin-derived language similar to Romanian, which has many slightly varying dialects of its own. It descends from the Vulgar Latin spoken by the Paleo-Balkan peoples subsequent to their Romanization. It is a mix of domestic and Latin language with additional influences from other surrounding languages of the Balkans, such as Bulgarian, Greek, Macedonian, and Albanian.
Due to the association of Vlachs and sheep-herding, since the Middle Ages their ethnonym has come to mean "shepherd" in some Balkan and Central European languages.During the Middle Ages, many Vlachs were shepherds who drove their flocks through the mountains of southeastern Europe. Vlach shepherds reached as far north as southern Poland (Podhale) and the eastern Czech Republic (Moravia) by following the Carpathians, the Dinaric Alps in the west, the Pindus Mountains in the south and the Caucasus Mountains in the east. Vlachs have been called "the perfect Balkan citizens" because they are "able to preserve their culture without resorting to war or politics, violence or dishonesty."

This video is from a documentary about the people from Namata in the Kozani region in Macedonia. Namata is a mountain village where the villagers go in the summers to care for their livestock and was chosen for the documentary because they still practice many traditions.
The video shows the lead dancer doing many variations. In Greek dances, when the leader is "showing off", the rest of the line just stands in place. The lead position in a dance is therefore one of importance, where important is relative to the occasion. For weddings, important is how close you are to the bride and groom. For a saint day celebration, it may be granted to someone who was named after the saint. Otherwise, the lead position is bought by paying the band.
Even though we don't see much of the actual dance, it is evidently a Tsamikos. Notice that it starts with the left foot - this is typical of Vlach Tsamiko.

Vlachs
Vlachs (English pronunciation: /ˈvlɑːk/ or /ˈvlæk/) is a historical term used for Eastern Romance-speaking peoples in the Balkans and Eastern Europe; several modern peoples descending from the Romanized population in present-day Romania and Moldova, the southern Balkan Peninsula and south and west of the Danube. They were identified during the 11th century (when they were described by George Kedrenos), and their prehistory during the Migration Period is a matter of scholarly speculation. According to one origin theory, the Vlachs originated from Latinized Dacians. According to some linguists and scholars, the Eastern Romance languages prove the survival of the Thraco-Romans in the lower Danube basin during the Migration Period and western Balkan populations known as "Vlachs" also have had Romanized Illyrian origins. Nearly all central- and southeastern European nations (Hungary, Ukraine, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Albania, Greece and Bulgaria) have native Vlach (or Romanian) minorities; in other countries, the Vlachs have assimilated to the Slavic population. The term was also commonly used for shepherds. Today, the Eastern Romance-speaking communities number 24,187,810 people.

Karel Vlach
Karel Vlach (October 8, 1911 (Prague) – February 26, 1986 (Prague)) was a Czech dance orchestra conductor and arranger.
He founded his first orchestra in 1938. Many important composers, instrumentalists and arrangers of the Czech jazz scene gradually went through his band. In 1947-48 Vlach's orchestra cooperated with the V+W Theatre (former Osvobozené divadlo). He recorded prolifically with Supraphon and his output includes both light classical and orchestral as well as jazz and pop arrangements for big band with strings. He also arranged and conducted many Czech film scores from 1940 to 1980. He launched the singing careers of Czech artists Yvetta Simonová (whom he married) and Milan Chladil in 1958. He and his musical colleagues Dalibor Brazda and Gustav Brom also arranged and recorded many titles for British singer Gery Scott in the late 1950s, mostly from what is now termed the American Songbook series. Many of these titles are now collectors items.

I've always been very interested in the Vlach culture. The Vlachs are a minority group who reside in the eastern part of Serbia. They are the majority in many towns like Kucevo, Majdanpek, Donji Milanovac, etc. They have a different language which has some similarities to Romanian. They are also known to believe and practice in magic. That isn't the case in today's society, but many of the old women in small villages still do. One of the students from our Work and Travel Group program, Marko Radojkovic, spent 5 months in the US this year. He invited me over to his families home in Majdanpek so I decided to go. His mother's family is Vlach so I was able to experience a lot of their culture, food and hear some of their language. It was amazing. They treated me like one of the family. They were able to contact the local tourist organization so they could open the beautiful, Rajko's Cave, for a private viewing. We also trudged through the forests to explore the surrounding area. Majdanpek is truly beautiful! -

Namata is a mountain village where the villagers go in the summers to care for their livestock and was chosen for the documentary because they still practice many traditions. The video shows the lead dancer doing many variations. In Greek dances, when the leader is "showing off", the rest of the line just stands in place. Adventure in Majdanpek, Serbia..... Vlach Country
I've always been very interested in the Vlach culture. The Vlachs are a minority group who reside in the eastern part of Serbia. They are the majority in many towns like Kucevo, Majdanpek, Donji Milanovac, etc. They have a different language which has some similarities to Romanian. They are also known to believe and practice in magic. That isn't the case in today's society, but many of the old women in small villages still do. One of the students from our Work and Travel Group program, Marko Radojkovic, spent 5 months in the US this year. He invited me over to his families home in Majdanpek so I decided to go. His mother's family is Vlach so I was able to experience a lot of their culture, food and hear some of their language. It was amazing. They treated me like one of the family. They w...

Vlach shepherds reached as far north as southern Poland (Podhale) and the eastern Czech Republic (Moravia) by following the Carpathians, the Dinaric Alps in the west, the Pindus Mountains in the south and the Caucasus Mountains in the east. Vlachs have been called "the perfect Balkan citizens" because they are "able to preserve their culture without resorting to war or politics, violence or dishonesty."

This video is from a documentary about the people from Namata in the Kozani region in Macedonia. Namata is a mountain village where the villagers go in the summers to care for their livestock and was chosen for the documentary because they still practice many traditions.
The video shows the lead dancer doing many variations. In Greek dances, when the leader is "showing off", the rest of the line just stands in place. The lead position in a dance is therefore one of importance, where important is relative to the occasion. For weddings, important is how close you are to the bride and groom. For a saint day celebration, it may be granted to someone who was named after the saint. Otherwise, the lead position is bought by paying the band.
Even though we don't see much of the actual dance, it is evidently a Tsamikos. Notice that it starts with the left foot - this is typical of Vlach Tsamiko.

I've always been very interested in the Vlach culture. The Vlachs are a minority group who reside in the eastern part of Serbia. They are the majority in many towns like Kucevo, Majdanpek, Donji Milanovac, etc. They have a different language which has some similarities to Romanian. They are also known to believe and practice in magic. That isn't the case in today's society, but many of the old women in small villages still do. One of the students from our Work and Travel Group program, Marko Radojkovic, spent 5 months in the US this year. He invited me over to his families home in Majdanpek so I decided to go. His mother's family is Vlach so I was able to experience a lot of their culture, food and hear some of their language. It was amazing. They treated me like one of the family. They were able to contact the local tourist organization so they could open the beautiful, Rajko's Cave, for a private viewing. We also trudged through the forests to explore the surrounding area. Majdanpek is truly beautiful!
