COMING SOON ON BBE : J Jazz - Deep Modern Jazz from Japan 1969 - 83.

I've been busy working with Tony "Impressed" Higgins putting together a new Japanese Jazz compilation which is being issued by BBE Records in a few months time - J Jazz: deep modern jazz from Japan 1969 - 1983. A collection of some of the finest, rarest and most sought-after modern jazz that saw artists developing new sounds and styles that redefined Japanese jazz. Focusing on prize cuts drawn from private pressings and independent labels, J Jazz will give the listener an insight into a creatively dynamic scene that embraced deep modal, spiritual and impressionistic jazz.
Here's a taster of what's to come with a full force cut from the phenomenal private press rarity that is "Tachibana":

BOSTON CREATIVE JAZZ SCENE 1970 - 1983 CULTURES OF SOUL

Essential listening and reading from Cultures Of Soul this deluxe overview of Boston's creative Jazz scene is released on January 22nd in as a double LP set, packaged in a deluxe box with each piece of vinyl housed in its own Euro-style glossy jacket or as a CD set. Also included is an 80 page book documenting the rich history of the music with in-depth analyses and photos.
Very highly recommended.

In the 1970s Boston was a fertile ground for a very creative jazz scene. Small, independent venues ranging from lofts to churches to clubs opened up to support this thriving backdrop while jazz musicians set up their own labels. One man was there through it all, playing music and documenting the musical landscape. His name was Mark Harvey and here is his story....
Mark Harvey and Deano Sounds pulled together the most comprehensive package of Boston Jazz released to date. The album has been assembled as a deluxe package that includes, in addition to the music, an 80-page book documenting the rich history of this music scene with in-depth analyses and photos of the jazz musicians involved.
The music on this album is culled from rare private press Jazz LPs that were pressed in small quantities of a few hundred for members of the band and the local jazz community at the time. The music here runs the gamut of funky jazz from Arnie Cheatham's "Thing" to the deep free jazz of the Phill Musra Group or the spoken word brilliance of Worlds, to the complex metric structures of Stanton Davis' "Play Sleep." This is a collection of very rare eccentric jazz pieces for your enjoyment!

1. The Mark Harvey Group - For Margot  2. The Mark Harvey Group - Tarot: The Moon 3. Thing - Sketch Pts. 1 & 2 4. Thing - Road Through The Wall Pts. 2 & 3 5. The Phill Musra Group - The Creator Is So Far Out 6. The Phill Musra Group - Egypt 7. Worlds’ - 9 Degrees Black Women Liberation 8. Stanton Davis’ Ghetto Mysticism - Play Sleep 9. Side 2 Recorded August 29th 1967 : As above minus Preben Garnov, Niels Peters and the string section.Add Uffe Karrskov-Clarinet, Flute, Tenor & Baritone Sax; Ole Kurt Jensen-Bass Trombone

Back with a bang ...the first time out in Blogland for this very rare and never reissued Danish session composed and arranged by Palle Mikkelborg.

From the sleeve notes by Erik Moseholm:
Palle Mikkelborg found his inspiration for "The Mysterious Corona"in the aura of the sun.The composition was first heard in it's embryonic stage at a concert at the Danish National Museum in the spring of 1965, performed by Danish composer and pianist Niels Viggo Bentzon, The American sax player and composer Ray Pitts, who has made Denmark his home, drummer Bjarne Rostvold, and this writer tending the bass [Erik Moseholm].The thematic ideas were later adapted by Palle Mikkelborg for his nonet, and parts of the suite were incorporated in the book of the Jazz Group of the Danish Radio. The suite was completed in August 1967 for this recording.

Each of the seven parts of the suite was inspired by emotions experienced by reading about the aura of the sun.The discovery of this very phenomenon is the theme for the first part, "Corona". The deep realization of it's infinity and enormous power results in "Overwhelming Emotion, and the beauty of space calls forth "Cosmos".Watching life in space makes the beholder aware of the fact that "Birds Fly" and inspires him in "Religious Feelings". The theories and fantasies about command of the universe expounded by the mystics become "Magic", and the realization of the microscopic smallness of mankind in the face of the immeasurable powers strikes the composer with "Awe".

