Senior airman (SrA) is the fourth enlisted rank in the United States Air Force, just above airman first class and below staff sergeant. It has a pay grade of E-4. Between its approval on 30 December 1975 (with implementation 1 June 1976) and 19 March 1991, senior airmen wore sleeve chevrons with blue center stars instead of silver to distinguish them from the non-commissioned officer rank of "sergeant", also a pay grade of E-4. The latter was abolished in 1991 and the blue center star was changed to white to conform to all enlisted rank chevrons.
The Air Force promotes an airman first class (A1C) to senior airman after 36 months time in service (TIS) and 20 months time in grade (TIG), or 28 months TIG, whichever occurs first. Outstanding airmen first class, limited to no more than 15 percent of the total, may be promoted to senior airmen six months early, in a competitive process called Below-the-Zone, which normally involves going before a competitive board. Senior airmen are expected to be technically proficient and begin to develop leadership skills, and may be expected to supervise an airman of lesser rank.
An air force, also known in some countries as an air army, is in the broadest sense, the national military organization that primarily conducts aerial warfare. More specifically, it is the branch of a nation's armed services that is responsible for aerial warfare as distinct from an army, navy, or a marine corps. Typically, air forces are responsible for gaining control of the air, carrying out strategic and tactical bombing missions, and providing support to land and naval forces.
The term "air force" may also refer to a tactical air force or numbered air force, which is an operational formation either within a national air force or comprising several air components from allied nations. Air forces typically consist of a combination of fighters, bombers, helicopters, transport planes and other aircraft.
Many air forces are also responsible for operations of the military space, intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), and communications equipment. Some air forces may command and control other air defence assets such as anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, or anti-ballistic missile warning networks and defensive systems. Some nations, principally Russia, the former Soviet Union and countries who modelled their militaries along Soviet lines, have an air defence force which is organizationally separate from their air force.
Staff Sergeant is a rank of non-commissioned officer used in the armed forces of several countries. It is also a police rank in some police services.
In origin certain senior sergeants were assigned to administrative, supervisory, or other specialist duties as part of the staff of a British army regiment. As such they held seniority over sergeants who were members of a battalion or company, and were paid correspondingly increased wages. Their seniority was indicated by a crown worn above the three sergeants' stripes on their uniform rank markings.
In the Australian Army and Cadets, the rank of staff sergeant is being phased out. It was usually held by the company quartermaster sergeant or the holders of other administrative roles. Staff sergeants are always addressed as "Staff Sergeant" or "Staff", never as "Sergeant" as it degrades their rank. "Chief" is another nickname though this is only used for the company chief clerk (in some instances the chief clerk role can be filled by another non-commissioned rank (but not warrant officer) and still be referred to as "Chief"). A staff sergeant ranks above sergeant and below warrant officer class 2.

On August 24, 2016 I found out that I made Staff Sergeant on my first time testing. In the Air Force E-5 is the first rank that you have to test for and actually earn. US Air Force Staff Sergeant testing takes place every year during the early summer. Results come out in August and they promote a percentage of Senior Airman every year. This year they promoted 42% of Senior Airman to Staff Sergeant. Now to my knowledge, Every SrA that is test eligible has to go and take the test for SSgt. Not everyone actually tries on their test however. I did however and I filled out my test sheet to the best of my knowledge. The test for Staff Sergeant is over the PDG (Professional Development Guide) and your career fields CDC's (Career Development Course) They compile your score of those two tests then ...

Senior Airman Anthony Morris, an air traffic controller at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, talks about his upbringing in a small town in Alabama, playing basketball for the All-Air Force Team and Team USA and his career in the United States Air Force. "First Faces" began several years ago with chaplains from throughout AETC nominating Airmen from individual wings. Today, the program has expanded and includes a partnership between the chaplain's and public affairs offices, in order to reach a wider audience. Each Airman's story is a powerful way to infuse hope and build resilience. Airpower Starts Here!
Congratulations to Senior Airman Christopher Balderas, 375th Security Forces Squadron, who was STEP promoted to Staff Sergeant Jan. 8 during the 375th AMW's 4th Quarter Award ceremony. He's an amazing Airman who outperforms in every way and encompasses excellence in everything he does! He's already been leading the way, so it's great to be able to give him the rank that is well-earned!
