The East River is a salt water tidal strait in New York City. The waterway, which is actually not a river despite its name, connects Upper New York Bay on its south end to Long Island Sound on its north end. It separates Long Island – including the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn – from the Bronx on the North American mainland, and the island of Manhattan. Because of its connection to Long Island Sound, it was once also known as the Sound River. The tidal strait changes its flow direction frequently.
The strait was formed approximately 11,000 years ago at the end of the Wisconsin glaciation. The distinct change in the shape of the strait between the lower and upper portions is evidence of this glacial activity. The upper portion (from Long Island Sound to Hell Gate), running largely perpendicular to the glacial motion, is wide, meandering, and has deep narrow bays on both banks, scoured out by the glacier's movement. The lower portion (from Hell Gate to New York Bay) runs north-south, parallel to the glacial motion. It is much narrower, with straight banks. The bays that exist (or existed before being filled in by human activity), are largely wide and shallow.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Hell Gate is a narrow tidal strait in the East River in New York City in the US. It separates Astoria, Queens from Randall's and Wards Islands (formerly two separate islands, now joined by landfill).
The name "Hell Gate" is a corruption of the Dutch phrase Hellegat, which could mean either "bright strait" or "clear opening", and it was originally applied to the entirety of the East River. Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, the first European known to have navigated the strait, described it in his journals during his 1614 voyage aboard the Onrust. Hellegat is a fairly common toponym for waterways in the Low Countries, with at least 20 separate examples. Because explorers found navigation hazardous in this New World place of rocks and converging tide-driven currents (from the Long Island Sound, Harlem River strait, Upper Bay of New York Harbor, and lesser channels, some of which have been filled), the Anglicization stuck.
New York—often called New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part—is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York metropolitan area, the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States and one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. A global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. Home to the headquarters of the United Nations, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world.
Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of New York State. The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a census-estimated 2014 population of 8,491,079 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. By 2014 census estimates, the New York City metropolitan region remains by a significant margin the most populous in the United States, as defined by both the Metropolitan Statistical Area (20.1 million residents) and the Combined Statistical Area (23.6 million residents). In 2013, the MSA produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of nearly US$1.39 trillion, while in 2012, the CSA generated a GMP of over US$1.55 trillion, both ranking first nationally by a wide margin and behind the GDP of only twelve and eleven countries, respectively.
York City Football Club is a professional association football club based in the city of York, North Yorkshire, England. The team compete in League Two, the fourth tier of league football in England, as of the 2015–16 season.
First founded in 1908, the club played seven seasons in non-League football before folding in 1917. A new club was formed in 1922, and played in the Midland League for seven years before joining the Football League. They played in the third tier until 1959, when they were promoted for the first time. York achieved their best run in the FA Cup in 1954–55, when they met Newcastle United in the semi-final. They fluctuated between the Third and Fourth Divisions, before spending two seasons in the Second Division in the 1970s. York first played at Wembley Stadium in 1993, when they won the Third Division play-off final. At the end of 2003–04 they lost their Football League status after being relegated from the Third Division. The 2011–12 FA Trophy was the first national knockout competition won by York, and they returned into the Football League that season.

East River Fishing - Big Bluefish 10/9/15
Hundreds of ships had sunk in this treacherous tidal strait on the East River separating Astoria, Queens from the area from Randall's Island and Wards Island - a section of land made up of two separate islands that are how joined by a landfill. Many New Yorkers refer to Hell Gate as Hell's Gate and believed it was so named because of the extremely choppy water that results from the collision of the tide coming in the and flow going out on the East River and the Harlem River. Actually though, the name "Hell Gate" is a corruption of the Dutch phrase Hellegat, which could mean either "hell's hole" or "bright gate/passage", The name was originally applied to the entirety of the East River. I spend the day exploring the city's different boroughs by the water. The East River Ferry allows New Yorkers AND tourists alike to see a range of interesting areas all on one ticket. PLUS you get to travel in style! Can you believe I could go shopping in Williamsburg, marvel at street art Greenpoint, devour an ice cream under the Brooklyn Bridge in Dumbo, all in a few hours! It was fun the moment the East River Ferry set sail--and I got a tan on the way! :)

East River Plaza is located at 116th St. next to the FDR Expressway which sits along the East River on the East Side of Manhattan. So it's easily accessible (depending on traffic volume) from just about anywhere in New York City's boroughs. There's plenty of parking and there's also an inexpensive car service you can hire if you don't have your own vehicle. The First Avenue and Second...

Your Washington, D.C. tour should start at the National Mall, where you’ll find monuments, memorials, and government buildings instead of tons of shopping. Check out the Watergate Hotel and Kennedy Center when you stop at Foggy Bottom, then move on to Georgetown, the oldest district in D.C. It’s filled with 18th-century buildings and, of course, the university itself. After a stop at the National Cathedral, make your way to the Smithsonian National Zoo,...
This is video I shot during visits to various areas along the East River in New York during the summer of 2013. I hope you enjoy. The opening shot is a view from the Roosevelt Island Tram, which connects the East Side of Manhattan to Roosevelt Island. It's a great ride if you're not afraid of heights. In this video, you also see some shots of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan Bridge, The 59th St (Queensboro) Bridge, and the RFK Bridge (formerly the Triborough). There are several shots of the "Hell Gate" area of the Upper East Side, where the incoming tide from the Atlantic collides with the downstream flow of the river. It makes for quite a bumpy ride, as you can tell by watching boats plowing their way through. Check out "Know Before You Go To New York: Travel Tips From A Licensed Ne...

The East River Esplanade on the Upper East Side and in East Harlem stretches from 60th to 125th Street. It features a panoramic vista of the East River, Roosevelt Island and the Robert F. Kennedy (formerly the Triboro) and Hell Gate Bridges. Even though it sits right next to the FDR highway, it's a pleasant place to spend time to pause and reflect or even do some fishing. The East River Esplanade is a favorite among those who live on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for walking, jogging, and bicycling. The East River Esplanade is a public open space has the promise of a vibrant gathering point for residents and visitors alike. This is some quick video I shot while on the Circle Line cruise around Manhattan Island. The park is dedicated to the 4 Freedons speech done by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1941. It sits on Roosevelt Island, in the East River next to Manhattan Island. The 59th Street bridge is nearby, connecting Roosevelt Island with Manhattan. You can ride a tram to get from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island, and then walk south to get to 4 Freedoms Park. I shot this video of the Manhattan Psychiatric Center while I was a passenger on the Circle Line cruise ship in June 2014. It's located at on 125th Street on Wards Island in New York City. As of 2009, it was licensed for 509 beds, but held only around 200 patients. The current building is 17-stories tall. The hospital's roots date to 1848 when Wards Island was designated the reception area for immigrants. I also recognized it because I had recently seen the movie "Side Effects," in which it appeared. The movie featured Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Rooney Mara. This video was shot when I walked from the Manhattan end of the Brooklyn Bridge to the Brooklyn side. The video shows the pedestrian "boardwalk" and vehicle traffic. A walk across the bridge covers a little more than a mile in distance. I stopped along the way to shoot some of the sights: the skyline along Lower Manhattan, scenes up and down the shores of the East River and the area beaneath the bridge on the Brooklyn side. There are also some distant shots of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The video finishes with a segment shot during the start of a trip on the East River Ferry heading north under the bridge.
