Cyclist clashes with Sydney Road motorist

A public clash in Brunswick involving a cyclist hurling abuse at a female driver has sparked debate about proportional responses to cyclist safety.

The police are now investigating complaints against both the cyclist and driver.

The cyclist is seen kicking the woman's car while swearing at her. However, he says he acted in "self-defence" because "cyclists are injured daily by dangerous drivers".

The footage was filmed using a camera attached to the cyclist's helmet as he rode down Sydney Road, Brunswick at 1.15pm on Saturday.

It appears to show the woman's Toyota Yaris drive out in front of him from a parking space while she's on her phone.

"Hey look, f---wit, get off your f---ing phone," the cyclists yells.

"Get off your f---ing phone," he continues to scream before kicking the bonnet of the silver hatchback, while a small child sits in the back seat.

A male witnesses tells him  to "settle down" as the cyclist yells for people to call the police.

"You're on your phone, which is illegal while you're driving. I'm filming you, I'm filming you," the cyclists yells at the woman.

"I've reported you to the police. You're a dangerous driver, you f---ing moron."

The woman tells him her car was stopped.

"She could've killed me," the cyclist tells shocked witnesses attempting to calm him down.

"You've got a number of witnesses who just witnessed you kicking the front of an old woman's car and yelling in her face," one witness says.

The cyclist replies: "It's self-defence. I want her arrested."

In another video, posted on YouTube, the cyclist admits to police he kicked the car, after which a man in a baseball cap asks him why he did it.

Before the cyclist can answer, the man says: "Shut the f--- up c---."

The cyclist tells the man in the cap he is being recorded, to which he replies: "F--- you and your recorder."

The police officer tells the cyclist to move down the street.

"I'm the victim here," he says. "I'm recording you too."

The police officer is the same one who was shot in the face with a shotgun in Moonee Ponds in July, 2015.

In a blog posted on website Fitzroyalty, the cyclist said he uses the camera to record "selfish negligent criminal drivers [that] try to kill me".

"I'm sick of having to be hyper vigilant to protect myself from complacent morons and their sense of entitlement and belief that they are so special that the law does not apply to them," he wrote.

Commenters to the blog post told him he "overreacted".

The police confirmed they spoke to the cyclist and driver and both complaints were being investigated.
