WELCOME TO MSLEXIA
Issue 74 is a sumptuous feast of Summer inspiration!
We’re proud to present the winners and runners-up of the Mslexia Short Story competition and the inaugural Mslexia Flash Fiction competition, as judged by Deborah Levy and Kit de Waal – as well as the usual poetry, flash fiction and creative non-fiction from our own Mslexia readers. However long you have for your tea break, you’ll be able to fit in at least one of these beautifully written tales, so grab your deckchair and a cool lemonade, get comfy, and settle down to writing that will make you laugh, cry and shudder.
As always, the magazine is packed with information and techniques you can apply to your own writing. Editor Debbie Taylor examines what makes bestsellers so addictive, Lucy English looks at the ever-expanding world of spoken-word performance, and Fanny Blake explains how best to pitch to women’s magazines. Having difficulty finding your voice? Take a look at Claire Wingfield’s advice on how to keep writing when you, er, aren’t. Caroline Sanderson interviews non-fiction superstar
Kate Summerscale, and Flash Fiction judge Kit de Waal talks to Danuta Kean about her own publishing journey.
Circle the comps, submission slots and events in our extensive listings and insights section; start writing the songs for your musical; and check out what agent Laura Williams dreams of finding in her inbox – and how to pitch a feature to online feminist magazine The F Word. Or get your debit card out in preparation for the wealth of wonderful books available in our Out Now section. All this and much, much more.
Want to see yourself in the pages? Check out ‘submissions’ for information on our next Showcase themes (now with space for the scriptwriters among you), as well as all the usual slots. And remember to get your entries in for the Novel competition, closing on 18th September!
