This is a film from the German television. English subtitles have been added and hopefully would make it comprehensible, but some of the actors are really fast talking with occasional difficulties in hearing them. This film is another version of Vera Caspary's novel "Laura", first filmed by Otto Preminger in 1944.There is another odd TV version of this book already available on this channel. I don't have the copyright of this film and must assume it has expired or could be shown according to Berne convention. It has already been published on You Tube and really only added English subtitles for convenience of a bigger audience.
The reason for uploading this version is that this TV film has two famous actors in the main roles. Laura is played by Hildegard Knef, a great German actress with a extensive career (also as a singer) in German cinema but also a short Hollywood career. You can see her in another German film on this channel but also on You Tube are a few full feature films, "Alraune" and "Sünderin". Of her Hollywood films ,"Snow on Kilimanjaro" as a full feature film is also on You Tube.
Waldo Lydecker is played by the famous Vienesse born actor Adolf Wohlbrück or more known famously outside Austria and Germany, Anton Walbrook. Of his German films the following are available in full feature on You Tube , "Maskerade", "Viktor und Viktoria".He also had a distinguished career in England during the war acting in many of Michael Powell's films. On You Tube the following full feature film "Gas Light"(Many find him even superior to Charles Boyer in the Hollywood version) "49th Parallel", "The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp" .

Anton Walbrook
Anton Walbrook (born Adolf Anton Wilhelm Wohlbrück, 19 November 1896 – 9 August 1967) was an Austrian actor who settled in the United Kingdom.
Life and career
Walbrook was born in Vienna, Austria, as Adolf Wohlbrück. He was the son of Gisela Rosa (Cohn) and Adolf Ferdinand Bernhard Hermann Wohlbrück. He was descended from ten generations of actors, though his father broke with tradition and was a circus clown. Walbrook studied with the director Max Reinhardt and built up a career in Austrian theatre and cinema.
In 1936, he went to Hollywood to reshoot dialogue for the multinational The Soldier and the Lady (1937) and in the process changed his name from Adolf to Anton. Instead of returning to Austria, Walbrook, who was gay and classified under the Nuremberg Laws as "half-Jewish" (his mother was Jewish), settled in England and continued working as a film actor, making a speciality of playing continental Europeans.
Producer-director Herbert Wilcox cast him as Prince Albert in Victoria the Great (1937) and Walbrook also appeared in the sequel, Sixty Glorious Years the following year. He was in director Thorold Dickinson's version of Gaslight (1940), in the role played by Charles Boyer in the later Hollywood remake. In Dangerous Moonlight (1941), a romantic melodrama, he was a Polish pianist torn over whether to return home. For the Powell and Pressburger team in The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) he played the role of the dashing, intense "good German" officer Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff, and the tyrannical impresario Lermontov in The Red Shoes (1948). One of his most unusual films, reuniting him with Dickinson, is The Queen of Spades (1949), a Gothic thriller based on the Alexander Pushkin short story, in which he co-starred with Edith Evans. For Max Ophüls he was the ringmaster in La Ronde (1950).

Olivier plays a Russian officer (Ignatoff) who is recuperating in a military hospital, where he is looked after by a nurse, Natasha (Dudley-Ward). She is already engaged to Brioukow, a rich merchant of peasant stock, played by Harry Baur. This is a sentimental wartime drama with an interwoven minor spy plot. Its main interest lies in Olivier’s performance .He was to repeat a Russian role but now with heavy Russian accent in “The Demi-Paradise” (1943), also made by Asquith. Harry Baur was a great French actor who starred in many films by some of the most famous directors before World War II. He was tortured to death by the Gestapo in 1943. He was most excellent in “Poil de carotte” (1932), Julien Duvivier’s masterpiece. In this film, however, he is prone to a certain overacting and he is not helped by having been dressed up to look like Rasputin, although he is not really villainous in this role. Film buffs will be interested to note that there is an uncredited short appearance by Anthony Quayle in his debut on the silver screen.

Harry Baur was a great French actor who starred in many films by some of the most famous directors before World War II. He was tortured to death by the Gestapo in 1943. He was most excellent in “Poil de carotte” (1932), Julien Duvivier’s masterpiece. In this film, however, he is prone to a certain overacting and he is not helped by having been dressed up to look like Rasputin, although he is not really villainous in this role. Film buffs will be interested to note that there is an uncredited short appearance by Anthony Quayle in his debut on the silver screen.

“Moscow Nights” aka “I Stand Condemned” (1935) Directed by Anthony Asquith. With Laurence Olivier, Penelope Dudley-Ward, Harry Baur. This early Asquith film is set in Imperial Russia during World War I. Olivier plays a Russian officer (Ignatoff) who is recuperating in a military hospital, where he is looked after by a nurse, Natasha (Dudley-Ward). She is already engaged to Brioukow, a rich merchant of peasant stock, played by Harry Baur. This is a sentimental wartime drama with an interwoven minor spy plot. Its main interest lies in Olivier’s performance .He was to repeat a Russian role but now with heavy Russian accent in “The Demi-Paradise” (1943), also made by Asquith. This film is another version of Vera Caspary's novel "Laura", first filmed by Otto Preminger in 1944.There is another odd TV version of this book already available on this channel. I don't have the copyright of this film and must assume it has expired or could be shown according to Berne convention. Film buffs will be interested to note that there is an uncredited short appearance by Anthony Quayle in his debut on the silver screen.
