Centuries-old idols seized in Munger

MUNGER: Three-century-old antiques, including idols of Lord Mahavira, Lord Buddha and Lord Shiva with Goddess Parvati, were seized by the Munger police from the house of one Ghantoo Mahton in Sitakund Dih village under the Muffasil police station area on Saturday.
According to Munger SP Ashish Bharti, an interstate gang involved in the smuggling of antiques has been busted with the arrest of Ghantoo Mahto. The three precious antiques seized by police are all made of solid black stones, the SP said.
Ghantoo, a resident of village Urain under Kajra police station area in Lakhisarai district, led the gang of the smugglers, the SP said and added he told interrogators that each antique would fetch anything between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 50 lakh in other states where foreign agents were active to buy them.
Ghantoo used to sell these antiques in Karnataka and Delhi.
The SP said the director of the state archaeological department had been informed about the seizures and requested to visit Munger for examining the antiques.
Police said Mantoo Yadav and Tikroo Chaudhary of Lakhisarai district managed to escape before police raided their premises.