"Corona", the opening statement, is played by the strings, lead by violinist Orla Jorgensen.Cellist Ib Hermann and bass player N.H.Orsted-Pederson are the soloists. The full 21 man group is heard in "Overwhelming Emotion", with Ray Pitts and Palle Mikkelborg the main protagonists."Cosmos" is introduced by oboist Niels Peters, and the theme is taken up by the winds lead by hornist Preben Garnov.Niels Peters plays the lead in "Birds Fly", and Ray Pitts and Palle Mikkelborg are again heard as soloists. The vibraphone solo is played by Louis Hjulmand. The strings are not used in this section, nor in the following section."Religious Feelings", which is arranged for a wind quintet led by Niels Peters' oboe with Ray Pitts on flute, Bent Nielsen and Jorgen Jensen on clarinets, and Niels Husum on bass clarinet. Torolf Molgaard and Ray Pitts are the solists on "Magic", and the all important tambourine part is in the hands of Bjarne Rostvold. The final section "Awe" is played by a string quartet led by Orla Jorgensen.

The six  part "M.B.Cyclus" is introduced by "Ming", followed by "Short Cart"with solos by Ray Pitts, Palle Mikkelborg and Ole Molin who plays the Spanish guitar.Mikkelborg and Molin paint a picture of "La Mijas", a Moorish village on the Costa Del Sol in Spain where the former spent some time shortly before the recording session took place. A Mongolian tale was the inspiration for "Mongolia", which has solos by Ray Pitts and Torolf Molgaard.Louis Hjulmand is the only soloist in "Beauty M.", and the cyclus comes to a close with "Free Bee".

seriE. WOC : COALITION - BIRTH

Private press rarity scheduled for a limited 250 vinyl reissue from seriE:WOC on July 7th.Very highly recommended.Don't sleep on this one...

Coalition’s single self-produced album, recorded for the private Kenya Records in 1978, presents as many questions as it does offer musical surprises. Not much is known about this groups who were a part of the late 70s Philadelphia jazz-soul scene. The music captured for the LP spans a broad range of styles, ranging from an intense fusion work-out (the album opener, ‘Marionette’), a mellow Terry Callier-esque style ballad (‘Thinking of You’), abstract tonal impressionism (‘Song to my Lady’), Afrocentric Strata East spiritual style jazz (‘Kenya’s Horizon’) and tough blowing hard-bop (‘The Downer’). In some senses, there’s something for everyone, and the bands instrumentation of tenor and flute riding over the solid rhythm section puts the listener in safe hands to enjoy a journey to the unexpected.
Those safe hand include drummer Dwight James. A one-time member of the Sounds of Liberation, a band that included Byard Lancaster, James was a respected and well-regarded drummer around Philly and he appears on a number of deep jazz records including the rare Sounds of Liberation album from 1972. James was also tight with the Khan Jamal Creative Arts Ensemble, appearing on the 1973 psych-jazz album ‘Drum Dance To The Motherland’.
James also recorded his own one and only solo album in 1983 for Cadence Records, ‘Inner Heat’.
The Coalition album was only pressed in small numbers and available at Coalition live shows and local shops and so became quite a collectable piece for dealers and DJs.

seriE. WOC : TORDENSKJOLD SOLDATER - PEACE

Heads up people - this rare piece of tip top Danish jazz is scheduled for a limited 250 vinyl reissue from seriE:WOC on January 25th.Very highly recommended.

Here's some background :
Danish jazz band founded in 1969. Band line up: Henrik Hove on bass, Ole Mathiessen on piano, Jesper Nehammer (later Thors Hammer, Alrune Rod and Entrance) on tenorsax, and Jon Finsen on drums. Played for a while every Monday in the famous Jazzhouse Montmatre in Copenhagen.
Tordenskjolds Soldater only made this record (1970).
The small record label Spectator Records was founded in 1969 by Jørgen Bornefeldt a former journalist from Danmarks Radio in coorporation with the jazz musician Carsten Meinert. Meinert recorded two albums on the label. He only joined the company in the beginning. Cindarellaistudiet The studio was destroyed august 6th 1972 by a major fire. And that was the end of Spectator Records. From 1969 to the end, the label recorded at least 23 lp albums and 9-11 singles/EP's. The picture shows Henning Kragh Pedersen from Cinderella in Spectators studio. The great Danish rock band Gasolin recorded their first single – Silky Sally - on Spectator Records. It was no success and sold only 155 copies. Silky Sally is now one of the most sought after Gasolin singles among collectors and is of course very expensive.
The music from Spectator Records is mostly jazz, progressive rock and hippie free style. But they also made strange records for children, education etc. Most records were issued in very small numbers (300-500). Some of the best progressive rock in Northern Europe was recorded here.
Quality of vinyl was often poor - even new looking records can have audible problems. Covers and labels are primitive and cheap. On the other hand the creativity could be outstanding - check the Furekaaben cover gallery or the artwork of William Skotte Olsen from Green Grass. Several record from the labels are cult today. A perfect copy of certain records costs a fortune.
Master tapes was never found after the fire in 1972. Unofficial reissues and bootlegs are therefore made on the base of the original records. Recordings that never made it to the vinyl got lost in the fire. Both Cinderella and The Copenhagen based band, Lines lyst, had material ready for lp’s which was never recorded.
Personnel:
Jesper Nehammer - tenor saxophone; Ole Mathiessen – piano;
Jon Finsen – drums; Henrik Hove - bass
Recorded on june 16. 1970
Produced by Freddy Hansen
Cover design: Birgit Schmidt
over print: Ballermanns Eftf., Aalborg

