The International Phonetic Alphabet (unofficially—though commonly—abbreviated IPA) is an alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It was devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of oral language. The IPA is used by lexicographers, foreign language students and teachers, linguists, speech-language pathologists, singers, actors, constructed language creators, and translators.
The IPA is designed to represent only those qualities of speech that are part of oral language: phones, phonemes, intonation, and the separation of words and syllables. To represent additional qualities of speech, such as tooth gnashing, lisping, and sounds made with a cleft palate, an extended set of symbols called the Extensions to the International Phonetic Alphabet may be used.
IPA symbols are composed of one or more elements of two basic types, letters and diacritics. For example, the sound of the English letter ⟨t⟩ may be transcribed in IPA with a single letter, [t], or with a letter plus diacritics, [t̺ʰ], depending on how precise one wishes to be. Often, slashes are used to signal broad or phonemic transcription; thus, /t/ is less specific than, and could refer to, either [t̺ʰ] or [t], depending on the context and language.
British English is the English language as spoken and written in Great Britain or, more broadly, throughout the British Isles. Slight regional variations exist in formal, written English in the United Kingdom. For example, the adjective wee is almost exclusively used in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, whereas little is predominant elsewhere. Nevertheless, there is a meaningful degree of uniformity in written English within the United Kingdom, and this could be described by the term British English. The forms of spoken English, however, vary considerably more than in most other areas of the world where English is spoken, so a uniform concept of British English is more difficult to apply to the spoken language. According to Tom McArthur in the Oxford Guide to World English, British English shares "all the ambiguities and tensions in the word British and as a result can be used and interpreted in two ways, more broadly or more narrowly, within a range of blurring and ambiguity."

This lesson explains the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and how it can help with English pronunciation. I start the lesson by defining the International Phonetic Alphabet and showing why it is so useful. The letters of a word don't help us in knowing how to pronounce it because the same letter can have lots of different sounds in different words. For example, the letter "c" has a very different sound in the word "car" compared to the letter "c" in the word "dice". Also the same phonetic sound can be produced by lots of different combinations of letters. The IPA is a system for representing each phonetic sound with a symbol and we use use these symbols to transcribe the correct pronunciation of a word. In the English language, there are 44 phonetic symbols and sounds made up of vow...

British English at http://Britlish.com More lessons at http://linguaspectrum.com This is the British English phonetic chart. It is the chart that I will be using in these videos. It is also called the IPA chart. IPA is an acronym for the International Phonetic Alphabet. The symbols in the chart were developed by the International Phonetic Association as the standardized way of representing the sounds of spoken language. The full IPA chart has over 160 symbols representing all of the distinct sounds of all the world's languages. Our British English IPA chart uses forty-four of the IPA symbols. Each symbol in the chart represents a distinct sound in English. It is important that you can distinguish between each of the different sounds on the chart and that you can accurately reproduce them...

Greene King has been brewing fine quality ales since 1799, and after more than 200 years, the business of making beer becomes an intuitive craft. To dramatise this and promote the IPA brand, it has collaborated with legendary improvisational percussionist Steve Noble, AKA King Snare. Noble is undisputed drumming royalty on the alternative Jazz scene. In a two-minute film created by Grey London, Noble performs a mesmerizing, unrehearsed freestyle drum solo; every single one of the beats fine-tuned in hundreds of late night jazz clubs over the past 50 years. Shot by up-and-coming young British Director George Belfield, it was filmed in a single take, without any sheet music and features Noble’s 40-year-old drum kit which has travelled around the world with him.

As tempting for hop-heads as for the ones who love them, this well-balanced citrusy IPA gets its bitterness from Columbus hops and its fragrant citrus aroma from Cascade hops. I had a rare day off from work, so I brewed a replica of a Dogfish 60 minute IPA. The music is a combination of the VoiceKeyboard iPad app and ujam. I hummed Nick Drake's Bryter Layter song into ujam.

playing all alone just to touch with you
