Amma Asante (born 13 September 1969) is a British screenwriter, film director, and former actress. She wrote and directed A Way of Life (2004), which won numerous awards. Her second feature film as a director was Belle in 2013.
Asante was born in London in 1969, to Ghanaian immigrant parents; her father was an accountant, and her mother ran the family-owned African deli. As a child, Asante attended the Barbara Speake stage school in Acton, London, where she trained as a pupil in dance and drama. She began her film and television career as a child actress, appearing as a regular in the British school drama Grange Hill. She appeared in the "Just Say No" campaign of the 1980s and was one of nine Grange Hill children to take it to the Reagan White House. She gained credits in other British television series, including Desmond's (Channel 4) and Birds of a Feather (BBC1), and was a Children's Channel presenter for a year.
In her late teens, Asante left acting and worked in screenwriting with a development deal from Chrysalis. She founded a production company, Tantrum Films, and wrote and produced two series of the urban drama Brothers and Sisters, for BBC2.
A United Kingdom is an upcoming British period biopic directed by Amma Asante and starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike. The film is based on the true-life romance between Seretse Khama and his wife Ruth Williams Khama.
Pike joined the cast in May 2015 with Asante joining shortly after.
In September 2015 Asante revealed that shooting would be split between Botswana and London and that the film would begin shooting in October in preparation for a 2016 release to coincide with the 50th anniversary of independence in Botswana.
In October 2015 actors Jack Davenport and Tom Felton (who had previously worked with Asante on Belle) joined the cast.
In November 2015 some filming took place around Hyde Park/Kensington Gardens including Imperial College Union.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in the European Union. Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, it includes the island of "Great Britain" (a term also applied loosely to refer to the whole country), the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands.Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-southwest. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), the UK is the 80th-largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th-largest in Europe. It is also is the 21st-most populous country, with an estimated 64.5 million inhabitants.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its capital city is London, an important global city and financial centre with an urban population of 10,310,000, the fourth-largest in Europe and second-largest in the European Union. The current monarch—since 6 February 1952—is Queen Elizabeth II. The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The latter three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, respectively. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the United Kingdom, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Amma Asante is the director of the Hollywood hit movie Belle and found that working in Hollywood where only 0.4% of directors are black females, she has been under pressure to live up to a definition bestowed upon her; one that did not match own own self definition. A passionate speaker, Amma asks us to consider that we are all a combination of many worlds put together and when those worlds meet, progress can follow. BAFTA award winning writer-director Amma Asante began her career as a child actress, appearing as a regular in the popular British school drama Grange Hill. She found her Belle in Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who you may not recognize from Undercovers, Touch, or Larry Crowne right off the bat. They talked to David Poland about the process, the film that emerged, and their lives in the film business.