Daryl Runswick (b)
Recorded under the personal supervision of Denis Preston at Lansdowne Studios London.
Based on poems by Jill Robin

First time out in blogland for this obscure piece of British jazz - a colossal work that blends jazz, rock and classical music.
The composer writes:
When I first thought of the opening of Zeitgeist I soon discovered that the five notes which comprised it suggested a twelve note row - the remaining seven notes following almost as a matter of course - and it is upon this row that the whole piece is based .It opens with a solitary B- flat high on bass clarinet. This is symbolic of the flower and on the words "take this flower" this same note is joined by one a tone below,"Her Days Are Numbered" being reflected musically by a three note figure based on fourths. After some more spoken lines the speaker Mary Thomas becomes singer introducing a chorale like theme "Ah This World" which is heard in canon.
Soon we are plunged into a most violent section expressive of the dissonance and relentlessness of our industrial age and also symbolic of the vicissitudes of modern life.As the noise fades we find ourselves in a rock section. This introduces Norma Winstone who in the spell of the unyielding and hypnotic rhythm attempts to persuade Mary to "join the dance" Mary resists but Norma, after an improvised solo of seductive persuasiveness, finally wins her over.
Then follows some soliloquising from Mary ending in a plea for help, and this takes us into a duet for trumpet (Henry Lowther) and myself on bass clarinet, in which we utilise the note row as a basis for improvisation and during which the ensemble enters periodically to eat up, so to speak, some of our available notes limiting us to more and more with each entry. On the very last brutal cord of this section we are forced to two high notes from which we subsequently descend to "Brother and Sister" sung by Mary & Norma. This culminates in a drum duet by Trevor Thompson and Frank Riccoti in which there 12 drums are tuned to a note row.An ensemble section which ends on a held note on soprano saxophone brings us to the close of side one.
This last note is picked up by Norma at the commencement of side two and leads into the "Love Song" the bass notes and harmony which derives from the note row.To follow there are solos by Phil Lee (guitar) and Kenny Wheeler (fluglehorn) and then Mary sings an inverted version of the song accompanied by Bob Cornford who lays down his baton for the piano keyboard.
A return to the original version of the "Love Song"  is followed by a cadenza written for Alan Hacker in which he plays canons bringing out different voices thereof by using contrasting registers of the clarinet and ending with one of his celebrated harmonic glissandi which leads into the final section. Here Norma and later Mary sing "We are Together" with solos from myself on soprano saxophone, Henry Lowther, Frank Ricotti, on vibraphone and Phil Lee. The singers then re-enter and the song is gradually undermined by the chorale like theme which starts on 'celli and is canonically treated .This section reaches a climax then there is a disintegration into an atonal passage. The work ends on a solitary note with which it began-a note transformed in meaning now symbolizing not the doomed flower but the eternal spirit of man-in other words a note of hope.
I should like to dedicate this work to memory of Alban Berg.

THE NEW JAZZ ORCHESTRA - LE DEJEUNER SUR L'HERBE

The New Jazz Orchestra for Verve UK  from 1969.

Directed By – Neil Ardley ; Bass – Jack Bruce ; Drums – Jon Hiseman ; Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet – Dave Gelly ; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet – Jim Philip ; Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone – Dick Heckstall-Smith ; Tenor Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Flute – Barbara Thompson ; Trombone – Derek Wadsworth, John Mumford, Michael Gibbs, Tony Russell ; Trumpet – Derek Watkins, Harry Beckett, Henry Lowther ; Trumpet, Flugelhorn – Ian Carr ; Tuba – George Smith ; Vibraphone, Marimba – Frank Ricott ; Producer – Tony Reeves

An absolute monster of an album and an expensive rarity with no reissues in any format. It really does deserve the epithet   All Killer No Filler !
Back in 2008 I posted a (now long gone) low quality rip from a mashed vinyl copy of this at OIR Contributions which was donated by a reader. This time I've used my own clean copy and ripped it to both FLAC and MP3 formats. It's highly unlikely the album will ever see the light of day again due to legal reasons so I thought it worthwhile providing both.

