Rethink Required to Boost Nutritional Value and Sustainability of Zambia’s Food System

Zambia needs to rethink its food and agriculture system in order to improve diversity in both food production and consumption, according to the new report “Sustainable Diets for All: Agriculture, food systems, diets and nutrition in Zambia”. The report finds that every US dollar of investment in proven nutrition interventions could potentially generate around USD18 in economic returns from improved health and productivity of the population.

Diversified Diets a Must for Zambia

There is a need to promote the consumption of a variety of foods in Zambia, according to Frank Mechielsen, Hivos’ Senior Sustainable Diets for All Programme Manager. In Zambia, many people cannot access healthy and diverse foods. To complicate matters, the Zambian government has traditionally concentrated on promoting the cultivation of maize at the expense of other crops.

Leveraging on its long history of supporting the arts sector in Zimbabwe, the Hivos Southern Africa exhibition stand featured a potpourri of artistic activities including music performances, spoken word and comedy among others.

Cervical cancer is a cancer that arise from the cervix. It is due to an abnormal growth of cells that have the ability to invade or spread to other parts of the body (the cervix is the lower, narrow part of the uterus or the womb). Almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) which can be passed on through any type of sexual contact.