The New Jazz Orchestra, which Neil Ardley directed, was a meeting place for many talented young jazz musicians and composers in Britain in the 1960s. Inspired to some extent by the great American jazz arranger Gil Evans, it consciously styled itself a jazz orchestra, rather than a big band. The NJO had been going for four years when this album was recorded in 1968 and these pieces, the cream of its repertoire, exemplify the maturing craft of its composers and arrangers in developing not only tone colour but also ways of integrating improvisation and composition. They are well served by the orchestra's spirited soloists and spring-heeled rhythm section.

ENZO ZANGAGLIA PRESENTS seriE.WOC : Milt Jackson Sings With The Enrico Intra Group

It's not often I use this blog as platform to promote labels and reissues however here's a guy on a mission who's very worthy of mention the mighty Enzo Zangaglia from Italy. Enzo is about to reissue the tough to find Milt Jackson Sings With The Enrico Intra Group which will be the first in a series of about 10 very rare (and very good!) jazz albums that he's in the process of licensing from the original labels. All of these will be a true labour of love : Enzo's heavyweight vinyls will not be digitally remastered but cleaned up using the analog masters keeping all the merits and “defects” of the original recording and these will be housed in sleeves recreated using original methods and materials (flip back/ paste board/ tip on covers).
Find out more about the man, the music and where to buy it here : http://seriewoc.tumblr.com
Now here's Enzo in his own words:

Unfortunately many of the musical works of the past, for various reasons, may not be more accessible because they are forgotten for many other reasons that from time to time are always different. My job is to restore both sound and image, using methods completely analog. The cover is restored by a specialized laboratory that is involved in restoration of old books and prints. The new cover is constructed taking care of the type of paper used in source and assembled by hand in an old bookbinding where everything is still done as in the 50s and 60s. The inserts pictures in the original version will be restored and added to each reproduced copy. The sound is not remastered, but simply cleaned in an analog manner keeping all the merits and “defects” of the original recording. Then printed on virgin vinyl using old but reliable machines for the press. The same care is given to packaging, covered with dust-proof enclosures in PVC. Everything is MADE IN ITALY, a brand that has always represented excellence of experience, attention to detail, so synonymous with wealth craftsmanship.
E.WOC
It is a play on words, it’s a game, it’s life, it is the desire to find, hear, feel inside,E.WOCate the past in this present so confused and erratic. It’s desire to rediscover, to give value to our “elderly”, to be told their life, their history, which is always exciting genuine, real and unique.
E.WOCate that feeling of unity that led to the birth of the most interesting ensembles of modern art of music.
E.WOC is a project of rediscovery and preservation of the music that has nourished the culture being itself the seed and fruit of culture.
I go around to rediscover what has been lost in the hidden depths of time, that erase everything, find new friends and learn and share with them. Memory is life, hope, future.

MAJOR SURGERY - THE FIRST CUT

Major Surgery for Next UK from 1977.

Tenor Saxophone – Don Weller  ;  Guitar – Jimmy Roche  ; Drums – Tony Marsh  ; Bass Guitar – Bruce Collcutt

First post for 2013 and the first time out in blogland for this obscure privately pressed Don Weller led  session recorded at Virtual Earth in London '77.
Here's a few lines lifted from discogs by ultimathulerecords:
You don't get much quality jazz-rock/fusion from the UK in the mid-late 1970's, as most bands went either too schmaltzy or got too funky, or worse. So this was a surprise. At first I thought maybe Don Weller's sax was a bit too dry, but he cuts it well against the solid rhythm section. Mostly the structure reminds me of German bands of the same era, Morpheus, Munju, Moira, etc. Although there are references to Nucleus and Isotope. A nice one!

I've just returned from a couple of weeks holiday in Cuba which kicked off with a 4 day stay in the spectacular city of Havana. What an incredible place it reverberates with music morning noon and night wherever you are .As well as catching some superb live music I went digging for vinyl in the streets and markets and returned home with a bag of rarities all products of Cuba's Studio Egrem Areito label. Here's a few of the highlights ranging from the nueva trova meets prog meets jazz collision of Emiliano Salvador & Silvio Rodrigues' Grupo De Experimentacion to the strings and disco soundtrack stylings of Raul Gomez to the hard latin jazz of Grupo Afrojazz.

Links are in the comments as per usual. I haven't ripped to FLAC as Rapidshare have a new ruling which means that the public traffic downloaded from my Orgy In Rhythm account has now been limited to 1GB a day. That's why so many of you are getting the following message :
Download not available . The Public Traffic of the file's owner is exhausted.
I'm now looking at how to keep the remaining few hundred files alive and hopefully get them transferred to another host.....what a bastard !
